So...tell a non-player whats so AWESOME about TES

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 3:30 am

I have never played any games in the TES series. If they make TESV I might give it a try. I've played FO3 and really liked its style, which seems to be derived from the same kind of mechanics as Oblivion.

Please tell me here what you LOVE of TES. Anything you want, any aspect.

But don't be negative or complain. This is also not about anything you WOULD love to see, so no speculating.

Just praises.

Freedom - total freedom within the world-spaces to do what YOU want. No forced quests (well, other than the starting dungeon). Open environments that let you go where you want.

Personally, I'm an explorer - I love worlds that let me go poking around, just to see what's out there. TES are wonderful for that.

For those who are into it, a rich lore background, where not everything is spelled out for you, and there's even contradictory information.

For the recent PC titles (Morrowind and Oblivion) the mod tools, which have allowed some talented people to extend the game way past what it was like out-of-the-box.

Nothing else I've found has come close, and I've been playing them since Area originally came out.

Don't be so picky man. Just rent it, try, buy it if you like it.

I'd suggest starting with Morrowind, then moving on to Oblivion, then doing Daggerfall. Daggerfall and Arena are availabl for free on the bethesda home page, just to let you know.

Anyway, they're all great games. Daggerfall is my personal favourite, followed by Morrowind, but I'm sure you'll enjoy all of them.

And with both Morrowind and Oblivion, you can find them pretty easily on the cheap.

Arena and Daggerfall are both available for free download from this sight and Morrowind is around 10 dollars at Walmart (just the original with no expansions) or 20 for game + expansions. You can also find it on Steam for around 10 dollars as well (if I recall correctly).

Free or cheap. Get one and try it out!

Freedom, endless opportunities. It may seem too much at first, but here's what TES does: it draws you in. You will find your place. The atmosphere of especially Morrowind is so amazing. There are more games out there with tons of stuff to do and choices to make, but these get boring because you don't have much reason to do something. The atmosphere of TES games is such that it creates a world you feel part of, want to be in, and it remains interesting.

And the mods... so many amazing things, you can customize the game in so many ways. If there is a small thing that annoys you, you can fix it most of the time without much effort.

The lore, books, depth of the story... is amazing. You can play the game, only read the dialogue presented to you, and finish it. Play it again, start doing research, and a whole new world opens to you. Conflicting accounts of events, metaphysics, religion, so many things are interesting and multi-layered. If you like depth, it is simply amazingly interesting to put some research into this. I spent many hours in game just hanging around in my character's house, reading the books I had collected.

There's just too many things to list here.

This is the kind of information I'm looking for. Why do you LOVE TES....not some much, you should go buy the game and find out. I will likely check these games out. I often pick up games to sit on for a while (like the Metal Gear Solid series) then come back once I have the time to play them.

So if you just found this topic or are coming back; in nitty gritty detail ..... WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THE TES SERIES?

I didn't like arena because I couldn't get passed the old englishness of it. It was too nerdy for me (no offense.)
Daggerfall is amazing if you can get past the graphics. remember, ALWAYS GO TO THE LEFT!
Morrowind was, IMO, the best. varied land types, etc.
Oblivion was too much like an FPS for an RPG.

I like TES for the skill system.

Many other RPGs use XP-based level advancement: kill monsters to get XP to level up. Gain X amount of points to increase your attributes, and Y amount of points to allocate to your skills.

But in TES, you increase your skills by using your skills. It's like your skills get XP and they get to level up.

I also like the Fatigue bar, it adds a nice element to game play and to realism. Swinging your weapon takes energy, as does running and jumping and being punched in the face. So, you can't just stand there and swing your ginormous battle axe at enemies and constantly have an equal chance of hitting. No, instead, the more tired you get, the less likely you are to succeed at hitting enemies or performing skills (spell casting, sneaking, speechcraft, and so on).

I love TESIII for its exotic location and unique, original culture and architecture. It blends the familiar with plenty of exotic to produce something original, creative, and fun to explore.

Well a great thing about Morrowind and Oblivion is that, like Fallout 3, they have Construction Sets so you can mod and download mods. Just don't buy Morrowind from Steam as it doesn't come with the CS.

I've never liked a TES game as much as I like Fallout 3, however they're still great. I love the fact that TES has such unique open worlds, full of life and interesting locations. The stories are great, and the leveling system is really great as well. But to really get why the series is awesome, you have to play it yourself. Morrowind is cheap on Amazon, around $15-$20, and Oblivion isn't that much more expensive.

Absolute freedom- I have probably put in a good 100+ hours on things completely unrelated to quests.

Very diverse methods of play- If i feel like a challenge, all I have to do is turn up the difficulty.
When i just wanna run around killing trolls with a rusty iron bow and arrows, I'll turn it down.

The ability of hours upon hours of quests. Sword play , magic , archery . Great lore and enemies. Only if Gstaff could get Todd Howard to sum it up.

Both Morrowind and Oblivion is excellent games, and even better, their expansions makes it even more awsome.

But best of all.....mods! :woot:

 Good shots man, and the perfect way to describe Oblivion IMHO. You really should have included some shots of Morrowind though, especially a Modded Morrowind. :D

Its all about the loot. Rarely in a game when you steal a helmet from a corpse does the helmet, and the helmet only, remove itself from the body.

Well you can look through http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=986855 thread for Morrowind pictures, but keep in mind most of those pictures are taken of modded games.

Edit: And yes those were from Oblivion.

Aye they're from Oblivion, modded for the visuals.

I played Morrowind on the Xbox, and although I bought it for the pc a couple of years ago to play it with mods... I've never been able to give it the time it deserves. Mainly because I invested so many hundreds of hours into my Xbox save game that starting back from square one is a little depressing. I've never been able to get much enjoyment out of starting a new character every other week like some TES fans. I tend to get attached to a character and associate the game with him/her just as much as the world itself.

Although with the Morrowind Graphics Extender mod it might be worth exploring the world again, if only for the chance to take screenshots.
