TES horror

"VENGEEEEEAAAAANCE!!!!" pretty much top it off. Then its the sound effect of the foes in Daggerfall. Lastly, the zombie that pop out of no where in the dungeons of Oblivion. Doesn't help that I play with a mod that makes any cave really dark.

TES V: Online... do I really need to say any more?
Well if that's how we're going to play, then Guns in TES!

Even better. Two TES release at the same time, one a MMO, another add guns. Oh goodie. :meh:

I always got creeped out by Morrowind's crypts, all those sounds, whispers, eek. And Ayleid ruins weren't exactly the cosiest places either, especially when the lights go out and you find yourself half way into the dungeon with low mana and no cat's eye amulet/potion...

What scares me the most is sounds. Exploring dungeons and hearing sounds you can't explain.

Monsters arn't scary, they're just some object you have to kill.

Of course you end up learning all the scary sounds and then dungeons don't scare you anymore.

Still, it's sounds and atmosphere that scares me the most... anyone remember shalebridge cradle? from thief 3.

It scares me when the game crashes and I haven't saved for a while.

It's even worse if it crashes again when I go to the same place a second time.

but of the poll options, the only one that ever really scared me was "VENGEEEEEAAAAANCE!!!!"

It's from Daggerfall, I think it was said by some ghost or something, I don't recall whose.

All I know is that I really wasn't prepared for it when I first heard it.

The other night I had a dream that I was playing a TES V: online game with guns. And then I realised... I wasn't playing the game, the computer was! I woke up in a cold sweet.  :ahhh:

The undead don't scare me in TES. I see them more of a magical plague... with Vampirism being the "perfected strand" of the magical disease. I know that's not exactly lore correct, but bah.

What scares me is stuff that humanoids do in game. Like the Anvil Lighthouse cellar for DB. Also, the "sweets" guy in Solsthiem in TES 3. And how Dark Elves will EAT bone meal, or decide to hang out in tombs. Who does that except for vampires?

Dark Elvesssss.

Things from Bethesda Softworks Studios designed games that have scared me:

1. Dunmeri Ancestral Tombs- These things have always given me that creepy feeling that there's something directly behind you, and that feeling multiplies when one stands over an ash circle and those voices come circling around you in Stereophonic horror.

2. Yao Guai in open wasteland- These bastards are the soul reason why I have a follower with me. Sometimes, when I am scrounging my way through the wastelands with a follower in tow, I will get a random message saying that a follower has been killed. Surprised, I turn around and about 10 yards back, I see his/her corpse. Now scared [censored]less (because my followers can generally handle something that attacks them or atleast makes a noise when attacked), I go to take cover behind a rocky outpost, but, as I turn, I am greeted by Yao Guai's claw and face two inches from my own. The first time this happened, I paused the game, left my xbox-live party, set the controller down, gathered my wits, explained to those around me why I just screamed and fell backwards off of my chair, killed the fiend, and then reloaded an earlier save because I liked to keep Charon as he's a surgeon with that shotgun.

3. Most beast sfx in Daggerfall- 'nuff said

4. Entering an interior in Vivec and being half an inch away from an Ordinator upon entry- If this hasn't happened to you in Morrowind, consider yourself lucky. It is possibly one of the few times I have punched a monitor out of fight-or-flight reflex.

5. And (of course) VEAAAAANGAAAANCE!!!

I was hyper scared when the sky darkened and turned red near an Oblivion Gate. Especially when my first ever gate was Kvatch. I don't like corpus beasts or sixth house bases, either. The sixth house bases just have that sort of ambiance... ugh.

I know they aren't really that scary, but I used to think about Ash Zombies too much. You know, the lack of eyes. But on the whole there isn't really much horror in Morrowind, not on the same scale as Fallout or Oblivion at least.

6th House bases in Morrowind were really creepy, even long after my character could pretty well clear them out without breaking a sweat. I still have an image burned into my memory from the first time I entered the Ghostfence and spotted a Corprus Stalker ahead through the driving dust, holding its head and writhing in agony.

The Oblivion's Daedric realms were pretty intimidating for about the first 10-15 minutes; after that it was just too much of the same overdone gore and spikey towers.

But the REAL horror was when Fargoth said "I have a feeling....."

the only monster thats ever scared me in an elderscrolls game that i can recall is a zombie in oblvion. and really only because there kinda quiet and can sneak up on you and all of a sudden you hear a creepy moan from nowhere and bam theres a zombie right behind you.

The mudcrab merchant in Morrowind is a strange ol fellow, where does he get all that money from? I think hes up to no good. Anyway, I have never actually been frightened when playing an ES game, but I think the closest I've ever come to it was seeing Lucien Lachances dead body hanging upside down, while hes surrounded by the cloaked DB members.

This does it, I'm sick of seeing options in polls that I can't vote for, and not being sure what is so good about it, having never played the game. I'm now buying Morrowind on Steam at the next opportunity.
Anyway, I didn't find Oblivion to be very scary, partly because when I first played the game, I had a portable music warning system that played a loud fanfare everytime a mudcrab/enemy was somewhere in the vicnity of 500 meters. It probably doesn't help that there is a zombie in every Ayleid ruin in the game When I was watching a friend play it years ago, before I tried the game, I thought it looked quite scary. He was in a lower level of Vilverin, and all these skeletons were suddenly pouring out. At another point, there was a dread zombie that he was hiding from, that at the time seemed invincible, because it kept regenerating. I soon discovered that there were just as many zombies, ghosts and skeletons as there are citizens of Cyrodiil, which removed all mystery and scaryness about it. You should be able to go into a ruin, and suddenly be scared by some hideous creature that you weren't expecting. Sadly, when you go through every door in an Ayleid ruin, you expect to see a zombie or skeleton, and you always do. That being said, the Flesh Atronachs and Skinned Hounds could be pretty scary at times in the SI, so I voted others.
