TES "lore in a minute"

Post » Mon May 06, 2013 8:45 am

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=kw9_M8w-N1c made me facepalm. There are so many inaccuracies, and a true coverage of TES lore would probably take days. I know that it was partially meant to be funny, but the title as well as the fact that it was done in a series of videos explaining the lore of other games makes it seem like they were actually trying to explain TES lore.

Also, "the elder scrolls themselves aren't actually significant" my [AYEM].

Well it seemed more like a joke. If he had titled it something other than TES lore in a minute it might have been more amusing.

It's a bit of a missnomer (since it's gameplay summaries, rather than lore), but I don't really see anything to facepalm at. It's meant to be humorous.

I'm going to have to go with Albino and N on the joke part, but yea it's more of the gameplay lore rather then the whole collective knowledge of TES lore which would take days to explain since a lot of it is theories and accounting for why some things contradict each other also on the point of the Elder Scrolls I think it's more of the person saying they aren't significant to the main-quests (except for Skyrim) or any of the other major events in Tamriel.

There's lore and lore, since we're digging up old videos. This is basically a series recap to prep for Skyrim since- as has been said here- actually recapping TES lore would take a long long time. It's also voiced by Jesse Cox who loves the series and I met briefly in a TES context (PAX party). I wouldn't take it too seriously.

Except it isn't that funny. I have no real issue with it, but yeah, not really funny.

Ya....

None of it was even lore.

This was just story recaps. Most people do think that is lore though. So when I say I'm worried about TESO breaking lore and people respond: "the history wasn't well fleshed out in the 2nd Era" I face palm. Its not "history" that I'm talking about.

Up until TES V they barely were. They were involved in one sidequest in Oblivion, and very late into it.

The games are Elder Scrolls. The games are about Events and the Heroes that make them happen, and the Elder Scrolls record the possibilities around those Events and Heroes.

That's pretty meta stuff though, isn't it? From the POV of the average player that's not gonna register.

I mean yeah, you could argue prophecies were mentioned earlier. Pretty much from Arena onward, but the references to prophecies being specifically associated with the Scrolls are buried deeper. It may not register to a Morrowind player that the Emperor had an Elder Scroll read that told him about the Nerevarine, for instance. The game gives you an opportunity to read about that but it's not critical to the main quest to absorb that information.

What changed in Oblivion and Skyrim is that quests specifically revolving around the actual Scrolls were added. We can hold them in our hands and look at them. That's new.

But just because players might miss it doesn't mean it isn't important. The lore of TES is pretty meta all around. I am actually not really a fan of the quests in skyrim involving the scrolls so much. I liked them being a bit more mysterious.

Generally I thought the video was pretty awful. The jokes are just pop-culture references (Transformers! Wacky, am I right? ARROW IN THE KNEE!) and the "lore" they give is just a hole filled recap of the main quests of the games. It is kind of what I imagine the lore to be in the mind of someone who has read the wikipedia articles on the games and not much else.

Not the first Lore in a Minute video I saw, so the pop culture humor was expected. I kinda like how they (Lore in a minute author/s) have been doing it. Very lighthearted jab at how the problem began, right before the player jumps into the picture. Which is why every video ends with "Have fun!" In a haha-svcks-to-be-you kind of way

Unfortunately, all the other Lore in a Minute vids usually covered background mythologies. But here, it was xactly what was already said above; just a recap of the TES series. I thought it was going to be the old Lorkhan story with monkeytruths in stride. Oh well.

Anyone want to do their own lore in a minute video? I think it would have to be confined to single words though.

Nothing. Pseudo-Dream. Change. Stasis. Disparity. Propagation. Convention. Conflict. Subgradience. Conflict, conflict, conflict, ideas, conflict, ideas, conflict, bad ideas, conflict, war, conflict, war, ideas.....etc etc etc.

All words in brackets, no less, for the lack of English-equivalent translations. Haha, and some quasi-Latin pseudo-Babylon

I don't think anyone is raging. This video is pretty silly and not worth getting worked up about.

To answer your question though, lore is soooooooooooooo much more than just history. Its metaphysics. Its philosophy. Its religion. Debates about the nature of the universe, the nature of the gods, the act of creation, the ultimate goal of life on Nirn, ect. All of this is lore and this is what I'm really concerned with preserving.

I could care less if the first Aldemri Dominion was formed in 2E 582 or 2E 830. I care much more about preserving the strange culture and unyielding belief system of the Altmer. The first one is history. The second one is lore but not history.

I'll hook you up in thirty seconds:

I actually watched through all of their Lore in a Minute videos. Pretty funny stuff. And best of all I didn't even realize so much time had passed...

Also pretty sure these videos aren't meant to be taken seriously.

It's a very quick series recap, that isn't meant to be taken as a thorough investigation into the backstory so much as a "Watch this and you won't be -completely- confused if you jump in late".

It's not really a joke as some folk are saying, but that one is particularly jokey in it's nature, but I suspect that's just because it's Jesse Cox, I find it hard to imagine he can do anything entirely seriously.

I'm pretty sure if he tried he's just turn gradually more and more red-faced until he just started shouting innuendos at the top of his lungs followed by "wink."

Love that guy.

Don't feel like doing a recording but how about TES lore in a sentence?

"Eastern religion and philosophy twisted and beaten by insane-Crowley philosophy that will [VEHK] with your head for the rest of your life."
