Texturer's Union

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 12:36 pm

Do the 'involved parties' mind if I post the two quotes (directly below) in the other Texturer's Union threads? They have been slightly altered (I merged AnOldFriend and my responses), so you might want to read through them. I'll post them as 'anonymous' quotes unless you prefer it otherwise.
It might make interesting reading for people who don't know about linking layers. :)
I thought I'd better ask before I posted it elsewhere, just in case there were any objections to my alterations to the text. :grad:

Is there a way (in adobe PS CS2) to "link" 2 separate textures so when you use free transform on one the other is also changed in exactly the same way?

Well if you're just trying to resize the entire texture and the [other texture] at once just [put the two textures into the same canvas/workspace and] link both layers on the right hand side [using the togglebox beside the visibility toggle in the layers panel] and then transform.

If you want to transform a selected area I don't think linking them will work. For example, you can't select an area of the canvas with the lasso tool and transform both layers at the same time as far as I am aware. Likewise, free transforming two linked layers won't change them in the exact same way if the two textures are different sizes from each other (I think this is the case even if they have the same aspect ratio).

Otherwise you could take a note of the values in the toolbar at the top when in free transform mode - even where the textures are different sizes, using the same values to transform them should result in the changes being identical (at least to 2 d.p.), this will not work if they've got different aspect ratios though,

If there is any way to actually link two separate canvases we don't know it.

I've posted the tattoo link in the other threads Westly, cheers for that. ;).
I don't think that place has been linked to yet Doc, though I may be mistaken. I'll spread the link around, thanks. :)

It's fine to quote me..and the suggestion worked fine BTW..not a huge amount of help when it came time to start cutting things up and liquifying them to fit but at least it was nice to get both textures to the same starting point anyhow  Actually if I'd entered the right term into ps help/search I wouldn't have needed to post..the info was in there..it's just sometimes hard to find exactly what you want :embarrased:

In my experience, help files for most applications are woefully inept (with a few exceptions). They're usually the last place I think to look for anything actually useful.
It's nice to know that Photoshop is one of the exceptions.

Edit: Thanks HarborGolfer and AnOldFriend. The Q&A has been shared among the threads. :hehe:

Thank you! Although it's worth noting that this tut is for PSP9. PSP8 does not have the displacement map feature (or, at least, not under "Effects->Distortion Effects"). I'll keep looking through my version of PSP to see if I find it elsewhere, but that feature might not have been introduced until PSP9.

I have recently started thinking about stained glass for one of my textureing projects, I saw a beautiful fireplace screen in a magazine and am now trying to make a copy of it (not the screen, but the motif) for that set, but it got me to thinking about OTHER things, such as stained glass textures (the actual glass) and so I googled it. That led to Stained Glass PATTERNS, which, for people like me who can't free hand draw (with the computer) are a Godsend. I have actually found quite a few sites that offer free stained glass patterns for personal and non commercial use (and some for commercial use as long as you don't sell the pattern itself, just what you make with it). I have decided to use some of these for my personal use in the game and share them with you (as they were talking about making actual stained glass items to hang around your house) I haven't actually done the items I plan to make using these, but I will share the sites I have gotten the patterns from so anyone who wants to make their own can. The following is a list of sites that I have downloaded patterns off of. Some of these also have links to OTHER places to get free patterns. Also, another thing to note. Many of these come in PDF format, so you have to get the texture from there to your image editing program, it usually isn't that hard (Acrobat does have a snap shot function that works great for me) but some of them are also broken up into many different pages, (I have found two like this, one easy to put together, the other needing some cosmetic stuff done to make it look okay, not much though) so just be aware that they won't all be jpgs or gifs or even pngs.

http://annabelleglass.tripod.com/id10.html
http://www.alpineglass.com/shop/free-stained-glass-patterns/7 - I think that this might be the one that has the patterns broken up, either that or ascadian, but there might be other sites that do the same.

And so far those are all the pattern sites I have managed to go to as I got side tracked by http://www.lincolnglass.com/index.cfm?page=cat_home&ALTCat=944&viewCat=918,918 which is Lincoln Stained Glass, a supplier of glass products such as stained glass. They have some absolutely gorgeous pictures of actual stained glass that I have been downloading to use as textures (I had basically ONE glass texture and it was clear) This is a wholesaler's site, so they don't exactly say whether the pics are free use or not, so I will leave it up to you to decide whether or not you want to use them.

Last, here is the site that I got all the other pattern links from: http://downeaststainedglass.com/freestainedglasspatterns.html They themselves only have one free pattern (which was misleading to me as I thought htye would have tons of them) but they do havea list of other stained glass sites that offer free patterns, not all the links work, and I am only about halfway through, and I didn't list all theones I have went through either, just the ones that I personally downloaded stuff from.

