TES5 rating: blood and boobs

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:22 am

Of course xbox screams mainstream, that's the point.

I like how you say "imo" now, when originally, your point was that E10 rated games sell the best.

You've gone from "TES should do what sells the best" to "TES shouldn't follow the mainstream, in my opinion." (which, I personally agree with, actually).

That was a delicious red herring, sir, but I must say you're still wrong because E10 games don't sell the best, no matter what you decide to change your argument to, after the fact.

Sorry about double post, but he changed his view because i helped show him how most E10 games are crap :P He is now a convert of M Games Rule :P lol

I think the women in the taverns were prosttutes. And there was male nudity in Daggerfall, too.

And the time and place that the TES games represent just has a drastically different view of nudity. If you've noticed, the extent of nudity is nipbles. There is no genitalia in that game except for on the male flesh atronachs and the female nymphs, and the player characters have a Ken-stump.

Here's a funny story I heard from an anthropology professor that might put things into perspective:

He knew a female anthropologist who was living among a tribe in South America, to study them. All the members of the tribe, male and female, walk around topless. So, in order to fit in, she felt she had to be topless, also. After changing, she came out of the hut and all the other females gave her this disgusted look and all the men stared at her, hungrily.

Here's what happened:

No one cared that she was topless, but her skirt only came down to her knees, and in that particular culture, the calf muscle is the naughty part. It all depends on the culture how nudity is viewed.

My point is that if you're going to model the culture of your game world after the classical era, but all women in your game world are too self-conscious to be topless in public... that's unrealistic. Because people in the classical era didn't really view nipbles as a private part. Likewise, I don't think a flesh atronach, on the run from the Mages Guild, would take the time to stop and find a pair of pants that fit.

OK, I haven't had the time to go through the whole thread, but I just want to add my two septims anyway;

As I have said before, as long as it is done tastefully, gore and implied advlt themes are more then ok. I actually want that. I also want gray morals, politics, intrigue, murder and desception to have a place in the game. I have no problem with showing skin, I'm a Swede after all, we see that on TV quite often anyway, but going the "OMG BOOBIES" rout... just... no.

It will probably get an M rating anyway, and as long as it is done in an believable and tasteful way... Go for it. Drugs, prostitution, executions, violence, advlt relations...

yay :twirl:

Funny how fewer FPS there are on the PC. I shudder to think that someone at Bethesda would look at this list and make any decisions about TES5.

A lot of people choosing gore over sixual themes here.

Because it's OK to kill people, but six is messed up.

With some of the posts here, I'm surprised the human race hasn't gone extinct from people torturing and murdering each other, and then finding creating new life disgusting.

HAHAHAHA I love you man.

people like have their kids watching TV and there are explosions and people getting shot and fire and babies dying and they are like "OHHH sound like a good movie"

and if people make out on TV its like "OMG TV CORRUPTING MY INNOCENT CHILDREN OMGGGGG HELPPPP"

I personally think that, a lot of the time, random sixuality in video games cheapens the games. You also have to consider that, for some strange reason, sixuality is a LOT more taboo than blood and gore. Including sixuality in the game would only harm sales. Sure, six sells, but the internet is here now. Seriously, every racy scene in a video game can be found with a quick Google. Nobody is going to be a video game ONLY for the six when you can see the six online for free. A lot of fringe TES fans who are still minor dependents may not buy the game on account of the effect of society's taboos on parental censorship, thus hurting sales. In summary, I feel unnecessary sixuality in a video game is a cheap, exploitative tactic that rarely works anymore anyway.

Well than luckily nobody is on here suggesting that they add six as some sort of way to "sell" the game. There are places in the games that could benefit with nudity, how could adding it possibly "cheapen" it? I don't really understand. The only thing that's cheapening the experience is people trying to have Bethesda focus on some stupid rating system built up by people who are afraid of their own bodies rather than have Bethesda focus on their art.

To be fair, it sounds dreary in any type of game.

What if the game was based around six, nudity and relationships? but it might just be a dreary game.

Sorry but, with that type of arguement, and your inability to realize that some people think six/nudity in video games cheapens the experience, it's kind of hard not to see that it's YOU who wants six/nudity in video games, not Bethesda. They haven't in any recent games. If they wanted too, they could. You're the one complaining, not them. So don't say Bethesda "wants to express themselves", you want to "express" yourself.

No, not really, sorry. If Bethesda doesn't want it that's fine, I don't care. It was a suggestion, not a complaint. The only complaint is that people focus way too much on ratings.

I just don't see the point of insisting that the Dibella priestesses be topless or that prosttutes be naked to 'enhance the realism.' If they go with temples rather than chapels (a la Oblivion) it wouldn't take anything away from the game for me if the priestesses were wearing some kind of robe or if the prosttutes said something racy to prove that they were prosttutes. Also, on the realism front, if Tes5 is in Skyrim, it might be a very cold place and all the priestesses and prosttutes would be very cold. I can't really think of a situation in the game where nudity is absolutely required or the game is lessened. The spriggans had leaves covering their bits and I was fine with that. If there has to be a love scene, given the quality of Bethesda's animations, they might be better served by a fade to black love scene than by having their character models act it out.
six vs. gore has always been the argument. What's worse? Saw 1-5 or Star [censored]s? I think Beth should shoot for realism and (as far as six and gore are concerned) a T rating. If there are quests that use language or themes to bring it up to an M rating then that would fine. An example would be a trip to some Prince's realm where there are people being tortured. I don't need or want to see people exploding, but if they're hanging on a rack or screaming it would suit the scene. I always wondered why the people in the cages in Oblivion looked just like the people drinking in the bar. I know that Beth didn't bother making bruises or dirty people, but they should have screamed when they fell to the bottom of the tower.
I guess no one faults a game for being violent or bloody. On the other hand, I mentioned to someone that I had picked up a copy of Mass Effect and the first thing they said was "Oh, there's a love scene in that.' i hope that tes never gets known as 'a game with love scenes' rather than ' a deep and involving open world game in a unique and finely crafted fantasy realm.'

