Tesselation Problem

Post » Sat Aug 20, 2011 2:01 pm

All I can say is wow. Has the gaming industry gotten so bad that they continually cut off their own noses to spite the face? Don't get me ENTIRELY wrong. I genuinely appreciate the update. The game is, with out a doubt, the most gorgeous DX11 FPS out and could be for quite some time.

The problem I am facing, now that I'm aware of it, is the appropriateness of it; or should I say the implementation of the update.

Check out this article:

http://www.techreport.com/articles.x/21404/1

It appears some of the programmers at EA / Crytek have gotten a little sloppy on the job. What they have done is essentially given us a boost in graphics and overall beauty, but paid no attention as the overall implementation of the boost.

In fact, what has happened, will no doubt take Crysis 2 as THE most beautiful DX11 FPS and made it impossible to use as a benchmark to compare other games to.

Why would I say this?

If you've read the article you'll realize its because of the haphazard way tessellation was implemented. It is, in fact, running on areas and levels where it makes NO APPRECIABLE difference.

Many times it is running in backround, water for example (one of the most important and tessellated objects) is running when THERE IS NO WATER TO BE FOUND.

My computer takes it in stride. There is little if any appreciable struggle noted. Seriously, why the heck was this done???? I'm lucky...I have the top of the line GTX 580 by EVGA, but what about those not so fortunate. Will they have to upgrade. Perhaps upgrade needlessly?

Answer 1 : To cripple their own game and make it far more CPU / GPU intensive than it needs to be

Rebuttal 1 : That's a bunch of conspiracy theory garbage.

I agree with the rebuttal. I think.......although....if you read the article CLOSELY you'll notice that Nvidia cards take much less of a noticeable performance hit than do the ATI cards? Coincidence??????? I'll let you all be the judge????? I'm not so sure on this one.

Answer 2: (the most likely reason) COMPLETE AND TOTAL, UNadvltERATED LAZINESS ???!!!

Rebuttal 2: Um..........no, we actually INTENDED to have tessellated water running in the streets where there is no water. Because under the streets there is water running in the sewers. Ya....that's the ticket.

My answer to rebuttal 2: What a bunch of nonsense.

Admittedly, my knowledge of programming is little to none, but would someone with a deeper understanding please help me to comprehend (AFTER READING THE ABOVE POSTED ARTICLE) what the heck is going on here??????

If used right that amount of tessellation should only rendered when close to the object and as you get further way, the tessellation decreases, reducing the load on the GPU. It works the same was as LOD does on objects. If you look at the Heaven benchmark, it actually does this, yet the frame-rate stays above 25fps like in Crysis 2 on my GTX460.

You can cook up a conspiracy theory that NVIDIA paid Crytek to do this to sell NVIDIA GTX580s/590s but meh.

Did you read the article though......there is tessellated water being drawn / rendered beneath areas that have no water in them???? Why put the GPU / CPU through that. Its like writing two games, one on top of the other. You can't see the game under the one on top, but its there because the GPU is taking an appreciable hit as is your gaming performance overall. Why draw the bottom layer if there is no need for it....e.g water example shown several times throughout the article.

you do realize that water is under EVERY map, not in the sewers. example: if you fall through the ground (happens sometimes when you die) you will hit ALWAYS water, this water is always tessalated. you can try this yourself by making a new map in the sandbox editor and just noclip through the ground, there will be water...

Look. We just don't know how Crytek went about doing this. If you apply tessellation to an object and forget it's rendering across the entried level then yes it's probably classed as a bug.

The point I was making was that those areas shouldn't be tessellated heavy at distance anyway, so it could be a bug or something they forgot to do.

Why is it?????? Why not make solid ground under all the levels? Why tessellated water that we can not appreciate unless we fall through a glitch / have the clipping turned off? Why all that power being used for, what seems to me, no reason?

Again.....remember, my knowledge of game programming is somewhere around the primordial soup level? I'm just going off the article and logic.

Yeah but has anyone actually done any tests on how much impact the tessellated water has on the levels where you cannot see it? So just turn the water detail down and test frame-rates where you cannot see the water.

i use just a little more GPU power on the SP than the MP, the SP does use more VRAM though, anyways because of this i'd say your conspiracy has lost some weight, sure if the SP killed my cards i may have to stand still and listen but fact is fact : the MP which uses no tessellation(two 'L's in tessellation) uses only a little less GPU power than SP, so no this feature wasn't over used thank you very much, many of the advanced features are more CPU stressing anyways, like shading.
Are intel in on this too?

Whats this?, people are complaining that a Crysis title melts their computer? (gasp), this is truly a world exclusive article. This should be making headlines.....why is it not? Oh thats right, because this is exactly what we were spamming for for about 3 months on the forums. A game that brings systems to their knees. This game even through its imperfections is still the best looking and best optimized Dx11 title out there, or should we drag Metro 2033 into this discussion?

