Thank you.

That's quite alright, but you must understand that in my mind, 'reference' was a broad term so easter eggs could be in that category. The idea, as explained above, was meant as broad as we want to/can make.

How about a Mort reference.

And, Dragonborn1, please explain why you don't want a Pratchett easter egg inn.

Heck, he is the most shoplifted writer of the UK :P maybe a reference to that. Maybe a beggar that claims to be a writer but don't earn money because everyone steals his books instead of buyin them.

If he has fans on the dev team then there is a possibility of an easter egg, which wouldn't be that big of a deal. It's not like there aren't any Lovecraft references.

There are Lovecraft references because his work inspired some parts of the game. For instance, the Hackdirt/Deep Ones thing is supposedly based on a Lovecraft story. But why should someone get referenced simply for existing? If one of Pratchett's works provided some inspiration for a quest or some other aspect in the game then fine, but it makes no sense to just arbitrarily give him a reference simply for being a good writer. There's plenty of those that are also worthy of mention. Andre Norton would also be a good candidate, her Witch World series also dealt with fantasy and magic, as did a number of her other books. Piers Anthony would be another one, with his Xanth books. But did they actually have any influence anywhere in the game? What makes Pratchett so special that he should get a mention and not those others?

Because he is a world famous author that actually plays TES.

Actually, the Hackdirt reference itself WAS the lovecraft reference.

If he's made no contribution to the Elder Scroll series at all, even in the form of inspiration, why should he get any recognition in the game? If they did that Bethesda may as well offer recognition to a whole host of other worthy people, like Ghandi, Abraham Lincoln or even J.R.R. Tolkien. After all, he influenced the whole fantasy genre more than Pratchett ever did.

I liked the JRR Tolkein reference in Oblivion, over anything else, if they do add them to Skyrim (most likely) itd be cool to add another of Tolkein's works into Skyrim.

Good point Belanos, obviously and ultimately the decision would be Bethesda's to do such a thing but it does make sense to give him a reference simply for being a good writer. I say this because the sense is that even if he just 'a good writer' and has had no involvement/influence at all in the series, if someone likes him and his novels that could well be reason enough, because there are sometimes when an in depth reason is not enough. I guess you could say I'm in that little pocket, I like him and his novels and believe that he is a good writer, they aren't in depth but they don't have to be.

Someone said they didn't want a Pratchett reference and you said "It's an easter egg". Why have a poll if people can't have their own opinion. See what i'm on about? I don't care if it's an easter egg.

No.. someone said they couldnt see why. To wich the answer is: its an easter egg.
Then you said: the poll is a farce.
Because you cant vote 'no' or something?
Oh wait.

This entire thread serves as a perfect example of why what references to include should be left up to the people making the game.

To be honest I like the thought of having a Foul Ole Ron equivalent, or a Henry Coffin being non-invited to the best parties in oppostion to the prim, well educated beggars of Oblivion.

Pretty flimsy reason for saying he "should" be referenced in the game, I'm sure he's not the only well known person who plays the games. While I have no real objection of him getting mentioned somewhere, there should be a reason for it, not "just because".

Others have yet to come forward let alone contribute to the modding community.

I wouldn't mind a quest withing a carpet as a tribute to Terry's children's book, "The Carpet People".

I voted no, but not entirely willingly. Nirn is not Discworld, so I have no desire at all to see any fairly blatant reference to the latter in a game set on the former. However, some very subtle reference - (not to highlight the bad news, but) something akin to the Ashes of Lord Brinne from Morrowind, would be quite nice really.

I'd like to see a wizard confused about potatoes and women. Maybe you help him figure out his dilemma in a quest? Failing that, a skeleton with diamond teeth, or a chest that follows you around.

A little fun fact: Terry Pratchett has written some dialogue lines for the Oblivion mod Companion Vilja! :)

There should be a Courier, or a postman, called Moist Von Lupwig.

Or a chest in a cave that gets up and walks away on little feet as you get closer to it XD

You have a much loved, world famous fantasy author, who has created an incredibly successful and uniquely brilliant series of books. It's a series which is to an extent built on the same foundations as the elder scrolls - a deep love and respect of the fantasy genre and culture. On the side, he also happens to play Oblivion, and has in fact talked about it and the modding scene in media http://theauthorhour.com/terry-pratchett/extras.php?autoplay=y (Silence it and scroll down...), and he has even personally contributed to the modding scene as a playtester.

Given both the obvious thematic connnections between his work and the elder scrolls, his success and fame as one of the most read authors in the world, and his personal connection with the franchise, I utterly fail to see how anyone could construe a small reference or tribute as out of place. Bare in mind that a 'low impact' reference, such as calling a pub the broken drum, would in no way damage the experience for anyone (whilst making me grin from ear to ear). It would also fit in with the nature of the other references in the elder scrolls games.

I'm all for it

Obviously you didn't understand my point. The reason Lovecraft inspired anything in the game is because there are fans of his on the dev team. Thus, they put in something pertaining to him. If there are fans of Prachett on the dev team, and they put in references to him or his work it would be exactly the same thing. I've never read anything of Prachett, nor heard of the guy, but if the dev's desire to put in an easter egg that fits the game what's the problem?

Discworld 1, 2 and Noir are actually my favorite adventure games. That's right, better than Monkey Island and what have you.

I love the books and would like to see a new Discworld game soon (I can always dream.)

That being said, I would love to get a "WIZZARD" hat. It could be an early reward from the mages guild.

Then that would be a reason, on some level he's influenced one of the people who are working on the project. But that's not what the OP is suggesting. He's simply saying include him "just because". The fact that he's participated in the modding community would be a reason as well, I wasn't aware he had done that and the OP failed to mention that fact. All he mentioned was that he played the games, which alone isn't good enough IMO.

You're right, that wouldn't be, which is why I gave a credible reason in my original post.