So, I hope you enjoy :D

I cannot thank you enough. I LOVE stained glass.

no problem, I love it too, but like I said, I can't make stained glass patterns to save my soul or even computer, so I wanted some good patterns, so set out to find some, then I started thinking that I also needed some nice glass pieces and Bryss Phoenix suggested looking at wholesalers sites for pics, so I did, I have been downloading glass pics for several days now :D.

I am really hopeing to see some pretty stuff from other people as well, I mainly plan to do lanterns (along with the themed set I was talking about from the fireplace screen motif) as I don't really want to try to do the actual windows or doors and there isn't much else that I have seen that would look good with stained glass (and only one lantern at that, the others that would be nice to use maps the texture a different way on each face of the lantern so one time it will be right side up, the next turned 90 degress, the next 180 etc...) I have hopes for one or two more items (I Might even do a couple of windows) but don't hold your breath ;)

anyway, glad you liked this offering.

I've always been toying with the idea of making some foliage models, but thought that I don't really have enough different resources at hand to have the variety that I'd want to go for.

I have been digging around in pattern sites (FINALLY downloaded the images I wanted from Lincoln Glass) and found the Spectrum website, and what a find that is. Spectrum seems to be one of the leading manufacturers of glass and many of the patterns found on other sites are in fact Spectrum patterns.

Here is the http://www.spectrumglass.com/PatSet.html to the Spectrum Free Pattern site. They also have a link to the Glass Eye program, if someone downloads it, could they let me know what exactly it does. I would like to know if you can actually MAKE patterns and how easy it is, can you give it a picture and it makes a stained glass pattern out of it or do you have to draw it or whatever. Since it is a trial version I don't want to download it and find out that it doesn't do what I really want it (since it resizes patterns it might have been nice to have to resize the patterns without distortion, but since it will expire after 30 days, I don't plan to download it unless I know I can make the types of patterns I would like to see more of) Now for the actual patterns, there are a LOT, the frame to the left has a drop down menu of the sets and the links in that frame also go to some various patterns that might be useful to make larger stained glass stuff.

BUT, now for the REAL reason I posted. If it was just for those patterns I wouldn't have because they can be found on a LOT of other websites and I am sure people would have found them sooner or later, but THIS is a real find, at least for me. Here is a direct quote from the Spectrum Site:
You are welcome to download the digital images of Spectrum Glass products and use them in your graphic design, stained glass design, or other application. When you use the images as examples of or promotions of sheet glass, we ask that you identify the images as Spectrum products. If the images are incorporated into a graphic design, they need not be identified.
This permission applies to Spectrum's product images only, and NOT to any Gallery image, logo, or other image found on the Spectrum site.

If you wish to download all product images, or groups of images, the chore will be much simplified by using our FTP (file transfer protocol) site, established for your convenience.

And on this http://www.spectrumglass.com/Pages/FTPinsts.html there is a link to the FTP site that contains all the images.

Free to use Stained Glass images, and most of the beautiful, as far as I can tell all of them about 435x435 in size, separated in categories with a numbering system that makes it easy to use with thier patterns? A dream come true for me:D.

Okay, here is the first set of stained glass stuff I promised. I have created a thread just for it, http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=749961, please do any replying in that thread. This is a set of 20 lanterns. There will be more on the way. As of right now, there are two meshes I plan to use, the lantern, and one Oom Fooyat made for me. I have looked at the windows for the various tilesets, and I am afraid that the stained glass just doesn't look good on them :(

Everything about the mod is in the other thread, just throught I would give a heads up here and bump this thread to the front ;)

A bump for a question..

In my old PS ver 6.0 I was able to rotate the calligraphy brushes. This was quite extremely handy when you wanted an odd shaped brush to dig into a corner or align with the edge of an arc to draw or erase something. PS CS 2 has the same brushes but not the rotate option. Is there a plugin that adds the feature? Is there one that adds it for ALL the brushsets? That would be incredibly handy...especially when working with odd shaped alpha channels for some clothes items.

I use Photoshop CS and the feature is present, it would be pretty unusual for them to remove it for the next version.
Chances are that it's just in a different place than it was for 6.0.

Give me a minute and I'll get a few screens to illustrate where it is, and hopefully it'll help. :)
Hopefully, the feature really is still present.

That's exactly what I was after..thanks :goodjob:

In ver 6.0 the option showed up as a 3rd line right in the brush menu which I have open here in CS2..

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v644/harborgolfer/general/cscalig.jpg

looks like they expanded the way it works..very nice of those photoshop people :) A couple other things which were present in 6 I've had to add to CS 2 as plugins..that's why I wondered about this.

Great. ^^
Glad it worked; hopefully there's a few even more useful features in that big brush config. menu thingy. :D

Out of curiosity though, what were the features that were removed since v6.0?

This one..in the filter menu which allows you to superimpose something on the outside of a sphere and alter the perspective..slightly useful for centering some face pics taken at a bit of an angle..it was in 6 but not CS2 till I added it..
