Thank You, Bethesda

Post » Sun Dec 11, 2011 10:21 pm

I am a high school English teacher, and I would like to give a random 'thank-you' to Bethesda. Not only have I greatly enjoyed this game (between bouts of grading), I recently started my students reading 'Beowulf,' and the timing could not be better. Thanks to 'Skyrim,' my kids' are latching on to every reference that they can find to mead halls and trolls and names like 'Hrothgar.' The unit is ordinarily a bit of a hard sell, but this year, it is a true pleasure. Thank you for sparking the cultural imagination.

Great book! Nice choice for a good read, I wish I had an English teacher like you my friend. :P

don't subject your students to the [censored] Beowulf movie please. Honestly it did no justice to the book.

Of all the books in High School Lit, this is easily one of my favorites, along with The Oyesey. Ironically, in college we seemed to gravitate towards short excerpts for an expanded variety... hmmmm.

I wish some of my History teachers paid more attention to the Europa Universallis (and Civ) series, or at least referenced them. I hope y'all are still teaching good manners... judging by the forums these days...

EDIT: And to the above, agreed, but the movies never really do the book justice, do they? Better graphics and acting in the head I suppose.

Does good manners include using words like "sir" or "mam?"

The second I started seeing all the Nordic names I immediately went "BEOWULF". The fact I read that in high school made the game more enjoyable too.

The movie wasn't an "adaptation" of the book: it was a "revisioning" to turn it from an "idealistic" tale of a great hero into a cynical story featuring a fraudulent, angsty-broody-can't-control-my-male-hormones emo anti-hero.
