Looks Good on there..one thing tho...no onboard sound here, from above Post this is sound card..."ASUS Xonar D2 Audio Device".

IF your ever in a fight with 20-30 People you will soon know just how necessary a real sound card is. Hearing that many voices and Fight sounds without stutters is Well worth the Expense of a card like this.
Also the Positional Audio really does help with the Immersion..Turning to hear someone from Behind or to the Side is Great.

Gotcha...updating now. I cleaned the site up a bit for more consistency and coherence.

Edit: Why are you using Quiet Feet MAX? Also, do you want me to add that little blurb about your card too?

In the Begining I had Major stuttering. (before finding OSR) .Installed quiet feet and never removed it . I look at it this way, till I get a better Video card I'll take the help with extra FPS the Feet mod gives. as for the Extra Blurb....most don't realize how much a sound card really does free up your CPU to do other things Like the AI. this is a Rare Mother board doesen't even come with ONboard Sound....they needed room for Important things. They give you a Creative X-FI PCI-E 1 Sound card. Also this Board does Both nvidiaSLI and ATI Crossfire . Think thats why they needed the Room...lol

Since you have a sound card, the processing for sound file is primarily done there, so removing Quiet Feet MAX should not really affect your system's performance. I also tell everyone to invest the $25 for some sort of sound card. Any card will make a difference, honestly.

Ok then We can add that to my TO-Do list... And that was enough Off topic for me... as first off this is a thread about PyFFI and I have yet to do that. Also Cleaning Mods with TES4 Edit.

I was originally a morrowind player, so, a fair number of my mods are geared toward giving more of a 'morrowindesque' experience. I am also a big fan of stealth, so, that is why those are there. I have been working on this for a couple years, and the above list is what I consider "standard" now. I just recently built this machine, so, am still adding mods one or two at a time, to fill it out. The vanilla magic system was pretty useless.... so, that got changed as well. At this point, the 'game mechanics' list is fairly complete. I may yet add in a few of the Duke's mods.... they tend to make combat FAR more challenging. (but I am not really a melee kind of guy.) I am waiting for the next version of Unnecessary Violence to come out.

The game runs VERY well, and is quite stable. I had one issue with the Paranoia Quest, (Glarthir) that I have yet to sort out, for now, I am just not dealing with him. I can generally play for as long as I want, and do not crash until such time as I hit the memory cap, and then I am back to the desktop. So far, I have about 76 hours on my current incarnation, and have not experienced any insurmountable problems. Even in cities, during peak crowd times, FPS is smooth, and eminently playable. I have had outdoor encounters with as many as 20 goblins, (or maybe more..... took me a while before I ran out of them....) and combat was smooth, with no stutters, even with six of them 'in my face', and casters standing back pounding me with spells. All in all, I am VERY pleased with the current setup. Textures I think are next. After having a chat with Albertine, and seeing some of his screenies..... (which are awesome by the way) It has become an irresistible urge. I am going to blame that one squarely on him. (her? I don't know....)

In case you are wondering why the backpacks mod is after the bashed patch.... that's so my backpack actually shows up on my avatar. I use the Unlimited Rings/Amulets feature of Wrye Bash, and that 'breaks' my amulet slot backpack so it doesn't show up. (probably a better way to address that, but, this method works just fine.)

Hey! I won't have you questioning my CLEARLY MALE name! Just because I yoinked it from a peg-legged granny doesn't mean it's any less masculine. :ahhh:

And apparently there are several choices for Texture overhauls, make sure you check them all out before deciding squarely on Qarl's.

Ok, Male it is.

Installed QTP3 Redimized, and also the Enhanced vegetation mod. And then spent a few hours dungeon diving..... I didn't notice if there was a hit to framerate... the game still runs VERY smooth.

Greetings!

A couple of things, really. First of all, I want to say thanks again for all of your help. Like I posted over on Blade Of Mercy's 50 Steps thread, I couldn't have gotten things set up and running this well without all the help from you and everyone that has contributed. I found that thread first and started there, but have been using your site frequently to get even more detail and learn more of the ins and outs. It's been a very educational couple of weeks, and I have a stable FCOM build as a result... who can complain?

Seriously, I have moved almost completely out of trouble-shooting mode and am just enjoying the game. For the most part.... lol. Now that I'm not stressing about how I installed Oblivion and all the mods, I am moving on to performance tweaking. And I think I need a very small ($25) improvement that is prominently displayed on your site in a number of places, but I just wanted to run it by you real quick to see what you think.

Basically, I think I am stuck with just the wrong processor for this. I have an AMD X2 4200+, 2.2GHz. I've always been a fan of AMD, but I think this is one place where their slower frequencies are really hurting me (realative to Intel, that is). My video card is more than up to the task I think: nVidia 9800GT w/ 1GB DDR. It's a Windows XP SP3 machine with 3GB OCZ RAM.