What about a strip club or a bath house? And berserkers are nvde.

And how do you have a temple that honors the human body if all the bodies are covered up? It doesn't bother you because you don't know much about the time or the culture. But for someone who understands that other cultures don't hold the same beliefs and taboos as the western world of the year 2010, it really stands out to me.

You can't say it definitively makes no difference just because it makes no difference to you, personally. Because, from reading this thread, I've noticed that a lot of people find the experience cheapened when the game developer overtly tiptoes around advlt themes.

I personally believe that if someone feels that nudity always cheapens the experience, it's probably because that person is a little less mature and less comfortable with seeing nudity than the targeted audience of these games, which is advlts (so I'm led to believe).

Nudity only cheapens the experience for mature, experienced advlts when it's overtly pormographic. If it's tasteful and appropriate to include nudity, then the absence of nudity cheapens the experience.

EDIT: What I'm saying is that if a person has never seen anyone naked besides them-self, then, obviously and understandably, they will be a little uncomfortable if made to look at nudity (even cartoon nudity). If the game is for a younger audience, then Bethesda certainly should keep that in mind and accommodate.

However, if they're going to get an 'M' anyway, or if they're more interested in simply making a fun interesting world and story, then it would be a big mistake to tiptoe around nudity, entirely.

No, I can say that it makes no difference to me, because it doesn't. For that matter, I don't need a strip club either. There might be a brothel. A bath house I could actually see in Skyrim - some mountain hot spring. It would make for a good Dark Brotherhood quest to go and kill some rich merchant or something. That is a situation where I would expect to see nudity. But as I said, it wouldn't matter to me if everyone wore towels or loin cloths. In any case, the modders would take care of it for those who would prefer the nudity. I guess they could put clothes on people too, but there aren't too many mods that remove nudity from the game...

Which berserkers are you talking about. I haven't played DF or Arena and the only Berserkers I could find in the wikis are the Goblin berserkers.

Nord berserkers are modeled after celtic berserkers and therefore attack their enemies in the nvde.

And my point is that just because it makes no difference to you doesn't mean it makes no difference to everyone. It make a HUGE difference to people who understand the time. I LOVE TES for its allusions to the classical era and I thought the overt fear of nudity in the world culture of Oblivion and even Morrowind made the game-world less immersive and more contrived and artificial.

You're not the only person in the world, so, "it doesn't bother me." means nothing. Absolutely nothing. A world with no strip clubs and where everyone wears their underwear in the tub is an obviously artificial world. Overtly excluding something that is found in every culture is very jarring to most people, so it makes a difference in the long run. Especially when you compare it to past games, that weren't so atrociously shy.

EDIT: And why would they take the extra trouble to strategically cover up everyone's nudity in a bath house for any reason other than to spare players from having to witness it? It's that overt tiptoeing around nudity that turns people off. Covering nudity simply to spare people is just as immature and juvenile as including nudity just to include it because you're making a big deal out of nudity when nudity just is not a big deal at all for the time and place.

Dude if your refering to me I dont care about the rating I was suggesting heck ill still buy it if it was rated AO in a good way not a Bad manhunt way bought the AO version and it was worth 80 bucks just too see nuts being tweeze ahhh Now that's a good buy and in they gay ngiht club I can see those dudes junk

but off topic if they do it tastefully boobs and maybe violence iI wouldnt care I will Buy even if ti get's an AO rating which is highly unlikely I was suggesting they branch to a wider audience no point know since 98.6% of the forum disagree I admit most of you wont buy but an AO most of you won't be able to get normally unless you have steam(steam is awesome get it!)

Nudity only cheapens the experience for mature, experienced advlts when it's overtly pormographic. If it's tasteful and appropriate to include nudity, then the absence of nudity cheapens the experience.

If this is being directed at me in any way, I would like to point out I never said it cheapened it all the time. I was specifically talking about completely unnecessary, exploitative, pormographic nudity (God of War III). It's not that I have a problem with that stuff, anyways. There is a difference between something being cheapened and something being uncomfortable. You also have to understand I was speaking from a sales standpoint. Even if nudity would improve the game somehow, I still think they should avoid it. Many parents don't just see an "M" rating and then automatically disqualify it as a game their child can play. Many of them actually look at the reasons why it's rated M and then decide. And as I have said before, for some reason blood and gore is less taboo than six and nudity, so more parents would be less inclined to let their children play a game that has nudity in it than a game that has blood and gore in it.

However, if they're going to get an 'M' anyway, or if they're more interested in simply making a fun interesting world and story, then it would be a big mistake to tiptoe around nudity, entirely.

I don't quite understand your logic here. Explain it, please. I may just be misreading, but I'd think the conventional argument would be "If they are getting an M anyways, they should put all the nudity they want in," rather than the other way around.

So does it make a big jarring difference to you that there are no toilettes in TES? Or children? Or any form of agricultural society capable of sustaining a city? I don't know, maybe I just don't understand the time...

And wait, I thought the Classical Era took place in the Mediterranean during like 300 BC - 300 AD give or take a few centuries. I always thought of TES being more based off the medieval era.

I WANT to see nudity and six and sixual stories/stuff in the game, of course with good game play as well, because I really want the game to be great, and nudity to be just a "secondary" thing in it, and since nudity is a "natural" thing for us advlts to deal with, as well as "six" I really don't care what the under aged populace might think IF the game is M rated.

I do realize now that that forums are 13+ so I will refrain from any "intense" language :P
