Is TESV going to be multi-platform?

Post » Sun Feb 13, 2011 12:12 pm

It's not the graphics so much as the interface, which had to be ridiculously clumsy to support a controller instead of a mouse/keyboard.

I believe PCs and consoles should have separate interfaces, but surely the interface isn't some huge deal that can't be redesigned. Bethesda should do it, but if some PC users are going to deny us console players TES V over an interface, then I see a problem. PC players get a construction set, right?

I don't want TES V to not be on consoles, but I don't want the PC version to not be a good PC version because of them. For example, Bethesda should include high-res textures(look at mods for Oblivion and Fallout 3), a PC-friendly interface, modding tools(which they already do), and more things that make the PC version stand out in their future games.

No, except for a bigger hard drive and Wi-Fi. No additional RAM or anything.

I agree with you on the interface part, but again, as I said, who had a computer in early 2006 that could run Oblivion with anything higher than the high settings the PC version got? If all that's left is the interface for console users to get a crappy port over(Morrowind), then what's the point? Then us console users(without a construction set) are stuck with a crappy interface. I believe Bethesda should make separate interfaces, but if any platform were to have an unsatisfactory interface, why would it be the ones without the tools to fix it?

Hmm. I love how much money Microsoft has cheated people out of, just on hard drives alone. Seriously, you can buy a 1 TB external hard drive for the same amount as a 60 GB Xbox hard drive.

Well that is not entirely true. They did revise some of the hardware:

Microsoft updated the internals of the console with a 45nm integrated CPU and GPU. By comparison, the chipset at launch was manufactured on a 90nm process, and was later updated to be manufactured on a 65nm process. Smaller manufacturing processes generally lead to cooler running chips and reduced manufacturing costs.

So yes, some of the hardware is new besides just the Wi-Fi and hard drive.

I never said that the console versions should have a bad UI. I stated that the PC version UI should be PC friendly. I find the UI on Oblivion to be good when my brother is playing it on the PS3, but the same UI on the PC is horrible because it is just so big and interfering.

But, yes, the console version should be made console-friendly and the PC version should be made PC-friendly. I think we can agree on that?

I don't think Oblivion was downsized simply because it was multiplatform. I think it was just Bethesda taking a more mainstream approach to making their RPG's. Some people liked it, and some didn't, but multiplatform development is what yields the most profit, especially with all the piracy in PC gaming these days

Sorry, I overreacted. I had a bad day. I agree the UI should be designed separately for the different platforms. I just don't want to see the direct conversion of a PC game to consoles so that I need to squint to read and I read your post incorrectly.

As for "new" consoles, I just want the next generation announced, already. Kinect, Move, and slim versions aren't doing anything new, yet somehow are still selling and prolonging the deaths of consoles"extending" console lifetimes. The day people can easily run Crysis on its highest settings with a console needs to come, eventually. How much more advanced can graphics get, anyway?

Sony said that the PS3 will be the main console until 2014 or 2015. That's still 4 or 5 years from now. Most likely Nintendo and Microsoft will follow suit (more importantly Microsoft I suppose since ESV won't be released on the Wii and unless Nintendo beefs up the next console considerably it won't be on the next one either).

Long story short. Unless ESV isn't coming out for another 5 years more than likely it will be made for this generation of consoles.

Ok you guys look at it this way. Bethesda has not told us what their game studio is working on right now. They have many games that they are producing but the game that they are currently developing is still a mystery. Lets assume they are making TES V and then we will start our journy at the near beggining of the milenium...
Morrowind for the was released in May of 2002. Oblivion for the was in stores March 20th 2006. There was a four year gap between the last two TES games. However, Oblivion was the first game that Bethesda had made for the 360 and the new hardware was of course something they were not familiar with. There was a 2.5 year gap between Oblivion and Fallout 3; this shows that Bethesda is far more used to developing for the 360 and PS3 then they were when making Oblivion. I would think that now the devs are used to the new hardware that it will take them around the same amount of time to make TES V that it took them to make Fallout 3, two and one half years. This means though that Bethesda has been working on TES V for almost TWO YEARS now. Catch my drift anyone??? I can not imagine the console devs releasing an Xbox 720 or a PS4 so soon after the release of the PS Move, Kinect/Natal and the redesigned Xbox 360. It simply WON'T HAPPEN. This is why I KNOW that Bethesda is creating the next TES game on the current generation consoles.