When in game, things run very well as long as there aren't too many other actors around. But as soon as I come up on, say, a group of 8 or 10 smugglers, or even worse, a dozen or so dremora in a room in an Oblivion tower, things really slow down. Sometimes down to under 10 FPS, which is approaching unplayable. OSR is doing a good job... it tries very hard to keep things smooth, and generally succeeds. But when it gets that slow, well, under 10 FPS speaks for itself.

So, after reading a bunch on optimization and performance, I think I have determined that AI and scripting are what's killing me. First question: does that sound like a reasonable assessment to you?

If that's really the case, I'm in a bit of a predicament... it just doesn't make sense to spend any money on upgrading the processor in this machine. So it would appear that I am now limited to things that will reduce the load on my CPU, and hopefully give it more juice when it needs to run those scripts. The one thing I don't have? A sound card. So, I am thinking about running out and getting a mid-level card this weekend... not just for this, but also for... OK, OK, it's just for this. But I'm not looking to get something ridiculous, just enough to give my poor CPU a break. Second question: I am not looking for miracles, but considering I have nothing now and what I have told you about the symptoms, do you think I could expect to see some improvement?

That's the size of it. Thanks again for all the help you've provided, both here and on your site. It is invaluable!

Your assessment is very accurate. Upgrading your CPU would definitely help. I would not upgrade to anything less than a 2.8GHz processor though. You really do not need to upgrade your card. If you want to upgrade everything go ahead, but the CPU should make the largest difference. Remember, upgrading your CPU may require a MOBO upgrade as well, so you do not have to worry about not spending money... If you do not have a sound card, that is a cheap upgrade that can make a significant difference too. (The $25 investment.) That is plenty of money spent, haha.

Edit: I love OCZ by the way.

Edit: Albertine has created a compact but impressive guide that focuses on optimization, and it is particularly useful for NVIDIA users, since that is the type of card he uses. http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1081188-guide-how-to-smooth-pc-oblivion-fps/

Yep, that's it on the head. At this stage of this machine's life, it's much more efficient to replace than to upgrade. Can't see forking out the cash needed on a new MOBO and CPU for this thing (well, for high enough quality parts that would make it worth the effort, anyway).

If you do not have a sound card, that is a cheap upgrade that can make a significant difference too. (The $25 investment.) That is plenty of money spent, haha.

That's what I'm thinking now. And I'm not after any particular features, just want to reduce the CPU's load a bit. So a cheap old mid- (or even low- ) grade card really is all that's needed. I think anything more would just be adding features I won't use, or last I checked that was the case. It's been some time since I was up w/ sound card technology. Somehow, that one just slipped by me.

Edit: I love OCZ by the way.

You know, I've always preferred Corsair (and I'll still buy it in a heartbeat if the price is right). But I bought 3 GB of OCZ Reaper HPC and have been really, really impressed. It's as good as Corsair IMHO. I won't go as far as better, but they are right there together.

Will do. Thanks a million, once again. FWIW, my rig is not on par with these other machines, but I don't think I'm asking quite as much out of mine right now as some of the other load orders posted on your site. If you like, I could put together some info similar to what you've been collecting, especially once I get the sound card in. Might be useful for someone else with a machine like mine... capable of running FCOM and many other mods, but getting old enough that you've got to make some choices here and there.

I would love to host your load order. If you want to give me the information now, I can update your page later whenever you want to have it updated. Did you check out those few builds I priced out on my site? If you have other configurations you would like to discuss, ask away. I love planning on building system (even if most plans do not get moved from my wish lists into my cart.) I think checking up on new hardware specs and price changes is fun, anyway.

Ask, and ye shall receive... ha, ha! Here's my load order and some quick specs. I'll get more detail together over the weekend, and hopefully have slightly better results to report after spending $25! And no, I haven't yet looked at those spec'd out machines, but I will. I used to be so into hardware myself... where did the love go? lol

Anyway, here's the starter info. Thanks again!

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+, 2.2Ghz
3 GB OCZ Reaper HPC 6400
160 GB SATA2 HDD (almost exclusively applications)
2 X 500 GB external HDDs (everything else)
nVidia 9800GT, 1 GB DDR3
Windows XP Pro SP3

Average playing time before CTD: 2 - 3 hours, depending. Sometimes much longer (and occasionally shorter)
FPS data: will update, but for now generally mid 20's minimum, up to 30* (OSR cap). The exception is when I have lots of AI to deal with... can dip under 10 FPS! yuck... working on that now.

* - that's an edit. I had 60 in there for some reason, incorrectly. I am using OSR's default 30 FPS cap.

Believe it or not, by the way he goes on about his new performance, he was having issues dropping down to 10FPS too. I do not have an NVIDIA card (or a desktop at the moment) but that guide should be able to squeeze something out of your machine. I do not think he even has a sound card: http://sites.google.com/site/oblivionpoinfo/runoblivion/loadorders/albertine.

