is tes going to continue to get simplified ?

Post » Mon Aug 09, 2010 9:22 pm

As long as I have pretty graphics I only need 2 classes, comabt and magic. Two abilities, hit and spell.

just kidding... But really I think skyrim will be more complicated and better than oblivion, they added crafting for deity's sake!

ignoring arena...

daggerfall- insane amount of skills, insanely large world, lots of lore and factions. multiple endings to the plot

morrowind- comparatively very small world but balanced out by incredibly detailed lore and landscape. highly detailed guild system. plot fleshed out fantastically. fantastic world. tod remains fairly uninfluenced

oblivion - few skills, low amount of armour slots, removal of cool stuff. low amount of lore, uninspired and repetitive landscape, basic guild system, generic and illogical plot. more emphasis on combat (although by itself the combat was still pretty poor). land is blatantly Tolkienified

skyrim- even fewer skils, removal of lots of stuff even from oblivion, combat is main focus, more conan and less tes, armour designs dont belong in tes.

estimated tes 6- even fewer skills, tiny randomly generated land, most likeley tod trying to imitate the latest fantasy movie with a little tes.

estimated tes 7- skills are combat, stealth and magic. another fantasy movie ripoff with a little tes involved.

(edit: everything they tell us about skyrim is that it is still simplified, the only instances that involve skyrim not being simplified is a dynamic overlay system for warpaint and stuff, the return of enchant and combat. thats it

Your complain too much it is good the way it is, your expectations are just too high, not everyone out there is a MLG RPG player and for the "Newbies" to RPG playing TESV they dont need to worry about getting destroyed because its too complex

It seems the closer to release a game gets, the more pessimists get angry with the little info we have saying that it is going to be a bad game. I was just on the SWTOR forums which is like 3 months from release and 60% of the topics are about how the game will svck and how everyone is disappointed. I'm actually glad they're simplifying it a bit. One handed and two handed for weapon skills just gives me more things to specialize in. In oblivion with the class system, I was limited, because I wanted to be a rogue, but also hold my own in a fight against multiple enemies.. and yeah that didn't work.

The skills being reduced doesn't take ANYTHING away from the gameplay.

the axe skill had been removed from MW to OB, yet you could still use an axe. that's just an example

and BTW, they're bringing back good landscapes!

Also, we've seen like what, TWO armors? and one of them is only a concept art

They NEVER said that combat is the main focus! it's just that in a RPG, stuff like evolutions to a combat system DO make a HUGE difference.

And you know what? I've seen games that had ONE armor slot: choose X or Y outfit.

And I honestly don't know what some here have against Tolkien. if he hadn't written his books, TES would have NEVER existed.
Also, I think that in LOTR the landscapes were simply amazing. If anything in OB got "tolkenified", it was the Daedric armor, which really looked similar to Sauron's one

and don't forget these points:

TES will NEVER be Fable. EVER. So there will still be skills, and enough of them to make the game fun

If all I cared about was numbers, I'd play other games, mostly FF (9999 hit anyone?). I prefer combat to be thrilling, rather than just "oh, I hit by 4! oh now I missed!"
that's pen and paper RPGs, doesn't really make good fun in a game

Also, are you REALLY a TES fan? if you were, you'd be a bit more optimistic, and understand why the games are different each time. I'll agree that Oblivion wasn't the best, but it didn't svck either.
and as opposite to the NFS series, it won't take 6 games before the developpers change what people don't like.
they TRY NEW THINGS, which is what sets them appart from the usual RPG maker

and you know what? don,t buy it. we don't need people that are SO negative around here. go play WOW or something like that

In all honesty, I see Oblivion as a big improvement over Morrowind. I dare say that it is objectively better, and this is coming from someone who prefers Morrowind over Oblivion. I say this because look at the improvements of Oblivion over Morrowind. Overall, graphics are just a huge step up. AI is completely improved--people have schedules, go to sleep, eat, display emotions and overall have much better behavior--the average quest is much more in-depth, the combat is another huge step up. I could go on, but I think the most important thing:

It's much easier to roleplay in Oblivion.

That right there is enough to make Oblivion better than Morrowind as far as improvements go.

Now, again, as I said, I like Morrowind better, but it's only because of the overall atmosphere and the story. This is just a personal preference though. I cannot deny that Oblivion is a step up. Sure, Morrowind did certain things better, but Oblivion blew Morrowind out of the water in more ways than one.

TES series games in the eyes of the fans of their predecessors.

Arena- Well, it's the first. No predecessor..

Daggerfall- Many skills but dumbed down races. Too easy

Morrowind- Dumbed down, less skills, bad character creation. Bland (well it's all grey) and tiny world. Probably too easy is somewhere in the complaints of the Daggerfall fans, but its been a while since I played Morrowind, so don't really remember how easy it was. I do remember it wasn't harder than Daggerfall though.

Oblivion- Dumbed down, less skills, bland world, too easy.

Skyrim......

