Is there a way to skip this annoying area? I'm playing as a very intelligent and charismatic character, but I still can't force that tribal guy to let me through!
I've always easily completed it with my warrior characters, but my latest char can't lift a twig to save his life. I've tried outrunning them but that seems the coward's way out. Is there no way to use my abilities to my advantage in this situation?
-either to ask him a question, to which he responds he hasn't got time to reply -or to tell him I'm on my way to the temple of trials -or that I need to go back to the village.
With the last option I can continue saying that I'll kick his ass if he doesn't let me through, but he still doesn't let me through. The other options are a dead end.
You only really have to fight a few ants, then the guy at the end. I'd suggest perhaps making a save right before you talk to him so you don't have to do all the walking again.

Seriously... I just walk right through it ~its ants. Once you are six hex away from them, just click 'end combat' and be on your way.
The Temple of Trials is a non-skipable, undocumented 'tutorial' so to speak. The Ants and Scorpions in there have a very low perception, so activating sneak during a battle gets out of most battles without to much delay(if you are a few hex away from them). If you pass a Speech - Check on the (Tagged speech problably 60% or higher, don t remember exactly) 'Door Guardian' Tribal convincing him that a fight is not nessesary etc. u get 600XP exiting the temple instead of the 300XP fighting him. Or maybe a pickpocket attempt to get the Key (i never did that) Even trough i recommend u get all items in the Temple cause they are a good start to trade for a half decent armor when u get to Klamath.
Ok this is what I did when I played a low endurance and low strength char. Which was almost every char except for the first. Play hit and run with the insects, might take you a while but you can kill them all that way without a scratch. Punch ones move as far back as possible and let them come to you. Rinse and repeat. You can avoid most scorpions until you are a little stronger but you should level up ones. When you level up save in a different slot, you might want to spent skill points differently if you happen to get stuck somehow with the gate guard. There are alternatives to fighting the gate guard, but you should be able to beat him after a few tries with low Str and End. Just save before fighting him.
You can totally talk your way out of fighting the guard at the end. Its been a while, but the dialogue goes along the lines of saying: Why do we have to fight at all I could get hurt, you could get hurt I'm the chosen one and wouldn't be able to do the quest that the elder has asked me to do.
Sorry it is only something like that but not exactly. Been several years since I played the Awesome game.

Aye you're right, I thought there was another way except combat.
And there is as Cryptales mentioned, but you need 60% speech and mine is 55%, with Char and Int being both at 9.
Nice new Avatar btw :tops:
Thanks! ^_^ Daggerfall.

I didn't tag good natured because my combat skills plummet to 0% except for small guns which will be at 15%. I now have small guns less than 50%, but at least it's a viable option sometimes (for rats and such).
I still have no idea how I'm going to battle super mutants later on, .

Super mutants? We are talking about Fallout 2, aren't we? The only Super mutants in Fallout 2 are in Broken Hills and they aren't hostile. What you'll really need good luck with battling is the Enclave forces. D:

Diplomatic Characters are NPC s reliant wich means u need Companions ... the high Charisma is helpfull in rising the limit on how many u can have at a time .... but more than 3 is always a crowd. And your Char. could always aid the combat inflicting 'status' effects upon enemies using small arms (scoped hunting rifle) or the acclaimed gauss rifle - (go for the Eyes , Boo go for the Eyes) and don t forget to equip them properly ... but watch your back!

Not really. What about the "remnants of Master's army" encounter ?

around San Francisco - lots of tough aliens n centaurs a little more west towards NCR are lost of encounters with supermutants... sometimes u can catch them even 'close' to New Reno meanwhile Enclave forces are mostly encounters north from San Fransisco ... around Navarro some decent weapons n powerarmor on Npc s help, if they have pea-shooters, leather armor or even combat armor thats a likely game over XD

The ruins of Mariposa Military base is full of very hostile mutants. (yes, even in FO2).
that requires prior knowledge though, I believe this is his first run through. Anywya generally speaking there is a "set" order thats generally much easier to follow for the newbie with out striking out to get specific items "out of order" so to speak.
I've played through Fallout 2 countless times, just never as a charismatic character. I've played it as an idiot though, that was fun.
Anyway, I just ran past the temple in the end. I'm in the Den now, and I'm not taking any short routes to finish the game.
EDIT: And I realised I always do the same thing when I get to the Den. Kill the merchant, get the leather armour and pistol, sell everything off except Buffout and Jet. Make monies.
hehe well sorry about that then! I never killed any merchant, I just sell everything I can from the village to that girl in klamath I I usually just have enough to get sulik then try and take an encounter with two side vs.
