Textures are absolutely horrendous

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 4:28 am

I'm a little embarrased by bethesda , such great game concept makers , concept art etc. But they really seem to lack in the technical department.

But they have the best marketers. I mean, stencils in the streets of Sydney? I was in Manhatten today and every bus and cab had Skyrim on it.

Somebody's on a console.

Not even, more like somebody needs glasses.

You are correct sort of.. some textures are horrendous. It's not that all are.. it's that there are enough that some make your eyes go googly. Anyone who doesn't think so, on any system, run to Windhelm and take a gander at those tombstones. Compared with the crisp textures of the tree and NPC's they do look downright horrendous. It's the texture offset that bothers me on some items. Like the wood side tables. Nice crisp looking framework.. blurry/muddy body.

What are you talking about?

The issue is even WORSE on PC.

The "high res" textures PC users get are barely any different, and some aren't even touched at all. This makes it much worse since we are staring right at the monitor. When I walked into Whiterun for the first time I died a little inside.

Bethesda completely screwed the PC community with Skyrim.
Have you even seen the UI?

They count on the modding community to fix their errors. Just sad. All I can say is, please release the Dev Tools as soon as possible. I need the graphical mods ASAP.

To be honest I don't see why so many people hate the UI. Even if it was designed for consoles, its very easy to use and works fine for me.

Skyrim isn't GROUNDBREAKING, but it certainly isn't HORRENDOUS.

It's a solid 8.5/10 in the graphics department.

I'm on the 360 WITH it installed, and game still looks beautiful, sure up close the textures are rough, but it's not a big deal. Not like I spend my time looking at one object for 5 minutes observing it. What stuns me is the sky, both the Aurora Borealis and the moons are stunning.

I think the game looks awesome, but any idiot should be able to see the low res textures.

Some ground textures are a little sub-par when observed up close. But taken as a whole, Skyrim is beautiful. So get your nose out of the dirt and gaze towards the Aurora Borealis :)

On the PC with the texture settings at High, the quality of them varies. http://i.imgur.com/2zOpO.jpg, the bread, bucket, and ingot have some pretty nice textures, but the table's textures are horrible.

Nope. Ill take it you never saw one of the many "I installed to the HDD and now the textures svck" threads.

Anyway, on PC Ill see things like Birth Stones having great textures. Then see a guys shirt that looks like the strings are super pixelated. While anothers attire will be perfectly textured. Weird, but I don't really care about graphics.

The difference between the PC and 360 version is night and day.

I can't play the game for more than 5 minutes and the textures start disappearing; or, everything turns a purplish pink color. The trees are blocked out and black and there are purplish pink and black holes galore. In addition, Once I have fast traveled to an area, I can't do it a second time, because at the end of the load time of fast traveling it immediately crashes to the desktop. And, I have done everything there is to do on my PC on my end. And, it isn't my computer. Between FNV, FO3 and DA:O I probably have 250 mods --many of them are Hi-Res HD textures- combined added to those games and my computer works just fine. DA:O alone has 115 mods attached to it and it very rarely crashes; and, I can play for over ten hours straight without problem.

Who cares how the texture of a tree or bush looks up close. Don't go "tree hugging" and you won't have an issue. I have the game on highest settings and it looks amazing. When looking at a forest from far off or from the road, the game looks just brilliant.

I can't wait for Qarl to make a texture mod for Skyrim, some textures are god awful (such as the ground texture in many caves). It is more noticeable once you install the Enhanced Water mod, when the water looks like it's from Crysis while the rest looks sub-par. Overall the game looks great thanks to a strong art direction, but art can only take you so far, there needs to be some technical prowess as well.

I installed to my 360 hard drive as usual to save the damned thing sounding like a helicopter when I play... and got that damned texture bug. Some of the character textures in Dawnstar are absolutely horrible now.

Thing is I have an ebony helmet with the most detailed pattern on it. Seems like only some of the textures are glitched and it doesn't actually interfere with the gameplay. It's the random crashes that does that.

Also I wonder if the texture problem is what leads to the loading screen that has normally got a random character or model showing going wonky and not showing anything but a smokey black background.

Somebody's on a console.

They're low res on the PC as well, just not as low res.

Why spend an extra $10 million on making awesome textures, when you will still make $500 million on the game in the first week, and have fanbots defend your crappy textures? Seriously, why would you spend the extra money?

It doesn't cost more to "make" high res textures, as they're already made, it just means the download/install size will be a lot larger - which doesn't concern most PC users. They make the textures high res to begin with then they compress/lessen the quality to make the release a certain size/require a certain amount of vram.

It's too bad Bethesda never care even an ounce to lift so much as a finger for the PC crowd.

People get way too hung up on graphics in games today. I like a pretty game as much as the next person, but I really have too much to do in this game to be bothered looking at a blade of grass, a brick, or a piece of rock with a magnifying glass to see if i can find out the resolution of their texture mapping is at.

Ehh try 6.5 or 7. anything above that is pushing it.

Old Oblivion with Qarls Texture pack looks epic compared to the new ones.

Meh.

Im content.

http://i.imgur.com/ynlop.jpg, and it's also quite common in the game. I'm hoping that it was only a mistake that got overlooked before release because textures like that shouldn't be in a 2011 console game, on PC it's just laughable.

I am playing on a PC and just upgraded to a 6950 from a 5770 for to get the best out of this game at a reasonable price. I am playing on Ultra High. The first thing I fell in love with was the rivers and water falls they look realistic. I like the sky and characters , the dungeons so far ( I have visited about 5 ) are light years ahead of Oblivion. So far if I have one complaint about the Graphics it is when looking at things in the distance sometimes they look so plain as compared to the rest of the graphics and I find this a distraction but apart from this I have no complaints I will live with the odd short comings in the graphics because it is a lot better than a game with unbelievable graphics and all you can do in it is follow a set path.