Each "generation" of fans seems to have the same complaints about the next one (apart from Arena which, although as good a game as the others, wasn't yet part of a defined enough series. And having internet to complain in wasn't as big back then). Seems to me fans of the previous games behave like those old people who whine about "In our time..." What happens is that they refuse to acknowledge that one of the strengths of the series is that each game feels different, yet familiar.

The fact that each game brings new fans into the scene, who are as excited as the old fans were, says they do something right. I don't say things couldn't be better, but there's too much pessimism for my taste.

I just thought that skyrims rugged landscape you need to survive in will definitly add to it. One reason I loved Vegas was the ruged landscape where you fight to survie. My gut tells me that skyrim will be like that but mutch better and I would hope that it will have an in depth hardcoe mode!

Yeah your right, I've been playing Skyrim for ages now, it just seems so simple compared to the others, I was as surprised as everyone else when it was released way ahead of schedule and we could all make extremely informed decisions about this game, rather than being pessimistic about a game not due till November based on a few snipets of written information.

You talk about simplification as if it is always bad.

"As simple as possible, but not simpler" - Albert Einstein

There is much to be gained by cutting superfluous mechanics in a product or a game. Ask yourself, would it be better if we broke down the sword skill 5 more times? how about 50 more times? How about we make an individual sword skill based on what hand you hold it in, what its made out of, how about how long the sword is to the nearest inch? How about we make a sword skill specific as to whether or not it has one or two edges? Does that make more sense to you?

Simplification can be empowering if done properly. Instead of having a plethora of different stats and skills that represent every action you do in a game, Bethesda is tying our actions together to create a more measured and logical progression of ability which is what the old "level" and "attribute" points were ever trying to relay in the first place. Have you been practicing with a sword a lot? You are probably getting better at using it and have learned some skillful moves: insert perk system here (or in older iterations you can imagine leveling up your 'sword skill' from 3 to 4 or from 1 to 10 etc.)

I believe we are seeing an evolution of old RPG elements that were held back from evolving because it was too complicated before. Now instead of using our imagination that we must be getting better at using swords since we have increased from level 10 to 20, we will actually be using our sword better in battle. Instead of imagining we are becoming powerful wizards because we have now purchased a higher level spell (purchasing spells or learning them through leveling has been in rpgs for a long time), you will have perks that will make you a more effective magic user when you fight other wizards. Same thing with the stealth system. Instead of elements of game play being left up to our imagination, Bethesda is evolving the genre further and helping us become what we have always wanted to be in an RPG. Measurably stronger and more powerful. We will get "perks" or new skills, strengths and powers that will benefit the kind of character we are acting as in the game. We can then use these new skills in real time battles to actually show we are stronger than we used to be. Honestly everything they are doing sounds like the perfect direction to me.

how do nordic and elven armor not belong in tes? you want them to get rid of dwarven too?

also i like how you leave environmental detail and the new crafting skills out. oh yeah, and the perks that let you customize all your skills

im really sorry this game doesnt have 10000 skills for you to choose 6 from.

The OP is incredibly biased. Oblivion is an amazing game. You think that Morrowind is the greatest then think that. You must see Oblivion for what it is though. Everything they took and out did not need to be in the game. Everything they added made the game better than Morrowind in those aspects. Who is the dev? You? Or Bethesda?

I second this statement, its just another disappointed person who wants 45 skills and is biased to anything less. I wish I could formulate an opinion on Daggerfall and Morrowind but I didn't play Morrowind much at all and Daggerfall was made when I was in kindergarten. Anyway, even if it looks like the ES is getting "simpler," who is to say that this is a bad thing? Wasn't Oblivion GOTY? Or at least RPG of the year?

Yes because we all know Todd Howard is evil and wants to simplify TES into a simple hack and slash like Dynasty Warriors...

quoted for truth... Seven Dragon made an excellent point as well. for example think about morrowind combat. do you really want to miss the mudcrab even though missing a damn boulder would be equally as easy, just because your skill is low?

I say we have to get rid of all these numbers and bars and pen+paper rpg stuff that was only used in the first place cuz there was nothing better yet. TES shouldnt be DnD.

Long as we have spears, all will be well. :P

:goodjob:

My words, exactly (if I had been able to express myself in Inglisj...)

Forget about lore and plots. Intricacies just make our brains hurt... No, spears (and the ressurection of cliff racers) will save the Elder Scrolls.

Basically, these threads follow the same guideline:

"Blah blah Morrowind much better more guilds blah blah blah blah blah."

Then the Oblivion bit comes.... which is 100% CERTAIN to contain these words:

Generic
Dumbed down
Bland
Simplified

Of course this isn't true, in my opinion. I really like both games. Anyway though i'm sure Skyrim will be utterly breathtaking!

3 less skills VS a robust perk system which pretty much vastly over-shadows that skill loss, body customization, radiant ai/story, more specificity in weapons, better combat, better leveling system than Oblivion, etc.

Simplification huh? :D

Also, Morrowind is not as good as you remember.