In my opinion TES V will be announced either at Quake Con 2010 or E3 2011. I don't want them to rush the project I just want them to announce it. TES V will most likley be realesd in the fiscal year of 2011 or maybe if were lucky spring 2011.

Ok, a few things I need to address. First... Its fine about disagreeing but you are just being a pretentious a-hole.
And as I said before those systems are already being made. And from past experience we should all know the time between TES games is extensive, and not to forget that other games just came out such as Fallout New Vegas, and yes I am aware they brought in an outside company to make it, maybe to make room for TESV? Im not sure.

But still, why make a game for the Xbox 360 and PS3 when, even though it will make a nice little profit, will be obselete sooner than it should be for it to go on in sales.
I mean, if I know that in the next 4 years the system for which I have designed my game has gone obselete i would wait a little bit so that the sales go on longer

Its all about marketing. And below this line, i will post every link i can get about PS4 and Xbox 720, so if you need any more proof.. KGB, ChaCha, Google, Bing, Ask, AskJeeves, Search. Ok, search engines.

http://www.businessinsider.com/will-the-xbox-720-ps4-and-wii-2-come-out-in-2010-01
Ok, there are more but Im tired of CTRL V and CTRL C

But the point is, there is tons of speculation about it even being released in 2010, so once again. Why release it before hand and just have it go obselete before reaching the point where its sales arent getting a good profit? Its like hitting a baseball really nice and far only to have someone catch it, so much potential only to be proven pointless.

Also, I didnt say "PC users only use PC to cheat" I said "Only to mod and for console uses." Generalizing is changing the point, other than that there is no reason to since it just causes stress due to lag.

A lot of the people against my point are thinking I am saying that Bethesda "Couldnt" or "Wouldnt" release it for Xbox 360

It would not be that hard to release it for Xbox 360, but once again in the marketting sense with all these new systems in close speculation with the following years why waste all that potentials when people will be using a different system?!

Think "Market" dont think "Productability"
Do that and you should easily see what I am saying

How the hell do you expect Bethesda to stay afloat if they're not releasing games? Do you think they're running some kind of underground counterfeit money scandal?

Ok, Not releasing new games? They are releasing a game as we speak.
Fallout New Vegas ring a bell? And believe me that is going to give a lot of money. Fallout 3 itself being the first of its kind already brought the old fallout fans to the market. Not to mention the lack of RPS games out there. Well, freedom based RPS, not those linear storyline BS games.
And Fallout New Vegas has been in an intense stage of impatience of the fans ever since it was even hinted at. They ARE making new games, TES is NOT their only gameline, look at the homepage of the forums buddy, see all those things called links? They are for different series than TES that Bethesda has the rights to.

So stop thinking that 2007 Oblivion is the most recent game they have made, they are making new games whether or not its TES.

You guys need to realize that E3 is a Production event (possibly wrong choice of words there :P) and that TES V will undoubtably NOT be announced at it. QUAKECON is the most likely suspect since it as a developer event and in this case Bethesda is a DEVELOPER.

You obviously did not understand what has recently happened in the gamng world. Kinect is coming along with the NEW 250GB SLIM/SHORT XBOX 360!!! DUDE!!! COME ON!!! I have no doubt that the next Xbox will be out after 2013 and also no doubt that TES V will be announced far before the next gen consoles will be announced.

I am also ENTIRELY CONFIDENT that the TES games from now on will be on the consoles (not wii).

The cs isn't cheating - the ~ also has function beyond cheating - it's an homage to the table-tops and essential to the series and the longevity of the rpg. The first cs was released with that intent, but you know better.

Sorry, while they may be in development, they are not in production (English isn't my first language of course, but I do think I'm correct). And do you realize how long it takes to develop a console? It's ridiculous. You have no idea when the next consoles will be released.

Eh, and how do you know it hasn't been worked on for quite a while? Most people here agree it has.

I personally believe it will be for the 360, the PS3, and the PC, though I can't say I'm certain.

Dude he was just joking.
OT:I imagine, the same as OB, released on PS3, X360, and PC. Btw, doesn't a Wii version of TES sound really...odd?

It does, especially since Todd made his opinion about the Wii clear. He believes it is a kid's toy.

Umm, no. If anything it would be for the Xbox 720, its coming out soon and TESV hasnt even been discussed yet.

Also, PC is a big problem for anygame. For 1, it crashes 1000% more than any other way to play games. For 2, you need a certain amount of ram and even when you do it lags like f---ing hell! And also it is mainly used for MODS and CONSOLE

Its for cheating basically, other than that why get it for the pc? XBOX almost never lags unless you do something stupid like A. Scratch your disk or B. Dupe a shield 2000 times with the scroll glitch.