Ok. First off I was pretty humble in explaining my minimal experience with programing knowledge but your post serves nothing but to flame...for the most part. You point out my misspelling of tessellation in the op, which by the way is spelt right in all other posts. Second you point out my "conspiracy theory" which is not mine but rather eluded to in the article which you obviously didn't read. So next time keep your comment to yourself. Don't bother flaming about the 911 conspiracy and relate it to a damn video game. You are obviously a UK child that fails to realize you would be speaking German if it wasn't for my forefathers. So hows that for a conspiracy theory.

Keep your ass face blather to yourself and try reading the article before you try and come off as intelligent. What you really did was respond to something with an unfounded opinion because you failed to read the data. Just like a typical lib. From the UK.

Did you notice I said verbatim w (your second to last sentence) that you did in my op. The fact is there are more sloppy mistakes. Admit it and just answer the question
If you cant really do that then don't post. The article was very techincal and has some serious points to make. Instead you guys post opinion and not even close to an objective discussion. By the way....its one day old. I'm sure a lot more is gonna be said about it

Come on guys. Its pretty obvious you're blind fanboys. Demand perfection from a game that costs $80 for it and all the dlc.

I don't get what that article is crying about. Everyone knows they had to rush DX11 out (otherwise it would have been included with the game in the first place), so obviously it's not perfect. Get a better gfx card and STFU

What he said,
This same quote was said back in 2007. People were angry because a 9800gt couldn't max out Crysis. Why dont you bring up an article on the first Crysis and its **** optimization.......oh wait........people dont care, the game is still considered the "best" looking game to date. Same exact **** can be said for the sequel.

You can remove the water, but why oh why would we ask for a beautiful game, and expect in return a incredibly dumbed down game, we dont even know the frame rate it consumes, would it really matter if you got 1 extra frame to remove the water?

Mehhh.... GTFO fool

Crysis 2 was rushed from the begining no DX11, bugggy as hell not what we expect from Crytek. This tessilation undewater is down right weird and uncalled for, extra programming time could have been spent elsewhere. Has there been an offical response from Crytek about this???? probably not they dont give a f&ck.

The state of the game now is great compared to when it was released, the visuals / performance is good on my machine, but why waste time rendering tesselated objects under water?????? Someone must have an answer from Crytek...... if so please give us one!!!!

Great game engine... just need someone to fully utilise it and use it properly Crytek have proved they obviously can't!!!

"... talking about a concrete barrier of the sort that you'll find lining highways all across the country at this time of the year. Also known as a Jersey barrier ..."
its not the water. its about the objects, they have so much needless tessellation.
open the Editor and take a look.

i got an ATI 5870, its ranked next to the 480. you can play crysis 2 maxed with the 480, but not with beast 5870 (480 is a beast too;).
Crytek wont patch this, believe me.
so we can buy a Nvidia card, or we reduce the resolution (1366x768 will work maxed about 30 fps), or we set objects to extrem.
i have set objects to extrem, because i do not stand in front of a wall and watch the wall (eating a cake and thinking "yeah, man i got such a very, very powerful system) ...
they want ATI users to think "oh man, i got only an ATI, now i cant run Crysis 2 maxed, im so poor ... have to buy an Nvidia."
what will you do? buy an Nvidia, paying 450 bugs, for only 1! game and only 1 feature (that no one recognice who really plays)???

*Sigh....... just comes to show how ignorant you idiots are....... Crysis 2 was a nvidia game, Crysis 2 got 2 million dollars thrown at ts face to make it a nvidia game.......therefore......Crysis 2, is optimized for Nvidia, Not ATI, if you would read the posts people make on these forums, you would know. ......I have 2 damn uber budget nvidia cards, and even i can max this game out at 60fps. You dont need a super computer here, just a gaming one. SO honestly from these posts, you either have ATI, or a 9600gt on a dual core.

Its typical noob nature to want to max out a game, without investing money into hardware, just one last question, where were you when Crysis 1 came out?

Rushed out low quality update just shows how Crytek treats PC gamers. Instead of making a good use of tessellation they decided to cheap out and tessellate flat surfaces.

Most gamers will judge the patch not by its glorious look, but by how it will bring high end hardware to knees. So they made a wise business decision - tessellate the **** out of flat surfaces instead of spending money on modelling large amount of new details on objects and balancing visual quality/performance.

Nvidia has a bad reputation paying devs to lock AA and release patches that disable DX10.1 to have advantage over competitors. But I don't think it is a case. Crysis 2 was decided to be a console port on PC. And there were no DX11 patch planned before the game was out and was criticized for the lack of visual advancements. Crytek made a rushed lazy job saving itself money via cheap tricks.

What manufacturer/model 460's do you have? I wouldn't really call two 460's budget as at least here in the UK buying two of them is roughly the same price as a 480/580 which would be the more ideal and less power consuming option.

There is moaning about the tessellation but I don't see people actually proving if such things in that article actually make a big affect on performance. If you have any proof, like making that level perform better via the editor then do it.

NVIDIA cards have tessellation units which help with tessellation performance, so I don't see any proof of performance dropping off compared to less tessellated objects. All the article says is that there are high tessellation areas which drop performance but without proving that less tesselation actually makes such a difference.
