In the current v2.1.1, I could not find fLevelFactor. I assume the bug was fixed, but are there changes to be made otherwise?

Nope, defaults should all be good now! Configure for uncap, that's it.

Hey Tejon, been a fan of your mods for awhile but I seem to be having an issue currently... not sure what is causing it. I use nGCD, Progress, SkillDecay, and The Versatile Adventurer together (awesome combo). My progress bar for a few skills (Speechcraft, Alteration, and Persuasion to be exact) is full and is showing they are hundreds of thousands to millions of percent to the next skill up and when I perform an action that increases that skill, it instantly increases with no change in the percentage. I've turned off all your mods but the issue still stays. I'm not sure what to do about it. Is there a mod in my load order that would cause that? Here it is...

Peste reported what sounds like same thing, over in the nGCD thread. Does http://img.ihack.se/images/1312940146103.jpg look like what you're seeing? If so, my hunch is that it's only a display glitch: Skill Decay is confusing your UI mod's percentage calculations when it reduces a skill. This is not yet verified, but I asked Peste to let me know if the behavior matched the hypothesis and he hasn't come back with new info so that's where it stands.

So, same to you -- make sure you've got the latest versions of Skill Decay, then let me know if anything seems wrong other than the percentage display. To be clear, the assumption here is that the bar really is full (because it just decayed from the rank above), and you really should gain a rank on the next use. After that, you should be at the next skill rank with an empty bar. If the bar's still showing full, it might be more display issues -- see what happens when you use the skill again. Two immediate skill gains in a row is a real problem, so hopefully that's not what happens. :)

So far I've only tested the Persuasion skill... but I'm using Persuasion Overhaul. Every time I use one of the Persuasion options I gain a skill up several in a row. This could be due to how Persuasion Overhaul works however. Let me check my other skills and report back.

EDIT: Just tried the Alteration skill. Casting multiple times in a row gave me continual increases. I may have screwed it up when I removed the mod and reinstalled it (as my progress didn't change even afterward). I'll load an earlier save and see.

EDIT2: Guess I will try a new game and see if I run into the same issue again. I'll keep you posted.

EDIT: Just tried the Alteration skill. Casting multiple times in a row gave me continual increases. I may have screwed it up when I removed the mod and reinstalled it (as my progress didn't change even afterward). I'll load an earlier save and see.

Huh. That points to something going wrong with the base calculation of required skill experience. Have you verified that all the .ini files for your various Progress modules are in place?

Yep. All of them are there. I haven't done any more testing with it yet, but if I come up with any ideas I'll let you know what I figured out.

I love how much more intuitive and immersive gameplay is with your mods. I'm a particular fan of Fizzle, Lock Bash, and Willful Resistance. Things like this polish a vanilla-esque game nicely, so it all starts to fit and flow better. Thank you!

I have only one character that I play for any consequential amount of time, but she's got nearly 400 hours of playtime now. I'm wanting to start a new game. I will be picking up nGCD and Progress for that game, so thank you in advance for those, too. :happy:

After starting a new character and running into the same bug, I seem to have narrowed down what is causing it. If I load a non-bugged save up and then start moving as soon as possible, my athletics goes up (and up and up). I'm assuming it has something to do with not letting the scripts initialize. This is 100% reproducible on my end. I thought it might have something to do with an uncapper, but it happens when using Elys', Roush, or none at all. Here is my updated load order, but there isn't anything in it that should cause it AFAIK...

EDIT: Nevermind Tejon. Just discovered that my issue was caused by having the JCN_AV Uncap.esp activated while not having the AV Uncapper.dll in the OBSE plugins folder. I'm not having issues since I've installed the dll. Sorry for the trouble, but at least you know what causes it and there aren't any issues with your mod :P.

Having a bit of trouble playing with Progress 2.2 and Realistic Levelling. I'll quote myself from the other thread where I asked Pseron Wyrd and he directed me here

Some of those plugin features in progress sound terrific (partial experience for misses; magicka cost modified xp; etc.). However, I installed it and it seemed to take over on the whole levelling process, meaning, it turned off at least some of the features of Realistic Leveling, though I'm not sure which ones in total.

Namely, in default RL, you can train as up to 100 times per level (which effectively = as many as you want). This was set back to 10 per level. I suspect that basically Progress was taking over from RL. There are other aspects of RL that I don't want to lose.

Not sure it would be possible to only get the individual plugins in Progress 2.2 to work but with RL levelling maths as the core?

Hello, regarding TRAP - I have installed it right after I've started the game - while I was somewhere in the sewers. I checked my attributes, but as a Breton, I still had 50/50 Int/Will. Why does it not work?

Ha! That'll do it. I've spent hours troubleshooting similar mistakes... good to know the mystery is solved!

The Progress readme, and I think also the RL one, directly addresses that issue. The only problem is that Progress uses a script to assert its values after game load, specifically so it can guarantee that its settings are the ones actually used. So just change its settings! Number of training sessions per level is an option in Progress.ini. Set it to 100 to match RL.

ADDIT: I haven't tried NGCD, and obviously trying to get it to run 'with' Realistic Leveling would be silly since they are redundant with one another. I'd be curious to know if you are familiar with Realistic Leveling and if you could summarize or point me to a summary of how those two mods compare? The mods are similar in core design, but different in the details... unfortunately I really can't say anything more specific than that. :) Definitely best to just try it and make your own comparison, if you're interested.

In general, any mod to race or class loaded after game start will not change your base attributes. Use the ShowRaceMenu console command to switch to a different race, then back again -- you should see the changes. Or just use the option at the sewer gate.

