I've got a question about the FCOM install guide portion (which I'm still finding extremely helpful--thanks!). When creating OMODs for something like Frans or Loth's Blunt Weapons that has plugins that FCOM doesn't want, do we need to keep them out of the OMODs? Maybe the answer is an obvious "yes!" here, but since the guide doesn't mention it, I was wondering if I might be doing something wrong. :/

For instance, Loth's has three esp files: "...for NPCs," "Mobs" and the main esp. I think FCOM only uses the main one and then has its own FCOM Loth's esp as well.

And Fran's of course has lots of extra esps and things that FCOM doesn't want (which I did leave out of the OMOD I made as per the guide).

Sorry for the confusion.

Yes. The OMOD scripts take care of preventing the installation of unneeded plugins. The guide specfies when you need to delete most things. Following the guide, the Fran installation should not have generated extra plugins. What extra plugins did you end up with? I may need to clarify more there.

Hmm, okay, maybe just with Fran's then? I ended up with more wilderness life, optional house chest loot, new adventurers, optional dungeon chest locks, leveled arena, vendor tweaks, dungeon chest loot, leveled quests, respawn time... I think that's all of them.

It's also very possible I did something wrong, though.

Yes, we are me :D I (both me's) similarly am not too bothered about being acknowledged, as long as someone else doesn't take credit for what I say or do, I don't mind not being credited when I help others. But if you already have done (twice!) then you already have done.

Yup, those are the INIs. One of the INI files contains the path to python and the "in" and "out" directory paths. Make sure the path to Python is correct. In the other INI, you will see the skip list (which you do not need to touch PyFFI-optimizing only the Vanilla files.) To run PyFFI such that it puts the PyFFI-optimized files in the out folder. Drop whatever loose (not compressed archives) files you want in the "in" folder, right-click on the default INI file, choose "Run PyFFI," and wait for PyFFI to finish. It even mirrors the folder structure of the "in" folder, so you can PyFFI multiple mods at once or a properly-packaged BAIN project. Last note: Now, PyFFI-optimizing with the right-click method acknowledges the settings of the other INI (the skip list.) Therefore, you can casually run it on files as well, but the right-click method does not create backups. You have to have the "Run PyFFI" command for that, which only appears right-clicking on the default INI file.

I don't know if this would be a positive addition or not, but one choice a user must make is whether to use Fran's SI stuff, and this dictates whether to use the USIP mobs or USIP mobs FCOM. Personally, I was unsure what the differences would be between using Fran's or not using it. Fran's readme talks some about it, but I was still left a bit hazy. Maybe it would be useful to have a brief (if it's possible to be brief) aside, something like, "If you choose to use Fran's... if you choose not to and use the FCOM USIP..."

Would be helpful for dunces like me. :) This guide functions in many ways like a "For Dummies" book, not that it's for dumb people or overly simplified but just that it presents the information in a concise, easy to find manner and really walks you through. So therefore any moment of, "Oh crap, what should I do??" sticks out. :)

In my opinion, which may or may not be worth a lot (my opinion as a non-expert, at least), this install guide was sorely needed. It leaves me guessing a lot less than the "official" guide. I know the official guide does not intend to leave one guessing, but this kind of stuff is more difficult for some than others. I would be in the former group, and I think the install guide and whole collection of info is great. I'm learning all kinds of stuff I never knew the first time around.

Edit: Here's an odd issue and I don't expect a common one (tho I thought I'd mention it just in case). When activating my Oblivion Warcry OMOD as per the instructions, it doesn't activate and tells me at the end of installation that it couldn't find a wraith nif file. I fully expect this is my error when creating the OMOD, so I'm going to delete it and make it a second time. Maybe merging the patch in with it was a no no.

Edit edit: Well, I remade the OMOD, and it worked fine this time. I made two separate OMODs, one for Warcry and one for the patch, and I just removed the unwanted plugin from both OMODs rather than scripting. Not sure what fixed the problem. Probably just redoing the OMOD. Doubt it had anything to do with the merge or the script. Shrug!

I did something wrong I think when I made the OMOD. It appears some necessary files may be missing entirely (the Fran's base files). Not sure what happened. I think installing manually would help, but that would remove the convenient failsafe that omods provide.

Woof, I always manage to find a way to mess something up.

Not sure I understand how you are going about this, but this is the way I worked it:
Backed up Oblivion directory
Deleted everything other than vanilla ESM and ESPs, deleted all filles from within textures, meshes, and sounds
I did above two steps to see what files frans would actually install

Ran the Frans installer and followed the FCOM first installer guide to the letter for what options to pick
Ran the Frans installer to get the BSA
After install, I found that only ESM/ESP/BSA files were installed, nothing in textures or meshes, so that is good.
I renamed the Fran BSA file so it is loaded by one of the Frans esp files, that way I do not have to modify the oblivion.ini to search the Frans BSA.


