Textures in BSA-File don't appear in my game

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 8:57 pm

I have downloaded connary's texture replacer packed in a BSA file.
.
I registered it correctly.
.
'TryArchiveFirst' is set to 0 in the morrowind.ini.
.
But most of the textures don't appear in my game.
.
Every now and then there's a replaced ground texture or door.
.
For example the dunmer stronghold is original except for the door.
.
How can it be?
.
I'm trying this with a vanilla installation.

Is there anything in your Data Files\Textures folder? Everything in there will overwrite anything in the BSAs

It's empty except for '_land_default.tga'.

I would suggest double checking the ini file, and checking for it in the [Archives] entry. the Morrowind.bsa is added by default (I believe), all subsequent ones have to explicitly be added.

Beyond that, unless it's a load order issue based on which BSA it should look to first, it would go to your current local directory first. I would think it goes from last to first, allowing updates to propagate from later games/patches, but I am guessing at that.

'Archives' and 'Game Files' from the ini:

[Archives]
Archive 0=Tribunal.bsa
Archive 1=Bloodmoon.bsa
Archive 2=Connary's BSA v2.bsa

[Game Files]
GameFile0=Bloodmoon.esm
GameFile1=Morrowind.esm
GameFile2=Tribunal.esm

I think i will try a fresh installation.

Did a fresh installation with the same result.
.
Installed it on my laptop (WinXP), doesn't worked either.
.
But if i unpack the bsa everything is fine.
.
Strange. Don't know what i'm doing wrong.
.
I would prefer to use the bsa.

Something to try, remove spaces and all types of punctuation, then update the ini file and try that.

Connary's BSA v2.bsa => ConnarysBSAv2.bsa
or
Connary's BSA v2.bsa => Connarys_BSA_v2.bsa

It could be due to the date stamp on the BSA files if connary's archive is older than Morrowind.bsa in which case Morrowind's default textures are overwriting Connary's, I believe this is one of the problems of downloading the steam version which have much newer datestamps than the cd version.

Below are the date time stamps from my GOTY version, i would suggest checking and changing datestamps if necessary, this is simple to do in Wrye Mash and should solve a bunch of similar problems wiith other mods when load order is important.

Morrowind.esm. 17 July 2002, 15:59:22
Tribunal.esm 26 June 2003, 17:05:06
Bloodmoon.esm 07 July 2003, 14:27:56

Morrowind.bsa 21 June 2002, 14:31:46
Tribunal.bsa 29 October 2002, 19:22:06
Bloodmoon.bsa 01 May 2003, 10:37:30

I'm using the international goty edition.
.
Time stamps:
.
Morrowind.esm - 17.07. 2002, 16:59
Tribunal.esm - 26.06. 2003, 18:05
Bloodmoon.esm - 07.07. 2003, 15:27
.
Morrowind.bsa - 21.06. 2002, 15:31
Tribunal.bsa - 29,10. 2002 20:22
Bloodmoon.bsa - 01.05. 2003, 12:37
.
Connary's BSA v2.bsa - 20.03. 2010, 10:33
.
.
I have now tested this on a third computer with a fresh installation.
.
With the same result.
.
Here are some screenshots.
.
There's not much to see.
.
The few replaced textures are always the same.

It's really a mystery to me.

Connary's textures have worked in those screenshots, so importantly which ones have not ? Cannary made new textures for the land , buildings and creatures, and i believe i am correct in saying he never released any for heads , hair,bodies, clothing, armour and most miscellaneous items and other things, my guess is that the solution to your woes is to install some supplementary replacers targeting the objects that Connary's replacers do not cover.

That's how the unpacked BSA looks like in these locations.

Screenshots aren't good, but you can see the difference.

Using the BSA file buildings for example have vanilla textures.

Is it at all possible you are using the wrong program to pack your BSA? Some of the more recent programs made for Oblivion, Fallout, and Skyrim may unpack MW BSA's just fine, but they may not pack them in a readable format.

This is just a guess, forgive me if I don't know what the heck I'm talking about.

A lot of people have reported problems with .bsa files, theories put forward that the problems with them are due to the game engine being unable to process many, with 1 person once suggesting a maximum of 5 .bsa files, above that then the game engine starts getting confused. Reasons aside, the solution is likely to be to unpack the .bsa and install it as you would any other mod.

I currently have eight bsas that appear to be working right now, which include the three default. I believe they were all packed with the 2003 version of BSApack, but I can't be sure, now.

Other bsa have any models or .esp?
I don't remember what version of bsapack I use to make Connary's bsa, but I strongly recommend you to unpack this bsa and put all textures into textures folder.

The reason i want working BSA files so badly is, because i want to make one of my own of all the mods i always use.
.
I have a lot of Icons/Meshes/Textures replacer and i hoped to package them would decrease load times and make installation and removal of quest mods easier, if these folders remain empty.
.
All this testing has been done to a completely unmodified game, so there's only the Tribunal-, Bloodmoon- and Connary's BSA registered in the Morrowind.ini.
.
And all the fresh installations have been done with an ISO-image i made of my (original) disk. I'm using it for years and never had any problems with it.
.
When i'm back home in a couple of days, i will make a final test with an installation from the disk.
.
I don't expect it to work.

It sounds for all the world to me to be either a defective BSA or not everything in the BSA is pluginless.

I got it via BTB's site. I guess a lot of people are using it, it must be ok. Also, you can unpack it and everything seems to be fine.

I try to write BTB and try to say him about unpacking this bsa, but failed.

My advice: unpack this bsa or re-pack with another bsapacker.

'Archives' and 'Game Files' from the ini:

[Archives]
Archive 0=Tribunal.bsa
Archive 1=Bloodmoon.bsa
Archive 2=Connary's BSA v2.bsa

[Game Files]
GameFile0=Bloodmoon.esm
GameFile1=Morrowind.esm
GameFile2=Tribunal.esm

I think i will try a fresh installation.
Since you have the BSA registered correctly, it's likely the problem lies in that your custom BSA contains assets which have the same names and path as the stock assets. You need to date your custom BSA earlier than the stock Morrowind BSAs so that the versions of the assets it contains will override the stock ones.

Files in the archive inherit the timestamp of the BSA, and Morrowind will only load the first instance of an archived asset based on timestamp.

Any assets not contained in your custom BSA will be taken from the stock archives.

[edit] also make sure that when you are redating the BSA that you change both the created and modified dates.
