My ps3 version does have a lot of lagging for Fallout 3. How are Sony and Microsoft going to continue their consoles' lives in the gaming world if what you said is the case? I just got my ps3 last year. It's still new to me.

I think the current consoles will be around for a few years more at least. Sony gave a 10 year life cycle for the PS3 so i think it's going to be quite a while before another Playstation. I think there are still things that can be done with optimization to help console games look and perform a little better, but there are obvious limits of course. We just aren't going to see major graphical enhancements in games until the next-gen cycle starts over again. I don't think developers are going to spend massive amounts of time and money on new technology unless they believe they can profit from it. Most of them probably don't believe they can do this with just the PC market. It's much more cost effective to be able to release a game that is very similar across all the platforms.

I don't care if the graphics are improved from a techinacal standpoint. I would much rather Bethesda focus on creating an interesting art style for The Elder Scrolls V. Oblivion was terribly bland to look at.

I thought Cyrodiil was amazing to look at.

However, the Shivering Isles were a really interesting sight.

Aside from the constant crashing, the shivering isles is 1000 X better than Cirodil.

Don't care much for graphics, other than the facial expressions etc on characters. Animations too. It's awful to follow a conversation in TES4, the characters are uncanny if that is the way to say it. Pretty much the same in Fallout 3.
Been playing Mass Effect, and enjoying conversations a lot! Why? More than 2 people can talk at the same time. They have decent facial expressions, realistic faces, and lots of different animations. Not to mention that through dialogue you can actually learn a lot from the gameworld, characters, and you have plenty of dialogue options, which are affected by the character perks. The dialogue writing is also MUCH better, so is the voice acting. Sorry Bethesda, you just can't do it as well.

This is sorta true. It wasn't optimized as good as it could have been, but upgrading your video card should make that a thing of the past. After upgrading my card, I now get 30-70 FPS in outdoor areas with all settings maxed.

However, the problem is I can play CRYSIS without lag, but not oblivion.

That is epic fail.

I admit that I was amazed by the graphics for the first several hours I played the game, but the..."sameness" of everything, for lack of a better word, really started to bother me after a while and still bothers me.

However, the Shivering Isles were a really interesting sight.

I thought the main city was interesting, and most of the items and armor and such, but I was never too impressed with the Shivering Isles landscape. To me, and this is only my opinion, but to me it seemed that adding giant mushrooms to the game was Bethesda's way of saying "There! You happy? Now shut the hell up!" to everyone who complained that Oblivion's world was boring compared to Morrowind.

as long as its got style?unique (hopefully ppl get wht im saying lol). Also make the species look cooler, like nords with wicked face paint options and big beards for example. So as long as its stylistic its all good. Not saying graphics dont matter, but okay setting and extraordinary graphics are worse than awesome setting with up to date, fine graphics. Id say anyway. Also, to be an awesome setting it doesnt have to be mushrooms. Regarding mushrooms, andd how without them OB landscape svcked, i wouldnt say OB setting svcked, but i doubt how many ppl actually saw much of it because of tht bloody FT system. Although i do like giant mushrooms.

Wow. back up. i love mass effect, but its completely diff. from bethesda games. a huge thing is tht everyone you talk to in ME is story related. For the record i loved fallout 3 dialogue, and they should just keep doing wht theyre doing. BTW fallout did some of tht better than ME like the perk or skill stuff tieing into conversations. ME dialogue is good though, but i dont think it belongs in TES. Unless they could magically put everything good in one game. like multiplayer, huge battles, being able to talk to everyone at once, be able to build your own house and become king of the country, etc. Some of those kinds of things are meant to be their own game (mainly being a king, ex. the distant Fable 3).

This really isn't the case anymore. With the PC continuing to move forward, even a budget gaming rig like mine will easily outclass the performance of the PS3. I'm not bashing the PS3. I own one as well and enjoy it. But the consoles are showing their age a little bit. I first noticed this when FO3 first came out. FO3 looked and performed significantly better on the PC then the PS3 or the 360.

The only issue is that while PC performance is steadily increasing, not very many people can actually afford to buy a new one every few months to keep up with "current." That is the main reason why I own a PS3, because I know it will be able to handle most anything I want to play on it (at least into the foreseeable future) and I won't have to worry about replacing or upgrading it.

No need to buy a new one every few months. Just swap out the more important parts (GPU, CPU, RAM) as needed, usually once every few years. If physical format changes or tech surpasses your motherboard, then yeah, you're going to at least have to buy another one of those. But hardware formats are tending to last a lot longer these days. My computer is 3 years old, top of the line when I've bought it. I've upgraded from 2 to 4 GB of RAM, costing me $40, and I'll be switching out the GPU here within another year, probably costing me around $250-$300 for very close to the top of the line, thanks to Nvidia and AMD being in such heavy competition. So for $340 max, I'll be essentially getting a whole new rig that is close to the top of the tech trends, which is about equal or even less to what people pay for brand-new consoles.

 Just sayin'. Of course, I did have to put down the initial investment to get the PC originally, but I bought through a manufacturer, whereas I know enough now to feel comfortable building my own for a fraction of the cost.

What this guy said.

And also compared to even the most basic gaming computers the PS3 and Xbox 360 are ANCIENT. They are using like 6 year old hardware.

TESV is going to be a launch title on a system that will not be released for a few years. Unfortunately, it's going to have amazing graphics whose creation required an amount of work so large that many of us will be left with a taste in our mouth we can only describe as, "This game could have been a lot better if they hadn't worried about making it pretty for the mainstream."

Sadly, this is the most likely thing to happen.

Oh, if only they would just release games for PC and then port them to the 360 instead of the other way around...

SPHERICAL DOME LIGHT

Geeze this is easy, Light from the sky here Bethesda, just a spherical term with some basic, precomputed ambient occlusion that (hopefully) applies to whatever dynamic objects enter said shadows.
Fooling around with the outdoor lighting setting in Fallout 3 and I don't see any of this. Here's a survey of the techniques used: http://www.springerlink.com/content/k22433j132j72668/