@Anthropoid: Realist Leveling is based on http://www.oblivionmodwiki.com/index.php/Kobu%27s_Character_Advancement_System's great wheel. It is not very configurable, but it's not supposed to be. The purposes of the RL and nGCD are pretty different, even though they are both smooth leveling mods.

Well... I've been holding off an announcement on this. The short answer is yes, still working on it; and no, no ETA.

The long answer is, I'm finding it hard to avoid the conclusion that the scope of changes I want to make is impossible to achieve without introducing so many incompatibilities with other mods that I might as well just call it a full-fledged overhaul, and tackle level scaling too. I don't want to officially announce a mod of that scope right now, because even in my own estimation it's got a 50% chance of being vaporware. However, I'm resolved to give it a shot; I'm actively working with JRoush and DragoonWraith to establish some tools that will make the overall task less daunting, and I'm slowly gathering potential source material (and maybe helping hands) for areas of the game I'm currently less familiar with. So... it's very likely that Ars will never see release in its own right. But if this project pans out, it will be one of the cornerstones.

I'm happy to see you've updated some of the "classics"! So good work all around!

TFE's next, by the way. Actually, TFE Needs is next, broken out on its own. The other fatigue stuff probably soon after, unless the upcoming Realistic Fatigue update turns out to cover everything I can think of, which it may. (I need to read ABO's research notes. Could be that all my core disagreements are unfounded.)

Hey, I have a question: do drain skill spells supposed to change how much XP I need to raise a skill? Example with CLS-SneakyFeet mod, plus nGCD and Progress:

Mercantile and speechcraft without any penalties, respectfully:
45%; 10
99%; 16

With drain skill penalties (5 for both skills):
129%; 5
173%; 11

This leads to me getting a skill raise to 6 and 12 after only one skill use, and then to 11 and 17 when penalties wear off, so it feels kinda like cheating :)

SneakyFeet must be using ability effects ("permanent" spells, like birthsigns) to adjust your skills. These affect the base value, so that the game acts as if you really do have that lower skill.

A similar effect can be seen in a completely vanilla game, with the Skeleton Key; if you pick it up and pick locks until you're just about to gain a skill rank, then drop it, you'll have enough experience to gain a rank 40 points higher... which might gain you two or three in a row now that your skill is back to normal.

There are ways around this, but unfortunately you'd pretty much have to rewrite the entire mod.

Considering Ars Gratia Artaeum is a long ways off, is MagLite still recommended? I noticed you took it off TesNexus, but I still have a copy of it. Basically I'm asking if you know of any outstanding bugs or issues.

I want a low-profile overhaul for the magic system and the others seem a bit overwhelming.

I hid it specifically because of rampant outstanding bugs and issues. ;) Admittedly there are a few things I could salvage and release independently... the adjustments to starting spells, fix scripts for Feather and Fortify effects, and changes to ingredient effect visibility spring to mind. If there's anything else you particularly liked, make a list, I'll unhide it on Nexus and put up the "good parts" version.

But in the long run, a few minor tweaks aside, I came to the conclusion that the others were right... there's just no such thing as a low-profile magic overhaul: too much is broken, and fixing it all starts bleeding side-effects into the rest of the game. :shakehead:

Thanks for getting back to me.

I don't rightly know which bits are easier to implement than others or where the bugs stem from, but I'll list several things, in no particular order. If any of them is more trouble that it's worth, just let me know :)

The Alchemy bit sounded good in its whole.
Fortify and Feather you already mentioned. Frenzy was good too.
The spell costs based on the school of magic.
Projectile speed - I've got Wrye Bash handling this, but yours was different for every type.
Changes to costs - I don't think these caused bugs, but there's the chameleon issue and there's the issue of passive spells like Shield that are usually too short.
The Bound Weapons would be nice, but I don't particularly use Conjuration so I'm not really bothered.
Changes to enchanting were nice, again. You could probably drop any changes in gold cost as EE can handle those. Rebalancing the Soul Gems/Sigil Stones and how far you can enchant an item would be keepers too imho.
Out of the premade spells and staves - this is probably where most bugs come from. Generally I agree to the changes though, so if you can keep 'em, keep 'em.

Now, that's most of your mod. What can I say? You told me to make a list of what I liked.
If I'm to be really strict, I think the one fact that bothers me the most is the effective duration/magnitude values of the spells - chameleon, shield, feather, and so on. That's the top thing I would like to see addressed.

I wouldn't want to take too much of your time, particularly because I'm really looking forwards to the "needs" TFE now.

  • "Rouging It" is included, with some technological improvements. No more eating an extra spot in your load list, plus full integration means that sleeping without a bed can be less restful than sleeping in one, which I recall people asking for. Can be disabled if you've got a bedroll mod and want to keep your spell list clean.
  • Fatigue can't be damaged below zero. (Actually not below 1 by default, to prevent falling if you use a mod that causes it.) However, if you're out of fatigue, penalties can now spill over into magicka and eventually health. Options exist to affect magicka and health directly rather than by spill-over.
  • Eating food should now be 100% detected and applied instantaneously, even while you're still in the menu. Hooray for OBSE event handlers!
  • Food value calculation is a bit more complex, and the defaults should provide better overall scaling from blackberry through pumpkin.
  • Vampire handling now checks your level of vampirism. By default it still just turns off all needs if you're a vampire, but you can configure food and sleep requirements to go away at different vampirism levels.
  • A few useful script variables are listed at the bottom of BareNecessities.ini for easy configuration of HUD Status Bars.

Your mods make my Oblivion worth playing. I also discovered a recent mod that successfully adds Birthsigns to NPCs, which, when combined with Birthsigns Expanded, makes EVERY battle with bandits and what-not very exciting and challenging. Keep up the good work! I'll get started play testing your new mod. =)