EDIT:
Also, sony said they are making a PS4, and XBOX 720 is coming out soon, in 2011-2012, and Microsoft and Apple JUST ANNOUNCED they are in-fact, making the PC2, yes. The second PC EVER, because there has only been 1.

Oh and nintendo said they are making Wii2, its going to be named "Us" lol, thats a joke. But its going to be made

so the things you just listed are already outdated.

i have had one blue screen of death in the last 7 or 8 years and that was an asus driver issue, the only other problem i had was overclocking my GPU waaay to much and frying it, that however was my boneheaded move not the hardwares fault. from perusing through any number of xbox sites i can definitely tell you that people who understand basic maintenance on a computer have far fewer issues than the constant red rings of death that xbox users keep complaining about. some xbox users our on their third or fourth consoles. that is just pathetic.

even a mid range pc today will run a engine hog like crysis with zero lag. i ran crysis max settings (for dx9) on my 8800GT card with no stutter or lag, and that card is 2 years old now. oblivion with all graphics mods and tons of other mods runs much smoother on my setup than on the 360. same with fallout 3. and farcry 2 looked like crap on the 360 and doesnt run nearly as well as on my rig

i certainly hope that it gets delayed for the xbox 720 and the ps4 since i dont want another oblivion with nerfed graphics and physics and no descent shadow system.

Ok. The short answer is TESV is not officially announced, or even verified to be in development currently, so no one knows what platforms will be available at that time. PC is the only definite.

The long answer is that TESV can reasonably be expected on the "release-current" Microsoft and Sony consoles as well.

The very long answer is that TES V: Skyrim will be a traditional BGS PC/360/PS3 release because it's coming that soon.

Why even make the game for the pc? The pc users are the ones who complain all the time.

Considering that a number of those complaints are about catering to consoles...

Also, PC is a big problem for anygame. For 1, it crashes 1000% more than any other way to play games. For 2, you need a certain amount of ram and even when you do it lags like f---ing hell! And also it is mainly used for MODS and CONSOLE

Maybe your PC does, but not everyone has a terrible computer, you need to stop judging every computer by the standards of your own hardware. With a highend PC, not only can very demanding games be ran on high settings without lag, but they tend to have superior hardware to what any console has, something games tend not to take advantage of very well if the developers insist on designing the game for consoles first.

And you need to stop making stupid, unfounded generalizations, i can think of a number of reasons why I might choose to play the PC version of a game over the console version, other than mods (Which are often reason enough, and no, they're NOT cheating, actually some mods make the game harder.) The control interface is one reason, some games simply play better on the mouse and keyboard setup, such as first person shooters and games with a similar control setup (Which generally includes the Elder Scrolls.) because it's easier to aim precisely with a mouse than a controller, real time strategy games are also a genre I can hardly imagine playing on consoles, especially if they're fairly complex ones.

But as to the Elder Scrolls V, if it's being made, I find it highly unlikely that it won't be multiplatform, that seems to be the usual way developers like to go now, probably because it allows for a bigger potential market, and mostly, it will be developed with that in mind from the start. Which probably means that once again PC players will need to suffer console-oriented interfaces, but that's life, now that Bethesda has reached into the console market, I certainly don't expect them to back out just to appease the PC players. So will it be released for the current generation of consoles, or the next? I'm not really sure, I suppose it depends on whether they're likely to be ready for its coming or not, but if we assume that it is in development and this began either before or shortly after Fallout 3's release, I wouldn't bet on it being released on any consoles except PS3 and Xbox 360, so if I had to make a guess, I'd say the platforms will be PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Here is my take:
If TESV is released on the current generation of hardware, it will be a multi-platform release on PC/360/PS3.

If TESV is released on the next generation of hardware, it will be PC only (maybe 1 console). The reason for this is that console hardware runs in cycles and the upcoming cycle is going to resemble the Wii (i.e. designed for a younger crowd with a lot of "family" focus). There may be one developer who decides to buck the trend and make a high end console, but the smart money says that Nintendo's Wii is going to be the model of the next generation, especially since M$ and $ony not only lost money on every unit they sold this generation, but were also badly outsold by a (technologically) inferior product.

I strongly recommend that if you love console gaming, you keep your 360 or PS3 in good condition as you will be disappointed in their successors.
