Do TES and Fallout really appeal to different fans?

Post » Fri Jun 24, 2011 1:18 pm

Personalty i feel that Fallout was bought and produced as a test to see how people would react to things. I think it would be cool if they used Fallout 3/NV to test things they wanted to add to Skryim. As Todd said: Right after Fallout 3 was finished we started working on Skryim

Been a big fan of both franchises since well before Bethesda acquired Fallout.

Meh, not a big fan of Fallout... and i'd much rather Skyrim be influenced by Morrowind, Oblivion and Daggerfall than Fallout 3. Similarities with Fallout 3 should be kept to a minimum and disguised to suit a fantasy setting.

Like I mentioned before, most talk of "influenced by Fallout 3" is talking about the game mechanics, programming tricks, background calculations (like the level scaling system). Not exploding heads, guns, and mutants. :) So, there's really no need to "disguise" the stuff for a fantasy setting - it's all in the nuts & bolts.

Just want to point out that "Fallout" isn't synonymous with Fallout 3.

Not only are there fans of Fallout 3 who aren't TES fans and vice versa, but there are fans of Fallout 1 and 2 who aren't fans of Fallout 3. Quite a few of them, as a matter of fact.......

i play both, and i believe that bringing a few mechanics over from fallout will help TES, but it depends on the mechanics, and their implementation. a perk system should work if done correctly, but i do wish they weren't called perks in skyrim. ability or talent would be better imo.

I can't really say. I love both games. I like the punk apocalypse with western elements vibe to Fallout, but I also love the medieval settings of TES. It depends on my mood, really... :disguise:

fallout appeals to a different audience because of its setting a post nuclear apocolyptic vision of our future sure it has fantasy elements mainly in how creatures have mutated radiation induced mutation never has such beneficial outcomes. but it has guns high explosives and the occasional robot

I'll believe that when i've seen the perks. :P

To me Skyrim just made things even better, butbi voted both because no one would expect me to play these type of games but I wasn't really into rpg until oblivion and fall out.

I am a BGS fan though(not to be confused with Beth Soft, god I hate almost everything they publish).

Back before the company split into BGS and gamesas, they were just gamesas. When they were one entity they were still publishing games made by other developers and yes, most of them were just awful.

The only relationship between Fallout 3 perks and Skyrim perks is the name. If they'd called them Talents you wouldn't be saying that. (But I'm sure someone would be saying that they copied from Diablo or WoW).

As for the one thing they have explicitly connected, the fact that Skyrim's level scaling is inspired by/like Fallout 3's? Yeah, that's a good thing.

(On a more general note, I have to imagine that game companies learn and improve with each game they make. So, from that point of view, YES - I hope that the game design lessons they learned making Fallout 3 weren't ignored when they made Skyrim. Doesn't mean that there'll be mutants or guns in the next game, just better game design.)

wtf is wrong with you even todd howard is saying that they are taking the idea directly from fallout because they liked it

Befor fallout 3, TES games, mass effect games, and battlefield games (cod is a little to cartoonish for me) were my fav games. Now the fallout series can join that exclusive club,3 at first because its like TES games, but I even went back to the old ones, fallout 1 and 2 were a blast. Now NV if the game I am mainly playing(been that way since release),and I love it.Only a worthy game can take its place. And gues what it is? :tes:

I mean, I liked Fallout 3, but I was a fan of the series before that and I could definitely see why original fans wouldn't have enjoyed the new direction. I'm just happy to see people merely acknowledge the existence of the rest of the series. Reminds me of way back in the day when Final Fantasy 7 exploded on to the scene and suddenly it was cool and nobody had played any of the previous installments.

From what I have seen TES perks are nothing like Fallout's. Fallout's are more about general gameplay with some specific weapon and skill perks while Skyrim will focus more on specific weapon/spell effects, some general skill ones, and additional abilities with no general gameplay changes. Fallout is more generalized and Skyrim will focus on specific aspects of skills.

I think they took it to right where it needed to be... Any further and it would start to feel too much like Fallout.

Fallout 4 will probably be on the next generation consoles so by the time the next elder scroll comes out they would have some experiance with it meaning the the next elder scrolls will look like what morrowind to oblivion look like the first time amazing?. and the game mechanics will be incredible. well thats how I see it if fallout games keep coming before the elder scrolls. so fallout is basicly helping the elder scrolls series but only if fallout games release before any elder scrolls.

I remember as a kid using my holiday gift money to pay the $80 (that is like almost $200 in today's terms, I think) for FF6 (3 for American SNES) when it was released. It was epic in scale and effects for an SNES game... hardly an RPG (very few FF games are actual RPGs) but still an awesome experience for the time. :P

Some have suggested that TES and Fallout fans are in completely different bases. I disagree. Perhaps we'll get a better idea from this poll. Also, I did not give the option to be on the fence in the second poll. Unless you have not played Fallout, you know how perks generally affect character development. Weigh the pros and the cons (if you have not already done so) and vote.

I've played Fallout 3 and Fallout NV, but I've got 100x more gameplay in Morrowind and Oblvion (and Daggerfall way back when). Nuclear wastelands get depressing after a while.

Of course I'm happy that they take things from FO3 to incorporate them in Skyrim. If they have good design ideas in one game, why not use these ideas in other games?
Just look at level scaling. It wasnt done well in Oblivion, so they improved it in FO3 and now they will use this system in Skyrim. In the end we get better games and thats what matters

Do both games appeal to the same fans? Yeah obviously some will like both, some won't. Some just like the open world type of game play Beth creates regardless of genre and theme while some won't. The design of both titles is fairly similar in the way they create the worlds and tell their stories so obviously a lot of the design and technology is going to bleed over from one game to the other, which is great because they can continue to refine and improve the way they build their games. It would be rather silly not to take improvements in one and apply them to the other.

Lessons learned in OB helped make FO:3 better, FO:3, will make Skyrim better, Skyrim will make FO:4 better, etc....

Personally yes, I enjoy both.

I would really like to see a complex damage threshold and damage resistance system for Skyrim, but I think they will keep OB's extremely simple damage resistance system since they simplified Fallout 3 to that. :(

EDIT: I am one of the people who was disappointed with what BGS did to Fallout, but the game was fun its own way. I just won't buy Fallout 4 if it is more like 3 instead of New Vegas.

Are you happy Bethesda is bridging the gap between TES and Fallout by incorporating features from Fallout (i.e. perks).

No. And it's vice versa too. Fallout should not incorporate anything from TES either.

They are separate, different franchises with different goals and design and that's how they should've stayed.

Awh c'mon you can't say you thought the Oblivion leveling system was better than the FO3 system  They're not mixing the franchises just using some successful game designs from Fallout. Doesn't their the same franchise or anything.

I can't. And I wont.

They're not the same franchise, yet, today, they play almost exactly alike, with the same design goals (change magic for guns and implement some remodeling to Oblivion and you get Fallout 3).
