Telepaths, and what magic school it would be.

Post » Thu Sep 13, 2012 10:07 am

So yeah I started Morrowind again, and I'm doing the class questions. The old guy mentions Telepaths, and I'm like

"Are their really telepaths in the Elderscrolls, or was it just a hypothetical question?".

If there are I can't help but wonder what magic school would it be in.

I think it was also a question in Daggerfall character creation.

I suppose it would fit mysticism, thoughts are drawn from the mind directly via dream-sleeve or nocturnal resonance.

Mysticism is my best guess. Remember though, the schools of magic are organized with some logic, but they are still an artificial categorization/separation.

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Dagailwas a master in mysticism, but I'm not sure if the voices she heard had anything to do with telepathy.

I thought mystisicm at first as well. But since mysticism has been combined with Alteration, and Conjuration I didn't think that would fly.

I don't think it is "combining". In Skyrim the whole School of Mysticism is removed, perhaps due to the disappearance of the Psijics, so some certain spells gain their alteration or conjuration counterparts in order to appear, maybe a result from the advancement of magic research, that the principle of some certain spells has become clear enough that people can cast them in the way of alteration or conjuration, and no longer need the disciplines from the Psijics.

Telepathy does exist, as shown in The Doors of Oblivion. Of course, there is still the question of whether you can read the mind of any old guy walking into court.

The http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Psijic_Order and http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Dwemer can (in the Dwemer's case, perhaps I should say, could) connect with the minds of others, and converse miles apart - a skill that is sometimes called telepathy. Over the course of my employment, Zenas and I developed such a link between one another. It was accidental, a result of two powerful Conjurers working closely together, but we decided that it would be invaluable should he succeed in traveling to Oblivion. Since the denizens of that land could be touched even by the skills of an amateur Conjurer, it was possible we could continue to communicate while he was there, so I could record his discoveries.
Note the similarity to Jedi Force Bonds.

The magical school which has to do the most with reaching out with your mind and connecting to another consciousness is Conjuration, and it is noted that master conjurers (and Dwemer) can speak to one-another with their mental connection from great distances.

Except that the Dwemer did this via radio.
As is evidenced from the game Morrowind where one could find an abundance of 'Dwemer Coherers'.
A http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coherer is a device solely used in radio technology.

Well yeah, perhaps, but, why?

If you have soul-gem powered radio compared to your own innate magic prowess driven telepathy..
It would be like lighting a fire with a tinderbox when you have a zippo.
Magic takes time and skill to master. Flicking a switch does not.

I suppose it is possible, but I would say the easier option was prevalent where the magical one could maybe have been a childrens game, a way to have absolute privacy or other exotic reasons.

The Dwemer used mechanical birds to Skype back and forth.

There were those lines from the Keyes novels. Summoning a daedra is like having a mental tug-of-war. Or so i paraphrase. The conjurer sometimes gets overwhelmed with the daedra's own aggression; I forget if the aggression exhibits itself in the mage, but by that point, the uncontrolled daedra probably ripped the wizard apart :>
