You know, it's a bit odd that I can't find iShadowMapResolution in my Oblivion ini. I have the latest patch and everything.

Hi Tomlong, I hope all is well

I've just installed all of the OMOD's and now want to use BOSS & Wrye Bash for LO & the bashed patch. I just have a few questions I was hoping you could help me with please:

1)Now when I run BOSS (via wrye bash shortcut) are all of the bash tags it suggests automatically imported? Do I need to do anything with the bash tags? (I noticed when you right click on a tag it says automatic at the top).

Also in Wrye Bash under mods in the left hand window:

2) I have a few red check boxes next to mods; what does this mean?

3) I have only blue (.esm's), green (don't check) and ordinary text; I have no purple or italics. Is that right?

4)So assuming I don't need to do anything with the bash tags, do I check all of the mods apart from green text and then right click bashed patch > rebuild patch? > run TES4LODGen (via wrye bash shortcut).

5)Do I then move onto "first run guide"?

1) You do not need to do anything. Bash automatically imports BOSS' tags (with the default, 'automatic', set.)

2) Those are either filter mods (if they have the relevant tag) or you are missing masters. The latter is bad, haha, so check the tags. If you are missing masters on a non-filter plugin, check the plugin's master list (second frame from the bottom, on the right.)

3) That is normal. It is possible to just have blue (ESMs) and black ("non-Bash-able" plugins.)

4) Yes.

5) Yes.

All of them are marked "filter" in bash tags apart from "Gates to the Aesgaard 2 Delayer.esp". You may remember we discussed turning Gates to the Aesgaard.exe into an OMOD, I consulted the readme which said I could pack it into an OMOD. Unfortunately Gates of the Aesgaard 1 & 2.exe's have been put into the data folder and not executed; essentially screwing up my install order. Can I just run the exe's & then run BOSS again or would this mess with anything?

I have rebuilt the bashed patch & now want to go through activating esm's/esp's while saving after each as described in your "First Run Guide". I was just wondering do I activate all the related ones in one "save & quit" for example:
After activating Oblivion.esm then running oblivion then saving & quit (the same for Jog_X_Mod.esm). Next we get to activate All Natural Base.esm; now do I also check All Natural - Real Lights.esp, All Natural.esp, All Natural - SI.esp, All Natural - EW + NW + AWS.esp all at the same time in one "save & quit"?. Then the same for OOO, MMM, Cobl etc? & at what point should the bashed patch be activated?

Ah any information of updated ways to make oblivion run better is more than welcome, Ill mark this for future references Thank you
BTW I have a pack with the meshes already optimized by PyFFI, this was done a modder who only did the vanilla arquitecture and wilderness, he did it on fast pc so it took much less time than when I tried to do it myself would those interest anyone here?

If they are the actual NIF files, they can't be distributed unfortunately. Copyrights and all that fun stuff. There is a pack of patches somewhere on the Nexus that still takes less time than Pyffi'ing it yourself though.

Any obvious misconfigs? I'd greatly appreciate some help. I uninstalled all the quest mods so far, they don't seem to be the problem...

I also have another question. Is there a way to see the last notification message (upper left corner of screen) again? I mean the ones that say e.g. "Streamline initialized", "You succussfully harvested ..." and so on.

Also then is there a problem with foreign language file names (ie things like those found in B&M or Ivellon, etc).

In General, mods should come with meshes already pyffied. Don't worry about the big overhauls, I think CorePC and others already made pyffi meshes.

About the quote, it's a command you pass inside the terminal, or Windows "Command line". Vorians is recommending using only the defined terms to pyffi *_far.nif files. It literally means "use python (python.exe) to run niftoaster (the niftoaster.py python script) with these options only (fix_deltangentspace) on the folder Meshes".

The folder meshes, in this case, is the folder you keep the *_far.nif's. This also means you have to organize your folders to separate these files.

