Templar Concern

Post » Thu Mar 20, 2014 6:13 am

So I played beta and really enjoyed Templar. That said, I didn't get far, only level 12 or so and after scouring the forums I've made tweaks and changes to what I think works better.

For example I was a Heavy Armor Templar, but after reading about the armor cap, It made more sense to switch over to light armor and 1h/shield for my style of play. So I did that. Now the thing that really concerns me is what I am hearing about endgame.

I plan on having a DPS build and a Healing build.

DPS Build = 1h/Shield + Aedric Spear line

Heal Build = Resto Staff + Restoring Light line

Here is what I am hearing about that worries me.

1. Templars are useless late game. I keep hearing this mainly because of some regen issue or something of the sort, and have heard many comments that sorcs are better healers. It doesn't bother me that a sorc would heal better, it really doesn't as it adds versatility to the game. What bothers me is the comments about Templars being subpar.

2. Templar DPS builds are useless late game. This I've seen pop up recently because of some change with Medium armor? I didn't quite understand it, but again its something I am hearing.

Again, I am simply going off of what I am reading..and yes they are message boards where you will predictably hear more complaints than praises (the people who like it are out playing) . If this is TRUE however, it worries me because I am an MMO Vet. I've learned my lesson about playing a subpar class and hoping for a buff. This is all assuming it is subpar but let me know what your thoughts are and if anyone who HAS reached 50.. please let me know what its like Templar wise.

If you like the look of the class abilities, and the purpose behind them, stick with templar even if they are in a rough spot atm. Balance is always changing, so while it might be harder right now, it will not always be so(either they get buffed, or everyone else is brought down).

Tell that to all the subpar classes that were in WAR... a lot of them never got the "promised" balance in 5 years. back to the OP, unfortunately the game is to new to say what is good at the end game. I too will be rolling a Templar, but at the same time I won't consider it my "main", until it proves that it can be.

i got to lvl 27 as a dual wield , medium armor wearing templar. it was almost faceroll the keyboard mode , granted this is far from my first experience at putting characters together either though. i dont remember my exact layout of skill points but i could sufficiently heal and dps at the same time , switching between aoe and single target dps when i needed to. pretty much it fealt like it was an alright class upto lvl 27 , nothing seemed to be broken with medium armor as well. although that could all be past lvl 27...but i would most def take what anyone is saying at this point with a grain of salt.(considering no one has made it end game or even knows what end game is like other then pts people and they are still under nda till launch , so they cant tell you any credible information). that being said the way i had my templar set up catered to my play style. he was a dps with support heals.

People roll sorcs to dps, not heal. If a sorc wants to go into healing mode; they can prob do a decent job. Although, with the templar reso light line passives and being dedicated to heals instead of dps i think the templar wins out.

Also, people need heals no matter what, especially in in RVR.

Templars shine as any if the three archtypes till 50. Once you hit vet level content you will be oom and basically worthless.

That said I still think this lack of active regen will be changed soon™.

Templar will be main, I had much fun in beta but it concerns me also. Putting all that time into a class to have it be lackluster in the end is very frustrating.

hopefully , although as a support healer mainly focusing on dual wield skills which use stamina not magic (unless i am not understanding the regen not working and its both stamina and magic regen are busted) i wont have to much to worry about with proper magic management. are there not potions that are strong enough to keep the magic up in the vet content?

Templars are far from worthless at level 50. The change to restoring spirit forced high level Templars to change their play style and only the people that refuse to do so are saying they are useless.

The change to that one spell didn't ruin the entire class, if you think it did I would like to hear how you think so.

Templar is still very versatile, and make great healers, dps, and tanks. They just don't have unlimited magicka anymore. Properly enchanting your gear with magicka recovery and reduced spell cost will go a very long way in making sure you don't run out of magicka, also make sure you are using efficient spells, not just spamming the best ones. You can heal almost indefinitely with the low cost AE heal.

I have found that it is better to play a class that you enjoy instead of playing the most powerful class. Buffs come and go, but having fun is a must for me. Yeah it svcks when your class stays underpowered for years at a time, but I am somewhat of a masochist, so even then I don't mind.

I was in the same boat as you OP, i recently decided to go back to NB, Templars will be getting love from patches in the future, and im not trying to discourage you from being a Templar. Release is just too close and i want to only level 1 character so i chose NB

I loved my dps temp. I wore mostly light armor with a piece each of medium and heavy to advance those lines. I primarily spammed biting jabs.

I'll bet templar end game with light armor will be extremely strong for DPS. With that said, I think mixing armor types would better suit a templar dps/heal. Templars do get some great AOE.

Do not let the class define how you play.

This game is so close in terms of balance because everyone can do almost the same.

What im saying is that the templar will always have an effective build no matter what.

Even if Templar is weak, I've decided to torment myself with it.

I play primarily as a tank and I know that everyone with a sword/board/heavy can tank but the attack styles of the Templar really rubbed me the right way. Great spear animations and good "holy" skills. I loved the way you stand praying with the heal ultimate.

I leveled a Dragonknight up to 16 this weekend and really, really tried to like it but the skill effects... argh... Even when realizing that the DK will probably be the go to endgame tank due to damage mitigation I hated being Sonic The Hedgehog 90% of the time. Oh maybe I should pick that heal? Semi-invisible character with a gigantic heart. How cute. Its not like I want to see my character or anything like that. Maybe they should add an option to transform the DK into MLP? That'd be great.

Cant have the game be too easy :/

Mircutio is a level 50, VR6 Templar on the PTS server who is active on these forums. He'll chime in to this thread sooner or later most likely.

i did google the name , and all it came up with was one topic from this forum. the rest of it was google trying to tell me i was trying to type in mercutio...cause computers always know best...stupid google..either way i thought pts was under NDA still and giving out any credible information on any content that hasnt had the nda lifted on it was a breach of the terms. the beta's we were on had the NDA lifted , unless the NDa for it was lifted as well...which doesnt make sense why it would still be PTS since being private is kinda why it is a PTS...who knows, would it really be my fault if i dont believe it? i mean considering all the trolling on these forums are we for sure this is a guy playing PTS? and not just some troll making a story up and trolling you all?

NDA is lifted for the PTS, and there are several PTS Templars on tamriel foundry and reddit saying the same thing.
