Texture Overhaul Questions

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 10:16 am

Currently I am using bomrets texture packs and corepc's vibrant textures for my game. I have used QTP3redimized before and just tried the ones I'm using. Does anyone know if one or the other gives less of a "hit" to graphics performance? Either tend to load more resources? Game is quite stable and about only crashes I experience are the "maxed out" memory ones. IIRC I was able to play for around 2 to 3 hours easily with QTP3 and now it seems I only am getting around 45 mins to an hour before. Side note, I've also added in Elsweyr mods since changing to bomrets and vibrant and don't know if this could also be contributing. Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.

CorePC's textures are the same size as those of vanilla Oblivion; therefore, it does not take nearly as much VRAM to run as QTP3R. QTP3R is suited for 512MB+ graphics cards. You made a downgrade (in size, not quality) with your texture packs, so I would look into other aspects of your modified setup.

That message would have nothing to do with your video card or VRAM. That would be a physical RAM error message, so there's no point in looking at your graphics mods for a solution. Something else is wrong as graphics have very little impact on your physical RAM, only on your VRAM. It could be an indication of a hardware problem as it's very rare to be running out of memory playing Oblivion, even with a heavily modded setup.

"very rare to be running out of memory playing Oblivion" <-- memory = VRAM here

Edit: 2-3 hours is a more normal limit (largely set by Oblivion hitting its loaned, not VRAM, memory limit.)