The way I understand it, it goes something like this (correct if I'm wrong): backup *_far.nif files according to the folder structure they're in (place a copy of them in some folder, for example "_far meshes"). Run a regular pyffi pass on the entire meshes folder (proceed as suggested on the site). Make the pyffi pass on the "_far meshes" folder with Vorians suggested settings. Overwrite base mesh folder with the custom optimized files inside "_far meshes"

As for the OBMM time stamp utility, I think it redates all the BSA's to emulate something like ArchiveInvalidationInvalidated!.bsa. I only used it once in the past so I don't remember if it had more repercussions.
With a simple file redater, you are making sure nothing else is touched besides the file you are working on..

I'd recommend http://no-nonsense-software.com/freeware/

(edit:) After you pack the pyffi'ed meshes inta a bsa, change the "modified" date to the same date as the original (Oblivion - Meshes.bsa, for example, is 29 Jan 2006, 22:53:40).

Well, yes, it's a command shell command (pass the redundancy:D )

It's also the simplest way to choose the options (or arguments) you want the program to run (niftoaster python script) since there isn't a version of PyFFi with an user interface.

(On a side note, since there aren't point and click windows, menus and options it can be more difficult to understand "what does the program do, anyway?" without looking at the niftoaster documentation first).

BTW, I'm on windows 7. I didn't refer to the command line as something like "run a DOS command" because DOS was an old operating system, no longer in use. But if that rings a bell, basically, running a program in the command line can be thought of going back to old times.

Even though my first computer didn't even have a mouse (first apple home computers) and I dropped out of computer science in favor of psychology - I'm still a bit slow with computers at times.

I remember DOS very well and was under the impression even windows OS sat on top of a DOS like system (more redundancy for ya).

So then I can just copy paste that into the cmd prompt and then run the PyFFI like normal and it will optimize far nifs?

OK no sorry that isn't clear.

I need a blow by blow ... and really why that isn't on the main post is beyond me.

Like:
1. open cmd prompt
2. Copy entire text into cmd prompt making sure what matches what?
... which folder? I'm using the in and out folder of method "Run PyFFI" Steps ... then in the cmd shell I would need to change what in the code box? Neither address seems to be about the location of where the PyFFIing is done.

... is it just that I need to change the file path to match where I have Python installed (very close anyway). Your comment "just make sure you point to the correct folder directory you want to run PyFFi optimization" confuses me.

Sorry to be so thick. I'm sure this is probably explained in great detail in some arcane nook of one of these threads. Certainly it does not seem to be where it would be needed most: in the instructions of the first post.

You told Python to run niftoaster with fix_deltangentspace on the folder "C:\Users\XXXXX\meshes".

If this is the folder where you have the copies of the *_far.nif files, then it's all good.

After you run the PyFFi procedure on the main meshes folder (the one which includes all other meshes) all you have to do is to copy-paste the custom optimized *_far.nif in it (so you get the ones with the correct optimization suggested by Vorians, and not the generic optimization that is applied to all other meshes).

NO that is not where the far nifs are my tired brain thought that is where the niftoaster.py is at.

I thought the instructions were to alter that script.

errr ... :brokencomputer: ... well I guess I'm running this thing again tonight as I don't feel like fishing through all the folders to find the far nifs. damn

[edit] so then if there is far nifs in more than one folder (such as various architecture folders) then would I need to perform that cmd prompt several times - that seems cumbersome. Can't I just point it to the in folder of the PyFFI structure?

I wouldn't worry about the custom optimization on the *_far.nifs because, as I understand it, it is an extra optimization. Just apply the normal suggestions in the website and you're good to go.

Well I don't mind running it again I just need to know if I need to run that cmd at each folder or can I just target the in folder.

My plans have changed I'm going out to see that silly prince of persia movie so I've got time. That is unless it does require being implemented folder by folder. How many directories up can it be?

Look I'm sorry I'm being thick about this but you gotta admit that on this thread the instructions for the rest of PyFFI are pretty detailed while this a footnote of insider spiel.

Yes I want the 'further' (not customized) optimizations. Yes I want to master this not give up in a huff.

If I'm going to need to re-cmd at each folder I just need to know before I set this to run again.

