TESV: Why couldn't it have been Elsweyr?

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 7:27 am

I think people often overlook the importance of LOCATION in the context of these games, and the impact those places and more specifically those people which occupy them have on the depth and quality of associated lore. In Morrowind, the lore was rich and mystical as the Dunmer people that lived there:

"Conventional teachings of the Tribunal Temple hold that the Tribunal were 'mortal guardians of Morrowind who walked the earth, defeated the Dunmer's greatest enemies, the Nords and the Dwarves, and achieved divine substance through superhuman discipline and virtue and supernatural wisdom and insight. Like loving ancestors, they guard and counsel their followers'." http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Vehk

Even Elsweyr with its Moonsugar plantations, vast deserts, and fertile oasis, would have been a prefered locale to Skyrim, where the climate is as cold as the hearts of it's war-obsessed people. "A vast ocean two feet deep" might as well describe their reverence for materialism and battle prowess, and complete abandonment of the matters of the mind.

How could any self-respecting sophist ever live there?

I just can't get behind the Nords, or the Dwarves for that matter. Everything they do seems against everything I value. If I had to describe them in one word, it would be: RUDE! Rude, crude, lewd, and subdued, and how they overcompensate... It's offensive!

Nothing is sacred to a Nord, except, it seems, himself!

The beauty is in diversity. We will hopefully visit Elsweyr in the future too.

Why can't TES:IV be Elsewhere? Or Hammerfell? I'm pretty sure the series will only end after they do ALL the regions, and then they'll have to come up with a way to re-invent the world.

Seriously though, TES V could've taken place anywhere. Skyrim was bound to happen one time or another and I think it worked out pretty well having come out when it did.

Anyway from what I've seen the majority of this forum would like to see the next TES game take place in Elsweyr (myself included) so we've all still got our fingers crossed for next time.

Why can't TES:IV be Elsewhere?
That's Elsweyr. They may be pronounced the same, but they are not spelled the same.

Ultimately I'm looking forward to that too, but when they do it I don't want technology holding them back, so that's why I think they should put it off a bit longer. : )

If you followed Skyrim's pre-release marketing, you'd notice that Bethesda tries to appeal the series more to audience who would find stuff like a feline people to be dorky and stupid. I think it's extremely unlikely we'll ever see a TES with a beast race as the main setting as it would be deemed by the publisher as unattractive. TES6 will most likely be another boring human province like Hammerfell

I am a beast races fan and I'd love to see TES go in Black Marsh,
BUT
Unfortunately I think Bethesda is not yet ready for such a task. Look at Khajiit and Argonian as they are portrayed in SKyrim. Bethesda is treating the beast races like comic races and nothing more. They're not taking them seriously and that's what they need to do before they can make a truly awesome game based on Argonian and Khajiit people. We all know these races are more than petty thieves and assassins. There's more appeal in their culture, beliefs and social organization.

Until Bethesda is willing to work harder on beast races to give them more important and memorable npcs with more relevance in the story and politics balance, and more weight as distinct races ( beastly bodies and animations) I think a possible game in Black Marsh or Elsweyr would suffer greatly from banolity and would disappoint a lot of fans.

All I can say is: Tauren, Worgen, Goblin, Troll, Orc!

EDIT: Tauren, Tauren, Tauren!

i'd rather play in a harsh barbaric land then a happy cat land full of cat people sniffing too much catnip and singing songs of meow mix in the taverns

if they ever make a elsweyr game, i will personally murder all those puss in boots knockoffs :)

Personally I think the next game will be Elsweyr AND valenwood. Think it will finish off Tameriel then move somewhere else previously unknown. Maybe that game will play host to newcomers landing on the southern shores.

That is all well and good. But for me, it isn't a racial thing. As I attempted to describe, it is how this translates into lore.

A cold race of barbarians simply don't have much in the way of interesting, intellectual, and thought-provoking lore.

Nords are more or less WYSIWYG: What you see is what you get. That to me is just boring as hell.

Now THAT would be awesome! Especially if they tapped into the whole Avatar meme for Valenwood...

Plus I see more of the traditionalist Dunmer, and their far more interesting lore, moving on to these places rather than settling down in the spiritual doldrums of Skyrim.

A return to the alien culture of the peoples of Morrowind would be a welcome breath of life into the genre.

I agree that the beast races deserve more work but that shouldn't be an excuse for not doing it, that should be a motivation. I believe Cyrodiil and Skyrim have depleted the amount of generic fantasy this series can take before they should move to the beast races lands for a change. Now it's time for a more daring cultural approach and build an alien experience again like they did with Morrowind.

They have definitely built up the mystique surrounding the Khajiit in this game. I don't think it will be too long before we see a game in Elsweyr.

They haven't figured out what to call it yet. They got rid of Elsweyr, but "TES VIII: Pelletine and Anequina" isn't going to look so good on a game box.

I wonder if they might've gone overboard on making up types of Khajiit, though. Because there's like, over a dozen, which is easy to say in a book but if we went there they'd have to make all that. I guess only around 6-10 would be playable, and some of those are only "like this other one, but bigger/smaller" so that'd simplify it somewhat.

You are a perfect example of a person who has fallen victim to the common notion that the Khajiit are dorky cat people that were created to satisfy the tastes of furry and anime lovers. I pity you.

The khajiit dont have intellectual convo so i imagine their lore and quests won't have any more substance or be more thought provoking then skyrim. This one gets annoyed when khajiit speak this way in 3rd person...a whole game of this would be torture.

Also the nords dont suffer from their own lore, they suffer from bad story telling and dialogue like every other TES game...skyrim is full of rich history and lore that doesnt get imagined well by bethesda

Then again, it would be a lot easier for them to make a game set in an Elven province. Summerset or Valenwood wouldn't surprise me.

Story reasons i suppose, plus tes puts a pretty big focus on the nords. Plus it would be hard to put the issue of talos in the focus of the khajjit. That said i would love to find out more about the void nights of elsweyr,

I think they should start all over with The Elder Scrolls and insted of calling it "TES IV Oblivion", "TES V Skyrim" they could just call it The Elder Scrolls and start with one place such as Morrowind and release every 1-3 years a new expansion that is Skyrim, Elsweyr, etc. And keep updating the game, patching up.

Or something like in WoW, where a quest-line unlocks a "Caverns of Time" equivalent, that would let you revisit the older iterations, perhaps at multiple lore-relevant periods of their history, even re-living the events of previous titles in a new and interesting way.

I really hope they do something like that for Morrowind in a future DLC, as Skyrim has such an awesome engine for it
