Terrible voice acting?

Post » Fri Jul 29, 2011 4:52 pm

I've personally heard a conversation between an NPC mother and an NPC son. She was paniced, rushing to her son to tell him about a dragon she saw over Bleak Falls Barrow...she was frantic and almost eccentric in her way of telling her tale...the son didnt believe her and warned that if she told other's of her story, they would think she was crazy...evidently dragons are still considered legends in Skyrim and not many know of their return.

Weren't those three examples all the same voice actor?

I really don't understand the hatred against the Voice Actor of the female redguards.. she was just fine..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1pMDXHTJYs

The issue wasn't the quality of voice actors, it was the quantity. There were only... What was it? Fourteen non-unique voice actors? At any rate, the new seventy will fix most of the problem.
(Although, honestly, even that kind of worries me... If you attribute ten of them to unique voices, then there are six for each race: two for children, two for young people, and two for old people. So really, there's only tangibly one more voice actor per gender per race. But that's still an improvement!)

Agreed. Morrowind did a much better job with the voice-acting.

I also agree with another post that said it's not the fault of the voice-actors, but the fault of the devs. There was obviously a failure of editing, and a failure to communicate, with the actors, what was needed.

Sorry I'm picky...

There's also the possibility that one voice actor could voice different characters from different races too.

Not all the dialogue was voice-acted, as it is in Oblivion, but Morrowind did have voice-acting.

The npc voices got a lot better with fallout 3 and new vegas so I'd assume they'd continue the trend with tha it really seems like they've learned how to do it well now.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_D8Z6DCJTs8 Go to 3:00 in this video. When she says "civilians! It's time to move out!" it just sounds terrible.

Thank you very much, sir, for saving the time of remembering the instance I was thinking of. This is a PERFECT example. And its not like you can do stuff like that on accident, if you mess up you can do another take. THAT, is just a total lack knowing your own damn profession.

To the nay sayers out there, this is not personal. This is unadvlterated fact. She. Was. Terrible.

I thought the voice acting for all of the characters in Oblivion was very good. I never even really thought of the female Redguards as having bad voicing acting. Not enough voice actors was what annoyed me. I got sick of hearing the same voices over and over. I am very glad to hear there will be many more voice actors in Skyrim. :)

Well said!!! Yeah, what he said! :goodjob:

There were only about three good voice actors in Oblivion (excluding the guest roles) so I do hope Bethesda is far more selective this time around. My biggest fear is that they're keeping Lynda Carter, who svcked any sense of immersion out through her pseudo-angry expressions and general lack of anything powerful in her voice. She may well be a great actor on screen, but behind the mic she's simply terrible. I'll have to facepalm if she's voicing female Nords again, especially given that the race is the star player of this game.

Keep the guy who does Khajit/Argonians doing Khajit only, the "Stop right there criminal scum!" guy doing great work, and the Melisande person (can't think of any other specific examples of her) soothing me with her sweet voice! :icecream:

The worst single bit of voice acting in Oblivion was that elf who runs up to you on the road as you approach Kvatch and tells you it's been overrun.

You guys can go check on YouTube about the voice acting. There's some dude that talks about the audio recording and he has a sample of dialogue someone read. It's the voice of Esburn, the member of the Blades. It's sounds great.

Even with 70 different voice actors, if you think about it it isn't that much. I mean you'd think the essential characters would take up at least 100 or more, for example:

- The Dovahkiin
- Alduin
- The head of all the guilds
- Main quest givers
- Guards
- Towns people
- Different races of children
- Guild members
- Daedra shrines
- Monks

There's quite a lot of people

Several times I noticed in OB that voices didn't match the individual, but matched the script actor.

I loved the Dunmer voices in MW, they were gravelly awesomem, sinister, dark undertones.

Yeeeeeeeah, but they're not going to have a unique voice for every.single.character are they? Look at it this way, 70 Actors is like 60 more than Oblivion.

werent there only like 3-4 voices in oblivion for the general population?

argonians and khajiit shared the same voice, dunmer and altmer had the same voice, etc...

with 70 voice actors in skyrim, i assume it'll be spread out like this...

the general population, non-special NPCs:

one voice actor each for the males and females of each race, that is 20 voice actors right there, if each race and gender have a different voice actor.

then one voice actor each for the male and female children of each race, thats another 20 right there, again, if each race/gender gets their own child voice.

so thats 40 voice actors just on the general population.

the other 30 will probably be spread out on unique NPCs, dragons, etc.

hopefully i didnt word that too oddly to make it confusing, its hard for me to word it correctly.

My guess is the voice talent will range from fairly good to great.

What I'm worried about is cheesy dialogue, Oblivion suffered from this quite a bit.

And in the demo, after freeing Arvel he says ''You fool! Why would I share the treasure with anyone?'', only thing missing is the cheesy ''Muhahahahaha!''.

But that's a very minor bump for me.

She'll almost certainly be back. But at least she probably won't be all the Female Redguards. Although, can you name a single female Redguard in Oblivion off the top of your head?

I can name multiple. And I all think they were acted well.

Favorite all time voice is Morrowinds female khajiit voice, "Muthsera"

It's what made me ditched my male argonian character and start as a khajiit because of it :P

Wow, and I thought I was the only one who found Arvel's line really corny. I too wish dialog was a bit more flowy, like it was in Morrowind. Even Alvor's comment about Riverwood felt pretty lacking to me.
