TES equivalent of the United Nations? Would kind of makes se

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 5:19 am

Do you guys think it would ever happen in TES? I mean we formed our own United Nations after the Great Wars of the early 20th century. WW1 and 2. The Great War with the Thalmor is the second of its kind albeit they were spaced very widely apart. Tiber Septim was fighting them the first time and won though he did use a big stompy time traveling robot to beat down the Thalmor.

I think it is relatively safe to assume a third Great War is coming in the near future so if that does transpire it may make people more wary of war. A strong Akaviri invasion force could also lead to something similar.

That could lead to a forming of some kind of League of Nations kind of deal. Do you think this would ever happen with tes given that vast differences between the races and do you think it would be a good thing for the series(notice I do not say Tamriel, I say the GAME series).

Thoughts?
-Pros
-Cons
-Reasons for?
-Reasons against?

Kind of hard to be the UN if you have most of the control and make most if not all the rules. If anything the council of the Septim Empire was similar but not the same. It was more reminiscent of the old Roman Republic. I think the way things are TES is going to be a separate nations deal for awhile. Idk if there will be anything equivalent to the UN though. Not that the UN is all that effective at stopping the big powers from doing anything they want anyways...

Implying the UN isn't basically a legitimizing facade on the US's exercise of power overseas?

Yes, let us not get into that. That already pretty much was in game and was called the Empire.

I am thinking of what the UN should have been like. A very neutral group that represented all Nations.

That would require more than 2 power bases. In Tamriel there is the Empire and the Dominion and part of the Dominions political agenda is the unconditional destruction of all mankind, an agenda that obviously doesn't lend itself well for a cooperative organisation. Heck, the Thalmor in Skyrim outright say that they don't consider the peace of the White-Gold Concordat a peace between equal parts, and thus they would consider a League of Nations as completely ridiculous as that would imply that they are equal with the Empire.

I think I need to reiterate.

By that I was implying that if events lead to a time where all/most of the nations are separate nearly equal entities, do you think they would form anything like a League of Nations?

If you actually read into Imperial lore, the Empire isn't a single authoritrian power throughout Tamriel. Its really a mix-match of Kingdom and City-States held together by the military backing of Cyrodiil who spread the Emperors will and policies. Note High Rock before the Warp of the West, the fact that Hammerfell and Morrowind are basically independent in their own right for being 'apart' of the Empire and how Argonia is only directly controlled by the Empire along the coasts. The Empire is the UN, or at least was prior to the Septim Empire's collapse and rise of Mede.

I wouldn't count out a leauge or alliance against a common threat, such as the Thalmor. The All Flags Navy was exactly that though it was short lived and disbanded after Thras was sunk.

Something like that is of little use unless something like that does happen though. So without the event there is no alliance. As soon as it is over it is over too.

Personally I think anything resembling a UN would take away from the gameworld. I was more curious about what people thought the effects of such a entity would be on the game series and the game world.

What? A lot of Empire's worked that way. Many Empire's kept the local government intact, so long as they listened to the Empire. They weren't a united group, unless you consider "do it or we'll kill you" a united group

They weren't the UN because some provinces got special treatment and because they were too weak to control anything during the end of the Third Era.

It certainly would be interesting if such a thing came to fruition.
