[RELz/BETA] TES4LODGen

Post » Thu May 12, 2011 11:55 am

The only thing that really annoys me is how that 6 rating is going to drop my rating.

Yeah, that svcks.

But, it inspired me to post a more realistic rating, so that's some consolation I guess.

Might be worth adding something simple to the description like:

Revert
===========
TES4LODGen creates files in the Data/DistantLOD folder. If you don't like the results and want to revert to vanilla DistantLOD, simply delete the Data/DistantLOD folder.

Rating reported, since the rating has next to nothing to do with the utility and almost everything to do with user incompetence.

Arthmoor, you might want to have a look at the latest user comment on TESNexus. Maybe RAEVWD shouldn't be allowed to be used by people with IQ under room temperature?

Heh. Wow. That's about as classic as it gets. Especially the "for some strange reason" part. :)

*snicker* It gets even better. Bags on your utility, while also slipping in a mention about how RAEVWD "ruined his game" and then turns around and rates me a 10 on the RAEVWD listing while making another backhanded comment about how tes4lodgen "had some serious problems".

I saw that too; pure insanty as both TES4LODGen & RAEVWD are great. I checked out RAEVWD myself a bit back and loved it, but I was still sorting out some performance issues (simply trying to run too much at once. lol). I plan on putting it back in once I find that "happy middle" again (I think I may already have, actually, for the most part). :D Great work, both of you; that other guy doesn't know what he is talking about.

Again apologies.

Myself I didn't take it as a fault that needed to be pointed out or derided.

I thought it was just a new set of problems that were appearing when combining BSA with loose files in that manner.

Sorry Arthmoor - peace brother - thought I was just trying to spread light and info not misinfo or disinfo.

For all concerned - Yeah I push (sometimes punish) my load order - RAEVWD works as advertised.

Take you Dark Imperial City textures, copy them all to the "Data\Textures\lowres\Architecture\Imperialcity" and you wont get any problem. I hinted that but you seems to not have understood how simple that was. If you don't want to load textures so large for the little _far nif meshes, reduce the size of the dds in your "Data\Textures\lowres\Architecture\Imperialcity" to half their current size. Or not... Anyway just having the texture there will guaranty you have you darket texture for the Imperial City on LOD.

Just out of curiosity--

I messed with TES4LODGen (wow, that's a lot of caps >_<) a while back and found the game developed a nasty penchant for crashing whenever I entered a world cell. Now, I *assume* this might be memory-related, as I have *lots* of mods going at once, (and ProcMon shows Oblivion's memory usage approaching 2GB, which is the default limit for application virtual address space on 32-bit Windows; I'm loath to goof with it) but are there any other possible causes? I'm all for painless consolidation, but I'll take playability over nice distant LOD any day. I don't think it's load-order related or anything, as the game runs (more or less) fine without said LOD adjustments. You mention using the tool with many of the same mods (UL, various VWD packs) and yet don't experience issues. What specs are you running on?

Thanks Ismelda

question though - how does one reduce texture size?

Is that like a graphics rendering tool or something?

That depends on what you used for LOD mods. If one of the _far.nif files was corrupt, it would manifest itself as you describe. Crashing trying to enter a world cell. Early versions of RAEVWD for example has this issue due to one of the Leyawiin meshes being corrupted.

As for my specs, I'll just copy my Nexus profile info:

Processor: AMD Phenom 9850 Quad core
Memory: 4GB Corsair Dominator
Motherboard: MSI KA92 Platinum
Graphics card: AMD Radeon HD4870 1GB
Sound card: Sound Blaster X-Fi
Monitor size: 19

question though - how does one reduce texture size?

Is that like a graphics rendering tool or something?

Try grabbing a copy of PAINT.NET. It's simple and quick and you can resize images and generate the needed mipmaps along with it. Just be sure when you do that you also use it to adjust the normal maps to match.

First, make sure that you are using http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=936004 otherwise you might have _far.nif's hanging around from other mods which are not optimized for poly count and which use full sized textures.

I'm running a Phenom 4X 2.5GHz, 8GB, Windows 2008 Enterprise 32bit and 2x 8800GT 1GB (non-SLI, got 4 displays connected).

So I just downloaded Paint.net.

it seems similar to most graphic editing I've seen (mostly corel - but I don't have corel right now).

How to resize is not jumping out at me - with corel it would have been save as then the choice of file size is an option. Not with this.

Or am I thinking that wrong - is there an editing I need to do to the image - not just change file size.

Brumbeck??

thanks

Image menu->resize->choose the new size. Usually not much else involved in that. When you go to save there should be an option to generate mipmaps, which you want it to do.

OK - Just change resolution right? not height/width of pixels?

Or do I do by percentage?

any suggested size? what do you use with RAEVWD?

Can I just use the normal maps from the RAEVWD Darker Regal IC?

Resolution *IS* the height/width in pixels.

I don't even know what it is you're trying to downsize for one. If it's that LOD texture for the IC stuff it doesn't need to be reduced, it's already reduced.

OH sorry - Ismelda recommended that I import the Darker IC textures: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9195 which only have files for the textures folder.

She stated that in order to get consistent LOD darker IC that I'd need to import those same textures into the lowres folder and for better performance I'd need to reduce them in size.

hence my questions.

The Darker IC textures have already been reduced for RAEVWD thanks to Brumbek and his texture pack of goodness.

Nope - only darker regal IC has been reduced, not regular darker imperial city (see above link).

I'll compare sizes included in RAEVWD and then test a few to see if I can approximate.

Either way, the files you're looking to replace are reduced LOD files already. Bethesda's stock files didn't need to be messed with in order to bring them down. Which is why you got that Star Wars look - someone reduced them again when they didn't need to.

Wait ... I thought the idea was reduce the textures from Darker IC, not the vanilla or BC ones.

No?

I'm confused (again).

Yes, you'll want to reduce those. Just don't reduce anything with "LOD" in the name as those are already reduced.

I misread (and still wrote) Darker IC instead of Darker Regal IC, which is what I was thinking. Sorry Psymon.

Ok - yeah I get what your saying.

confusing this kind of communication can get.

So ... ... any recommendations on how much to reduce them? And again - I'm seeking to reduce the resolution? or what?

Then I can use the normal maps from the Darker Regal IC stuff in RAEVWD.

thanks Arthmoor.

Non problem there xXAequitasXx

Yes. Reduce the resolution. How much depends on how large they are to begin with. 256x256 is probably as large as you want to go, and if the texture is already that size or smaller, don't bother. Move on to the next.

As far as being able to use the normal maps, I don't know. That's not something I know much about.

I think I'm doing something wrong here, but the game always CTD when I generate the LOD. I'm using this in combination with RAEVWD v1.4. I've installed RAEVWD and clicked the tes4lodgen button so it generates the LOD files. When I reload my save, the game just CTD. My game works again if I delete the DistantLOD folder but I really would like this to work:) Any thought on this problem of mine?

Kind regards, Quintus
