Terry Pratchett

Post » Wed Sep 22, 2010 1:54 am

Right so I have posted this point a couple of times before but I thought it better to make it a bit more widespread. So Terry Pratchett for those who don't know is a writer and arguably his most well known novels (and my favourite) are the Discworld series. My main point of focus is on the Discworld mainly because it has common factors e.g. Magic, many guilds (including a beggars guild), rather sort of medieval sort of feel (especially in Ankh-Morpork). These books are a great read and he has been writing them for years. What I feel is a clincher is that he does play videogames and in a video on youtube he does make a note-worthy compliment about Oblivion, (if you wish for the vid link just ask). All that aside I think that this man deserves a bit of recognition or reference because in my vbiew I think he is thoroughly worthy.

As a foot note I do appreciate that there are other writers and other series which utilise similar aspects from the minute list above however I have not read them and I am not talking about them just so you know

So what do you think? Do you have any ideas for referencing? (If you agree of course.)

A referene to the Luggage maybe?
Or an reference to Sam Vimes?

Where's my cow!

Did you get the number of that donkey cart?

A luggage reference would scare a lot of people.

I love Pratchett's work, and it's great to hear he plays TES!

The great majority of Discworld stuff wouldn't really be appropriate references in Skyrim, I think (they might have been, in Oblivion).

But have you read -- or seen, as it's wonderfully illustrated -- The Last Hero, starring Cohen the Barbarian? Although still very comedic, that's much closer to what I could picture as Skyrim-related. Cohen and the Horde, Evil Harry Dread, Vena the Raven-Haired, et al would fit right into a lighter-hearted Skyrim moment.

If he's made no contribution to the Elder Scroll series at all, even in the form of inspiration, why should he get any recognition in the game? If they did that Bethesda may as well offer recognition to a whole host of other worthy people, like Ghandi, Abraham Lincoln or even J.R.R. Tolkien. After all, he influenced the whole fantasy genre more than Pratchett ever did.

Yea, having a reference to Pratchett doesn't sit well with me.

I have not read/seen it however I was just thinking about the barbarians, although Hrun came to mind first. However there are still a lot of things you could do with parodying (but not parroting). I think the ultimate parody would be on Rincewind who could be parodied to be a great wizard.

The pointy hat would be great for a mage.

Otherwise I think Skyrim is going to be a more serious game, so any too comical stuff is likely out. There could be a monkey...APE, APE! *THUD! Chirp, chirp*...Did you get the number of that donkey cart?

Its not about recognition, its about references. Tolkien got a LotR reference in Oblivion. I mean, really, you sound like you don't know what your talking about. Its not about deserving to be in the game, its about referencing to something outside the TES universe to give the players a funny moment.

If he has fans on the dev team then there is a possibility of an easter egg, which wouldn't be that big of a deal. It's not like there aren't any Lovecraft references.

Want Pratchett references? Play http://www.nethack.org/common/index.html. Tourist character class, entire Discworld quest line.

Not that most people here could handle the game, no flashy DX11 graphics with every possible action animated in. Come to think, forget I even mentioned it.

Exactly MartinJF, besides this is only a poll on a forum and i knew people would not agree because no one/no one's material can be universally liked.

Pratchett's a lot more relevant than Gandhi or Lincoln (it could be argued that he's more worthy of recognition too, but we most definitely shouldn't go there), as he writes fantasy worlds not a million miles away from The Elder Scrolls. And I assume the OP is thinking more of easter eggs or one-off bits of dialogue, which don't affect the overall theme of a game.

That was the general idea, even if they don't penetrate my thick skull.

Terry is a great guy and for about a year or so he was one of our best beta testers for Craftybits. If you read his latest book keep an eye out for a reference to our mod. Hint: It involves replicating potatoes.

Like the forum, and the game, if you want to think down that path. If you think a thread shouldn't exist and you don't mean to contribute, it's probably better to report it and leave it be.

And in that spirit...

How about a reference to the Night Watch, presumably involving a city or town's guards?

What are you on about? Why?
Poll asks about easter eggs involving Terry Pratchett, wich is a good idea.
Lots of easter eggs in Elder Scrolls, about star wars, Indiana Jones etc.
So.. what are you on about?

Well, we've already seen 3 pokemon references. I mean, seriously, they have done Pokemon but Prattchett is too far off?

I see what he is trying to point at but I did try leave the topic as broad as people wanted it to be hence the use of the generic word of "references" so it could even just be name dropping, nothing concrete. Thought it would be a better discussion that way.

Someone said they didn't want a Pratchett reference and you said "It's an easter egg". Why have a poll if people can't have their own opinion. See what i'm on about? I don't care if it's an easter egg.