So I copied these files to a folder calleed "Frans FCOM Installation". Made a BAIN and OMOD for this. This way, I allways install the correct Frans files. I think there are 5 or 6 total for an FCOM Frans install.

That sounds like a wise method to me. I'll try that.

I think what happened was I removed a few necessary files myself thinking they were unnecessary when I made the OMOD. In the FCOM guide it says to only use certain files, but I think I deleted something necessary along with the unnecessary one. That's what I get for mixing install guides... I was just a little iffy on what was needed (the day/night cycle and spawn plugins aren't I don't think).

Just to follow up on my response to Jesse:

OBMM is great because of scripting but BAIN is WAY better for installing. However, trying to figure out what you need for any install can be confusing (at least for me) using just BAIN. So my work around has been:

Have a clean copy of oblivion folder to use for OBMM installs, then take the installaed files and make a BAIN. Very helpful if you know what mods you will use as you do not need ALL the options of any particular mod.

Since most scripts look for mod esp files for some options, I just have to copy that particular mod esp to the clean oblivion folder. AN exception to that is mods thal look to see if QTP3 is installed, they look for one of the dds files I think so it is good to look at every omod script in the mod to see what they use to determine what to install.

Time consuming but ensures a correct install of needed files for any configuration, especially BIG mods.

I went as far as making omods for my FCOM install at one time. Installed OMOD (nice!) then took all the files and made ONE FCOM install BAIN. Nice since I play the same fcom config for all my builds. The scripts for OOO, MMM, COBL, uFCOM, Tamriel Travellers are very nice.

Hope someone finds this usefull.

Well, I corrected my errors above. As I suspected, it was something I did entirely wrong. I deleted necessary Fran files while removing unnecessary ones (which I probably wouldn't have needed to do--BOSS probably would have alerted me to them anyway eventually).

Another small update (yes, things are continuing to improve):
FPS City: 20 - 30
FPS Other: 15 - 30

FPS has dipped closer to 10 FPS at times when many NPCs are in the immediate area, but since removing unnecessary NPC AI scripts this almost never happens now. Even in a heavily packed IC Market District for example... when you fast travel there at certain times you may catch a dozen or more NPCs all huddled together while their AI scripts run to tell them what they should be doing. I tested that multiple times and consistently bottomed out at 18 - 20 FPS, considerably better than 10! In fact, it is tempting to raise my lower end FPS ranges to reflect what things are like most of the time I am in game. But this is more accurate in the long run, to be sure.

It sounds like I need to be clearer with the Fran install. It could definitely use some screen shots, but I will not be able to get those up for about three weeks. Following the instructions, you should not check anything MORE than what is mentioned. Make sure no extraneous check boxes are checked.

The latter is the latest. I forgot about that other page. I need to check it out... The top part is fine, but the stuff in the codebox (which I cannot really modify) is old. I am going to get rid of it. The Installing Mods page explains the top portion in more detail, and that package list is outdated (and incorrect.)

Edit: I will post that summary explanation on the page with the BAIN package list because that is what that particular summary pertains to, anyway.

My Package List

It seems there is a lot more emphasis on Load order than there is on Package order. I assume that in your package list you don't activate all of these packages. You are just listing all the similar mods and versions so that people know where to put them.
I'm using your section headers because I find them very helpful. There are some mods I'm using that weren't in your package list. I tried to use the Summary of The Organization the organize them as best I could. I believe that with some mods the install order is critical, others not. Could you give me some insight in cases where the order is critical? In the column with the title Tom's, I am cross-referencing the order which you placed the mod. The "Installing Mods" page and my package list are all about the package order (which reflect the installation order.) It is just as important as your LO when you are installing lots of mods, especially overlapping visual enhancements. You package list looks fine, except for the "Last" divider should be at the top. I was wondering what had happened to all of your careful sorting at the end there...until I saw where the "Last" marker was. Newly-added packages are placed above it, so it should be in the 000 slot, unless you have unsorted packages. At least, I find that less confusing...

A small typo, unless I am reading over it.

If you kept the thumbs.db file or are anol about separating docs in archives (which Bash would already put in the "Docs" folder for you) rename the "Data" folder "00 Core Files" then create "01 Docs" and "02 Extras" for the readme and Thumbs.db file respectively.
>> notes: if you want Bash to store something in the docs folder, put the items in a folder "docs" and put that in the top level folder "XX Docs".
Move the ReadMe into "07 Docs"


Notice the marked Docs folder? It starts with creating a 01 Docs folder, and then you put a ReadMe in 07 Docs, which seems - weird.

Just a quick note: Have you ever thought about adding a general troubleshooting guide to the site? Stuff like checking your load order, using FormID Finder for missing meshes, actually reading the readmes, activating and deactivating mods to find problems, etc.?
