There is actually a pretty simple solution to this. Make it so that there are essential NPC's who can't die... but make it so that they can die by the PC's hands.

So that way, they won't die on the road, they'll just fight the guards until the problem is solved or they get knocked down(unconscious), but as soon as you start hacking, they will die.

Adds to the realism a bit so that you can kill a town, but makes it so that you won't have to restart after 10 hours because some quest giver far away died by a mudcrab.

I like this idea. How difficult would it be to implement? Has anyone attempted to make a mod that does this?

Well for the child NPC mod I made, all the NPCs I added were non killable, but I left the vanilla ones I changed in thier vanilla setting. Then I got complaints from both sides, so you cant make everyone happy. I even got complaints from people who didnt even play Oblivion who were just trollling the TESNexus.

I am no programmer, but something like this?

Essential check
If yes, determine damage source
If source = NPC, damage = 0
(formula) + damage negated -> damage negated
If source = PC, damage = (formula)

If no, damage = (formula)


Any way to stop players from abusing essential characters? Like...
If damage negated reaches a certain threshold then a blackout or flee mode goes into effect. Possibly leading to failed or re-started quests.
