I've updated the first post, I think it's worth reading (but I would :P), since it's basically a condensed version of the entire thread.
Where this thread is a tomato, the first post is tomato puree - y'know, that concentrated stuff that comes in the metal tubes...

I wonder if it comes in metal tubes all over the world... *ponder*

Um, sorry 'bout that. Got puree on the mind at the moment, just check the first post, 'k? ;)

Ooh, good to see you again! Hope you've been having a good time over the holidays.

In the US we most often see tomato paste in very small cans, but tubes are way better.

Because I was foolish enough not to go read the update first post yet, I am not sure if you have seen/included skydye's new thread with texturing tips. That should come in handy for some folks.

Canned tomato puree?
How very, very bizarre. I guess we learn something new every day. o.o

This thread certainly deserves a bump after SkyDye's amazing contribution.

As for me, I've been looking through my computer and organising some of my stuff, and as a result I have gathered 44 decent source photographs for Tree Bark, which I will be uploading over the process of the night and editing into this post as I do so.
To start with, here are the first dozen... The others are much the same in terms of quality. I know they're not perfect but I try my best. ^_^

Great stuff. You have my permission to handle anything I've made and reproduce any information in any other thread. Unfortunately I'm under a license agree on my new textures but not the stuff already released. So I can only share one's not made for that Site. So making textures here would be double my work load. Please explain this if ever asked.

Just a bit of a bump here.
I hope it's been long enough to justify.

Legalities:
It's easy to do google searches for photo and texture searches. But it's not OK to use the results of such searches in other work without making sure it's OK. No matter how tempting that photo might be, if there's no OK's on using it, it's not OK to use. Including phrases like "creative commons", "OK to use", "public domain", and such makes it easier to narrow down a search.

"Creative commons" by itself is confusing (and is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_Commons#Criticism); do you mean "attribution only", "no commercial use", "no derivative works", ...? "OK to use", unless clarified, is even more ambiguous; "ok to use" where, how, ...? "Public domain" is quite simple: you revoke all rights (except possibly moral rights, which may be irrevocable).

If you really want to allow "free use" of your textures, I'd suggest something like a modified BSD license with conditions of attribution (which is a moral right anyway), and that the filename must be unique... or something

A creative work is said to be in the public domain if there are no laws which restrict its use by the public at large. For instance, a work may be in the public domain if no laws establish proprietary rights over the work, or if the work or its subject matter are specifically excluded from existing laws.

Because proprietary rights are founded in national laws, an item may be public domain in one jurisdiction but not another. For instance, some works of literature are public domain in the United States but not in the European Union and vice versa.

Signed and dated, wasn't aware of the STRINGENT  copyright laws applying to just pictures that abound in the world. Awesome downloads! Will be modifying soon, thanks for bumping this Earth_Worm.

Well, the purpose of this thread isn't really to discuss copyright law, though it's obviously relevant; in the world of the internet though, these kinds of discussion can get sticky. Most sites linked in this thread have published allowances on the usage of their materials, so between that and your own code of ethics you ought to be able to judge the validity of whatever actions you take with the materials you find; 'TreeSprite's rules of thumb I think are sufficient for the purposes of this thread, and for amateur modding in general. :)
If I wanted a copyright discussion, I'd just mention to people that Bethesda owns all mods. Y'know, that ol' chestnut. :P

I'm glad that it's useful Dragon_Lance. :)

I have not had the opportunity to peruse the whole thread as of yet- so forgive my ignorance, but if I were to release some DDS textures that are only edited to a certain extent (they were meant for my game- but they were ones I deemed out of place, and so stopped short of editing them to perfection- way short) would the texturers union want them- and if yes. what is a good site for hosting such files (other then the obvious such as PES)? BTW, IDK what your rules are for joining said union- but if I was to join any unions, a Morrowind Texture Union seems about perfect for the likes of me.

Oops. Heheh. ^^;;
It's not a union in the sense of something you join, when I made it I was thinking more along the lines of Texturers uniting their skills and resources.

Yes, any sort of resource that other people can use to make their own textures, or use in improving their ability is very welcome and I'll appreciate it. :)
The idea is that all of the resources and skills in the community are united, so anything which furthers that cause is wonderful. :)

I usually put my photos and resources up on http://abload.de, which I find to be a very valuable site. :)
Other than that, for formats which aren't standard web images I only really know of temporary sites like Yousendit or Yacoby's TES uploading resource, which are valuable for their purpose. Perhaps someone else can provide some help on permanent locations?

Since you're interested in texturing, perhaps you could share some tips in SkyDye's http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=799551&hl= thread?
It's in the Oblivion forums because SkyDye doesn't have the time to maintain two threads, one for each forum, but a lot of the concepts are directly transferable. :)

Sure- I can look in on that thread from time to time- it would be better then my randomly posting tidbits here and there in random threads. I have to organize all those textures I will relz- then I will post some here- might take up to a week for me to get it together.

if your camera has a black and white picture mode, think alpha/glow/bump etc... color images you would never think of using in the game can yield very useful map textures. low contrast = subtle, high contrast = not subtle. it might even be possible to use an image like this to make height maps for the landgenerator applications.

I posted a suggestion in another thread about using a scanner instead of a camera- the first advantage as I posted in that other thread is that the results are better then Photo quality- the second advantage I failed to mention is that high contrast areas (I.E Shadowy Areas that make bad looking mips) are nonexistent- to get similar results you would need a very high powered flash- although it does not drastically desaturate the scanned image either. Next time I post such a hint I promise to do it in the other- proper thread but I couldn't resist repsonding to this comment.

Hrm. My real concern is with "no derivative works" terms; can you crop it, recolour it, make a model which uses it, ...?

People here have had their works used in a way they do not approve of, and are rightfully angry; as such, they have started disallowing any use of their works, which is less than ideal (ideally, we would have lots of resources to use, and people would get the credit they deserve).

It's been a while since I've seen any activity in this thread, but over the weekend I went on a trip and took a lot of pics which could make good texture sources.

Link to album in first post, same rules apply. :)
