Telling friend from foe?

Post » Wed Sep 21, 2011 8:09 am

I've had this problem since oblivion where I'd just see a group of people and not know if they're friend or foe... Surely the whole of skyrim's forests aren't filled with only bandits and nasty stuff? And shooting an arrow into somone's face just because he looks like a bandit is just silly!

Any opinions, suggestions, ideas? How about a simple spell that shows everyone who's is hostile to you? (Along with detect life, a perk maybe?)

There are now friendly-npcs roaming in the forests, like hunters, merchants, warriors, guards, etc. I think hostile npcs show up as red dots on your compass (not sure).

You can usually tell by the music in Oblivion if they are friend or foe. But generally, in the wilds there are only a few types of friend: those who work on farms, pray at temples or are Imperial Guards (there are also sometimes inns far into the wild, and you occasionally see NPCs traveling outside them).

But otherwise, everything is hostile except for the deer, butterflies, etc.

They aren't attacking you?

Cast Calm on the lot of them and then walk up and see what happens.

Well uhm... helpful, anyway... Being a fully armored warrior with low sneaking skill I don't want to get arsed to sneak all the way up to someone just to see if they're friend or foe via my compass, risking myself getting caught!

I feel like the compass will be a big part in Skyrim so I would use that and find the red dots.

I suppose you wait to see if they're baddies and leg it after you. If you're unsure and want to surprise attack, quicksave and see what happens.

I think you would realize after playing the game what hostile npcs wear and what peaceful settilers wear.

My advice, swing first, ask questions later.... or just loot their corpses

Hold on is that in the game? If it is it's not really an immersion breaker; more of a gameplay breaker.

Compass off hoooooo!

Usually hostile npc's will unsheathe their weapon and run towards you upon seeing you.
I'm turning off all markers on my compass.

Or.. you could just do it Vsions' way

I think only certain enemies like Giants and Dragons. I didn't see any for bandits.

In the great words of Grandpa Simpson," Kill them all and let God sort them out."

Yeah, unless I can learn to tell on sight from actually playing, it might be a lot of:

1 - Save
2 - Approach to confirm identity
3 - reload to deal with accordingly

I can't help but laughing on the answers)) Especially those about "generally the hostile NPCs draw out their weapons and run towards you"

I strongly advice to sneak all the time if you are a stealth-based character... and the fully armoured warrior can just go straight, not being afraid of anyone ;)

Straight from vsions! That might be a problem for the local guards though..

Anyways, if you explore some random mountain side and find a random fort in the middle of nowhere and there's folks there.. There's a huge chance they ain't friendly-or even human.

Well I was playing this no-save game and I saw this guy running through the forest, of course I shoot him in the face and loot him... not noticing at the time it was an imperial forester.

Well it ended up having half of chorrol being dead.
