TESV and Steam

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 1:11 am

The reason being is while steam is great, one time my internet went out so i was like hey ill just play a single player NON-online game, i bought the game off of steam. So i went to play and what do you know to play the freaking NON online game i had to be online because steam wanted to update.... and since it couldnt update it said u cant do this in offline mode and then shut down again and i couldnt play my game so i said [censored] and went to watch tv.

Eww... I hate it when that happens. I hope they won't make Steam a requirement. :glare:

what??? Are there going to be multiple versions?!
I think even if you buy the CD in a store, you'll still have to run it from steam. Pretty hard install and high potential to fail if you didn't download it from steam itself..

I did not read the discussion before replying in the thread. I thought about having an optional Steam version instead of buying a disc, like with Oblivion and Morrowind... not like how they are doing it with FO:NV, which really sounds irritating.

I'll change my vote to "no".

Hurray for the opposition! =D

Note that I said that I think that's going to happen, not that I know it. It's what happened to me with that blasted MW2..
First I HAD to make an account. But my computer was brand-new (couldn't play Far Cry 2 either) because of I had no internet yet.
After doing that, I managed to get it to install. Because the previous install did not finish, because of not having internet, I was having ussues.
The game thought it had installed it, because all files were there. Though I did not register it on steam yet.

So after creating the account on steam, and downloading loads of unnessecary updates, it started downloading MW2 after I gave in my key.
After wasting a fair bit of my download limit (because my internet is rather fast), I canceled it, and after loads of looking around, I managed to get it to add MW2 to my games collection.
Then, after it did some more stuff that I'm not allowed to see, I could FINALLY be disappointed by how bad the game actually was.

Yes, it is THAT tricky.

Well, I want to buy the collectors edition (hoping there actually is one), and I would really hate to have to install steam just to play it.

o.O What does that edition include more?

Oblivion was the single best purchase I did for my PS3. It included the knights of the nine.
When I bought my rig, I bought OB right away. =D

No, I really really hate steam. I've had so many problems with it

Most annoying was the time I didn't pay my ISP bill and I couldn't game at all cause steams offline mod refused to work. I'm never wasting money on buying a game over steam again

Even when buying it non-steam, the game can still have a steam DRM..

Those that say they wouldnt mind a steam version, but would like a hard copy version without steam are mistaken.

Of any new release game that has gone via steam, all version require steam to play, there is no version that doesnt. Either everyone uses steam for the game, or some other DRM is used. Only old games that have ported to steam downloading store (like oblivion and fallout 3) have hard copy versions that dont use steam.

I have to admit, I had trouble with installing MW2 on steam the first time, it was pretty confusing. But when i figured it out no problems

True

Sill, maybe I was a little harsh because these problems happened recently. Long story short, I couldn't afford my ISP bill and I didn't have the internet for a month. There are a number of reasons why offline mode can't work (namely missing an update, which you can't download due to being offline...)

Despite these problems, steam is, dare I say, pretty damn useful. I just feel uneasy when I don't have a hard copy of a game. A digital copy feels unsecure. It's hard to explain

^ This.

The most irritating is when you don't have a connection and Steam won't let you play. It happens occasionally.

Why would anybody not want it on steam? It's not like they won't release a physical copy too. I'll personally buy the physical copy, but it would be great to be on steam to reach more people.

Nah I like physical copies more. They install quicker and are generally more mod friendly.

I don't mind if it can be added to you steam-account. But I want the option to install it without Steam, preferably without securom as well (i.e. boxed copy).
In other words, NO TO STEAMWORKS!

Explain. Name me one function of steam that Xfire doesn't do better.

Not really, securom does not stop piracy, simply entering a cd-key would give the same protection.

I could accept the simple disc-check version of securom that does not install anything extra on the computer. But the need for the disc in the drive belongs in the 90's when the hard drivers were small.

My vanilla PS3 Oblivion came with a map of Cyrodiil.
My GOTY PS3 Oblivion came with a map of Cyrodiil and the Shivering Isles.

I would prefer it to install 20 Gb worth of DRM above the use of steam.

and your point is?

If you buy a hardcopy of the game you will still get these extras....thats how stores make sure they dont lose all their sales to online stores.
