TESO is launching with a cash shop

Post » Tue Feb 04, 2014 6:23 am

One of the big things I've noticed and some people seem to be in complete denial about is that it's clear ESO is already launching with a cash shop. Sellilng CE exclusive bonuses in a "store" via a microtransaction IS A CASH SHOP folks. And this is confirmed on their site right now, under the faq - after launch you can purchase the CE items in their store. Maybe it makes some of you feel more safe, happy, and comfy inside to delude yourself into thinking that is somehow different than buying a bag extension or something, but it's the same thing. If they are launching with this sort of stuff, I can promise you their "store" is going to have plenty more of it. And don't tell me that "they said they won't have a cash shop!!" nonesense it's clear they don't follow their word or the pre-order and CE bonus thing never would have happened. And the proof is in the pudding - it's already laid out on their faq site that you can purchase the CE vanity items and race in their store after release. THAT IS A CASH SHOP.

Calm down - TERA had same opportunity to upgrade to CE and it hadnt had a cash-shop. (well... not until it went free-to-play at least)

Yep, cash shop from day one. Supposedly all cosmetic stuff, but after this collectors edition jargon, I wouldn't be surprised if you can buy horses, exp boosts and the like.

Swtor allowed people to upgrade their copies of the game after launch as well, long before the horrid cartel market was decided on. Zero shock here. If they start offering extended inventory space and xp bonuses and shizzle like that then I'll hit the "OMGZ Cash SHOPZ" button. Allowing people the opportunity to upgrade their purchase just doesn't hurt my feelings.

Guild Wars 2, Final Fnatasy 14, Tera....

The list goes on. The choice to get a collectors edition is literally everywhere now. and something you should get used to. And if you don't have thus said collectors edition, an upgrade from standard to collectors edition should definitely be there, should players choose they want to spend the extra money that they may have not had previously, and want to get the CE as well.

Nothing new in games honestly. And again, in no way are cosmetics going to help anyone win. Don't see your problem, nor your point.

Then why are you here? If this is all so offensive, why are you not out finding a new game that will not have a cash shop?

guys, gals, you have to realize this is a war we simply cannot win. look at all the money, and work they put into this. they made that video about the CE and hired financial experts and basicly have thier plans allready set forth. many people including myself have iether allready bought or are buying the CE. yes they screwed up but, they got suits tellin them what do do and how to do it. if they refuse to obey then they will be fired or demoted.

well /shrug even wow has a store, so what is the big deal.. nothing new, it will be mostly services, the dev's have said no boosts or anything like that, time will tell if they stay true to that, I have no problem with the store, I doubt there will be anything in the store I NEED to play the game..:)

I will be really disappointed in The Elder Scrolls Online if it has a cash shop or microtransactions. Cash shops and microtransactions do not belong in monthly subscription based video games only in Free to Play (F2P) video games.

I want to grind, do quests, do dugneons or do raids to get rewarded with experience points (EXP), have mounts drop and have potions drop.

Selling this stuff for real life money in a monthly subscription based video game is ridiculous.

Even World of Warcraft with the store where Blizzard Entertainment sells armor that is useless, pets, and mounts pisses me off and I have been paying every month to play World of Warcraft since 2004.

The cash shop has been known for an long time, its suposed to hold cosmetic items, mounts are cosmetic as they are not better than the horses you buy for gold, costumes and pets.
It also offer services like upgrade to imperial probably also stuff like select faction to play in and even the far more expensive change faction for existing player.
Later it might get transfer account between platforms and between EU and US.

All this except the upgrade to imperial edition is stuff who has been in WOW cash shop for years. No WOW does not have costumes but that is just an fun thing, you can get costumes outside of the shop too.
Its not that you need the cash shop in wow to get an pet or mount anyway however for some reasons the mounts is an big thing,

This is by Far the best thing I've read here the past few days. I do too (as long as they leave anything but cosmetic stuff to the cash shop)

No we can not win, however they looses big if players start canceling subscriptions, in short if they put more content in the shop its just to cancel it and wait a couple of mounts until it goes F2P or simply play another game.

You only risk $60 unless you was stupid enough to buy the CE.

I wasted $60 on Tomb raider who I played 5 hours. Guess I get some hundred out of ESO no matter that.

Most of the stuff in the WoW "store" goes to charity. I know this is off topic but it really annoys me how people bring this up in every thread that involves this.

What some people seem to ignore is the fact that they announced that their plans for a cash shop months ago....

Most of it goes straight to Blizzard, actually. Charity sales only happen occasionally, and when they do the charity usually gets only 50% of the sale price.

That doesn't mean the OP is correct though. While ESO may have some sort of store to buy account services, it has nothing to do with an MMO having CE and Pre-Order bonus's.

Well good for wow, going to a charity does not make it any less of a store.. still in game /shug, but like I said I don't care if it has a store.. just one of those things /shrug

Seems all it takes is to call race a cosmetic issue then there you go: for sale in the cash shop.

Start bluring lines between content and cosmetics.

It is not a question if it will happen only when it will happen. This game ain't paying for itself - you are paying for it in every pay format they can think of.

  • Sage confirms that Matt Firor simply picked his words poorly when he mentioned there would be a cash shop on top of the subscription fee. Sage says that Firor was talking about things like name changes – things you cannot normally do in the course of your gameplay. He even states that to his knowledge there is no cash shop.

THERES NO CASH SHOP

stop spreading rumours!

Inflammatory, insulting, and dismissive posts have gone away. So have some flamebait and trolling. Don't insult other members, behave, yada yada yada.

Well honestly, should probably just close the thread. People posting misinformation based on ignorance of this genre is worse then how people tell him hes wrong IMO. The chicken little syndrome is getting way out of hand here.

They're selling a playable race, a mount, a pet and an experience buff item. How is that not a cash shop?

(And no, calling it a collecter's edition doesn't help. You are still exchanging real money for digital items.)

Yes TESO is launching with a cash shop.

We already knew.

How many of you will NOT buy the game because of this? I am curious.

And to anyone saying a sub model excludes a cash shop: guys get real this was true... ten years ago. :bonk:
