As many of you know, there is a rather extensive list of mods on the CS Wiki of mods that need to be cleaned, are already clean, or should not be clean. In order to make this information more accessible and easier to discuss, I have decided to post the lists here, as well. Note that this is only a list, not the actual guide. If you don't know how to clean your mods, follow the link below.

Special Cleaning Instructions:


300_White Stallion 4.esp


Requires custom TES4Edit work to fix errors or it can’t be saved. It's too complicated to list here, but it has to do with editing REFR:00092EC9 so that it uses the Upper version of the door and moving the door into the correct position. Copy the coordinates from REFR:020014BE then delete REFR:020014BE. This also applies to the renamed Feudal Empire version.

While we're talking about White Stallion/Feudal Empire, this mod also has a LOT of errors in the AI Packages. They currently have no faction assignments and need to be updated. You can open the mod in the Construction Set and go to AI Packages and find all the ones with null parameters. Change those to have the following two conditions:

Target no, GetFactionRank, LeyawiinFaction, >=, 0.00 AND Target no, GetFactionRank, KnightsWhiteStallion, >=, 0.00

If that is too much for you, you may be better off not using this mod.


Artefacts of the Ancestors.esp

This mod contains two cells that share the same FormID (DELETEDHdADungeon and DELETEDHdAHaus, with FormID XX000CE8). This will cause TES4Edit to error when you attempt to open the plugin to clean it. There are two methods to correct this:

1. Open the plugin in the Construction Set with Construction Set Extender installed and give one of the cells a new FormID. This is not recommended unless you are a highly experienced modder, though.

2. Use http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2114 to remove one of the duplicated cells. Instructions follow:

Once, you have opened the plugin in TESSnip, locate the CELL records DELETEDHdADungeon and DELETEDHdAHaus (Fifth GRUP bunch down in the CELL GRUP, first Sub-Group). As you will be able to tell, these cells have identical FormIDs, and at least one of them needs to go. Given the prefix of the Forms, it is very likely that neither was ever meant to be seen in game, but this is something that really cannot be told at a cursory glance. Anyways, deleting at least one of these cells will fix the error.

This will allow you to edit the plugin in TES4Edit and clean things up.

Might as well add Oblivion XP.esp to the clean list. It's actually just a set of quests and scripts, so it doesn't touch anything vanilla, but it's confirmation for those that don't know that. I did run it through the cleaning process and it's fine.

Ok i am in the process of re-installing OB due to a stupid mistake of mine with deleting the wrong exe file and just now i tested TalosBridgeGateHouse.esp with TES4Edit and got this result:

[Removing "Identical to Master" records done] Processed Records: 1790 Removed Records: 15 Elapsed Time: 00:00
[Undeleting and Disabling References done] Processed Records: 1775 Undeleted Records: 31 Elapsed Time: 00:00


I did not save the changes for the moment because i am not sure if it is save to do so with this mod yet. Does any one know if this mod can be safely cleaned?

Yes, but it's not an 'official' update in that you don't download it from the VHB download page, but somewhere else. Hence people are more likely to have the old, unclean version.

Yes, that's true, ninja, thanks. But it is still a 'clean' version. Perhaps a little note in the list to distinguish this before people waste time cleaning his version? Especially, as he points out, the version number of the file is still the same.
Not a big deal, it would just be helpful.

I just tried to fast travel to the chestnut stables outside the IC where the Talos bridge begins, and the result was instant CTD. The most likely culprit was TalosBridgeGateHouse.esp, so i copied and renamed the TES4edit backup file of TalosBridgeGateHouse.esp and replaced the edited version with the original and there where no more CTD's.

So now we know that TalosBridgeGateHouse.esp should not be cleaned. :blush:

That is still good to know i guess.

Not necessarily true - I cleaned Talos Bridge and haven't had any issues with fast travel or walking into the area.

Keep in mind that a lot of crashes are random and have no identifiable cause. I've been through plenty of instances where things like that happen and even when removing a suspect mod entirely the problem still comes back later.

Just to second what Arthmoor said, a single CTD is not sufficient evidence of a problem with a specific mod. Many CTDs are just because of resource issues, or during transition between areas like going through a door when cells are being loaded and unloaded. These are just random and can't typically be reproduced - just part of playing Oblivion. :)

That said, consistent CTDs in the same location or when doing the same thing are another matter and require more direct debugging.

Must be from an old version. The copy from UOPS 3.3.5 is clean.

Same with AN-RL, 1.1 had some UDR's slip by but 1.3 is clean.

I'd be a bit careful of the first statement. I run Bartholm v6.97 on my secondary computer's Oblivion installation. My primary computer's Oblivion install includes Bartholm v7. If nothing else, their esps are different sizes, v7 being larger. There was, at minimum, one later v6 variant, v6.98. That might or might not have been identical to v7. I didn't keep that one so can't check file size.

Why didn't I keep v6.98 or upgrade my secondary computer to v7? v6.97 was the last version of Bartholm I could update to without having to do a "clean save" and begin the mod afresh. The game wouldn't launch after updating to v6.98. Being unwilling to start over again, I left v6.97 in place where it remains today. When I assembled my current primary computer mid-2010 I graced it with a new Oblivion install and a new play-through containing, amongst other things, Bartholm v7.

Whether my inability to update from v6.97 to v6.98 without a "clean install" is commonplace or unique to my particular situation I do not know. I see no other reason to stick with v6.

So yes, there are reasons someone might want to stick with a v6 variant. And yes, v6 needs cleaning too.

Hm, that was my mistake. I fixed so many things in it last year that I assumed I also did the normal TES4Edit cleaning job. Version BETA 3 (which should be clean) is now up at both TESNexus and TESA. Could someone check it out for me?

As for the other things I reported, yes it seems I now need to go on an update spree while avoiding the lecture I know Arthmoor is dying to give. For Bartholm, there was something about v7 I didn't want so I didn't upgrade, others may feel the same and not know so I reported it.