The Vanilla meshes with leading spaces (to watch out for when you repack your BSA)

Delete the duplicates files created during the copying process, the cave meshes (copied from the "out" folder) that had the leading spaces truncated. (listed above)

Well, the ones in "out" folder retains their leading spaces, so what should I do with them?

Also, what do you mean "copied from the out folder"? Do I have to move the items from "out" folder to somewhere else before I pack them back? Why?

Files that PyFFI cannot handle. Add the part in quotes to your skip list.

PyFFI truncated a good chunk of 250KB from that nif, and since I didn't include it in "skip" list, I simply replaced the PyFFI-ed one with the original one from "in" folder. But since PyFFI actually processed the thing, should I really do that? I mean, 250KB is not small...

One other thing:
Remember to set the path to your Python folder (usually first level on your local disk) in the default INI.

I'm sorry but, if anything, this sentence is completely uninformative, because:

That's the contents of default.ini, where should I set the path then? And what is the format? An example, I think, is in order

I agree about lack of informative instructions, can't help you there. If someone would help me with my above portions I will rewrite that section to be more helpful and submit it for inclusion myself.

But I do know about repacking BSA files. PyFFI will not address all meshes and certainly not those already on the skip list, so you will need to either:
1. copy over the skipped files from the in folder to the out folder choosing to not overwrite anything, or ...
2. copy over the newly PyFFI'd meshes from the out folder to the in folder making sure to overwrite all.
either way should work. That way you will be sure to get all the meshes included once again.

If you Operating System is XP or older (can't imagine older) then the leading spaces problem should not be there. The leading spaces problem is what made me ditch my whole optimized BSA back a year ago - and no else had reported the problem for months it seemed.

I believe Arthmoor has included a fix of sorts in the latest UOP update, so even if you do have the issue using the UOP will fix it.

the part about python directory - I didn't get it and didn't do it and it still found python and optimized. Could be outdated info.

I'm not sure what you mean by:
PyFFI truncated a good chunk of 250KB from that nif
... what nif? you mean the meshes in general?

Just what exactly is the problem with the leading spaces? Which ones should I keep? The one with spaces or the ones without? The instruction implies PyFFI will spit out files without spaces, but here I am with files with spaces. I'm lost here...

Also, is there a definite reason as to why I can't pack the bsa from "out" folder? Does that mean I can pack BSA from "in" folder?

EDIT: No, the "nightmotherstatuebase" nif. The instruction said PyFFI can't handle it, and I should skip it, but since PyFFI deleted 250KB worth of data from that stuff (which original size is 1MB, and after PyFFIed becomes around 700KBs) I'm a bit in doubt. I mean, 250KB might mean performance boost

Well if your Operating System can't deal with leading spaces and takes them out and you repackage the BSA then the Oblivion.esm will still have assigned the file path with the leading spaces and you will get what I had a year ago which is numerous caves with the entrance rocks missing. And once again - if you use the UOP this is now addressed (unless I'm wrong) by the UOP redirecting to use the non-leading spaces and including those meshes without leading spaces.

If you repack from the in folder without overwriting the meshes from the out folder then you will get the same bsa you started with. The whole point of the skip list is that it will not address every mesh, so the meshes that were skipped have to be put back in using either method of overwriting as I described above.

I meant what is wrong with the "out" folder. If I copied the files from "in" into "out", skipping all redundant item in the process, shouldn't it make as ideal folder to pack a BSA from as any other folder?

Yes and that is the instructions as I understand them:
4. When its done, copy the contents of the "in" folder into the "out" folder, and choose "no to all" when prompted to overwrite.

I'm currently mid-way through setting up modded Oblivion on my gaming pc again, and was using TES:POSItive as a resource, when I came across this short description of All Natural:

All Natural (AN) - the weather mod of weather mods, syncs interior and exterior weather, see outside weather from inside inside, and now real lights included too

Raestloz, I think you better Verify that you still have spaces after moving your files... (Win 7 cuts them off for me, but I have Win 7-64(could be differant))