Edit: Do you want to put a title and description on that? It is not required, but there are already three "Untitled" pages...:(...it can be really uncreative, really...

Edit: Oh, yeah, I am putting your page together, haha. Have you installed Quiet Feet MAX? Are you not running any mods that do not have ESPs? Which version of OSR are you using?

Edit: Nice LO by the way, especially for your rig. That additional NPC Vars MMM plugin is not recommended for use with FCOM (unless you have a really beefy setup.) Looting NPCs & Creatures adds to the AI package processing load too. You may want to try removing these two and see if the 10 FPS drop occurs less frequently.

Yes, I was just reading his thread (thanks again for the link!) And I believe I have picked up a couple of things that will help... perhaps a little. My machine pales in comparison where CPU and RAM are concerned, but on a 32-bit XP machine, more than 3 GB is really kind of pointless anyway, and not just WRT Oblivion. But that's neither here nor there, really. Hmmm, maybe if I get a sound card I can rival his stats! Ha!

Untitled is no good at all. FCOM has been the central focus of my entire endeavor here, so it should definitely reference that. How about something to the effect of "Running FCOM+ on an Aging Machine"?

Description: After being away from Oblivion for the better part of 6 months, the itch finally became too unbearable and I set out to play again. But I didn't want to play just Vanilla Oblivion, or even a heavily modded version... no, I wanted to play FCOM. I mean, who wouldn't? It looks amazing! Or at least that's what I thought 6 months ago. Then I tried (half-heartedly) to install and run it, got incredibly frustrated, and gave up... for 6 months!

So the itch finally returned, and I got back on the forums, and slowly but surely started piecing together a plan to try again. With a lot of help, and a good deal of patience (that's a big one as far as I'm concerned), I was much more successful this time, and on the exact same machine I failed with before. That's big in my case, because I do not have a very good processor for Oblivion. As I have learned, Oblivion hits my CPU harder than anything else on my machine. Making matters worse, I have a dual core, but its frequency is relatively low (2.2Ghz), and that's what really matters here. So, not the best situation for what I wanted...

And yet, I am playing FCOM on this machine now, and it is awesome! It took some choices on my part (for example, I really like having buildings and landmarks and such visible in the distance... but combining that with Better Cities, well, that was asking too much. Had to make a choice there). So here is some info on my machine, and my current load order. I'll have more to add soon.

How's that?

Beautiful. I will start updating now. All that is left is the OBSE plugins list, no-ESPs mod list and the version of OBSE you are using...

I have installed Quiet Feet MAX. And yes, I do have some replacers that don't have ESPs (I believe)... I'll get a more complete list together beyond just the load order. OSR is version 4.1.0.

Thanks! And those are two very good catches there. I actually remember reading something about NPC Vars possibly being a hit and totally forgot about it. I'll try that and see how it does.

Just got that last post.... OBSE is v18 beta 6. I'll get the lists together for you next, though that may be tomorrow. I'm getting angry looks from my significant other at the moment (lol)... we're um, supposed to be spending some time together... man, I always get in trouble this way! Ha!

OK, you know I had to try this before calling it a night... and I did, at the risk of banishment to the doghouse! Heh, heh... just kidding, I think...

Seriously though, these two items seem so obvious now, but I would have gone on indefinitely without thinking of either one. I went ahead and disabled/un-merged both, and lo and behold...

I went into Sercen in god mode, just to see. I figured there would be plenty of NPCs in there. And there were. I picked a fight with all of them, 11 total. Never dipped below 10 FPS, not one time! Now, during the thick of it, it pretty much stayed in the 10 - 14 FPS range (I have some screens of the fight, FPS 10, 11, and 13, I think). But that is a big improvement! And as they started dropping off, it gradual improved back up into the low 20s, at which point there really isn't any noticeable slowdown at all. When I was experiencing dips below 10 FPS before, I wasn't even in combat with all of the NPCs in question, and the numbers were usually in the 6 - 8 range, not 10+ (with the exception of the Oblivion towers I mentioned before... man, I guess it's OOO? but wow, they really like to pile those guys up in some of those little rooms! Oblivion was dangerous before, but wow, is it a whole new ballgame now! but I digress...)

Anyway, I'll have more for you tomorrow, but I wanted to let you know that your suggestion was spot-on once again!

Since you have a sound card, the processing for sound file is primarily done there, so removing Quiet Feet MAX should not really affect your system's performance. I also tell everyone to invest the $25 for some sort of sound card. Any card will make a difference, honestly.

A minor nitpick: It needs to be capable of hardware acceleration before it will truly help. It's debatable if many of those cheap $25 cards do.

And if you wouldn't mind, a load order update for my part of your page:

Not entirely sure what you're classifying as "cosmetic" but I'm using the major stuff. QTP3-Redimized and RAEWVD being the big ones.

Add to that, OSR 4.1 and OBSE 0018. System specs available here: http://www.tesnexus.com/modules/members/index.php?id=684492
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, LAA patch in use.
