Thank you Obsidian Writers.

Post » Wed Aug 26, 2009 9:07 pm

I know this is a small thread, and we've had plenty of 'Thank you' Threads, but I want to aim this specifically at Obsidians writers. I enjoyed all the dialogue, I especially enjoy how Mr. House, Caesar, and Yes-Man have such well written faction representatives. How clever some of the Dialogue trees were. Also, I really enjoyed the Main Quests dialogue and storyline. I feel the writers all deserve particular praise, since a game is the very same as a movie, meaning that it's the dialogue and story that sell the game off.

I know there are som nay sayers out here, but anyone is entitled to express their opinion, but I discourage it in this thread since this is a praise thread, not a hate thread.

I agree. The writing was very well done and very carefully thought out.

It's not only the major dialogues, but also a lot of the small lines I enjoyed sooo much.
Like Arcades "O...kaaaay", when going into sneak mode, or having a conversation about fish with Cass
Props to all the writers, who really have a touch for these small subtle things, which make these characters lively, human and likeable.
Even more, I really felt attached to a couple of these fictional videogame characters. That is probably the highest compliment I could personally make.
So yeah, it cannot be praised highly enough.
In my eyes they are leaps and bounds ahead of Bioware, with their soap operatastic, pathos-overburdened approach, you'll find in each of their games, be it Baldurs Gate, Mass Effect or Dragon Age.
So yeah, thank you for providing me with probably the best RPG experience I've had in my >25 years gaming career.
I'll continue staying a happy customer of your products. Hopefully, you all will remain in the industry for a long time to come :tops:

Whilst not disagreeing with your general point, I have to say that personally I find Caesar's "faction representatives" to be some of the dullest characters in rpg-dom. Aside from Caesar himself (and he's not without problems), there really aren't many interesting personalities or backstories there.

I know there are som nay sayers out here, but anyone is entitled to express their opinion, but I discourage it in this thread since this is a praise thread, not a hate thread.

Sorry. To redress the balance, let me mention my love for oh, let's choose... Veronica.

Well, i disagree with that. I rather have a game with excellent gameplay and a poor story, than a game with poor gameplay and excellent story. How could i play Bethesda's games otherwise?

Other than that agreed. Nice work all around :goodjob:

Agreed, some of the other incredibly well-written dialogue for me was the dialogue with The King, Chief Hanlon, Vulpes Inculta, Marcus and all companions!

I'm amazed every time I learn something new about Fallout's story, it's phenomenal.

I thought Legion had the best characters, Vulpes, Lanius, Lucius, Anthony, Lucullus, Dead Sea, all felt like living people to me.
Sure they had little dialogue, but what dialogue they did give left me craving for more. (Obsidian, if you do a Legion DLC then you "have to" expand on current legionnaire dialogue as well.)

I take it you didn't enjoy deus ex? :P

Deus Ex had bad gameplay?
I thought it was pretty awesome for it's time.

Deus Ex's story was bunkum. Story was not why that was such a seminal game.

(Perfectly serviceable bunkum, mind, it did the job.)

edit: oh ok, Invisible War was poo, no argument here.

Really? Well, fair enough, it takes all sorts, but I thought they were universally dull cyphers myself. Each to his own though.

True, wonder if the new on is gonna be Deus Ex but in prettier package or if it's "another cover based shooter with minor RPG elements and flashy explosions and graphics".
Since I'm a cynic, I believe it will be the latter, but I hope for the prior.

[EDIT!!!!]
Ahem, yes, while the game otherwise is totally awesome in writing there's one thing that they failed with: Legion.
Fix them in a DLC damnit, "All factions are gray" my ass, Legion is barely shown unless they murder people or crucify them.
So fix them and I can say that the entire game (+DLC...) was brilliantly written.

I agree, New Vegas had some great writing; it presented enjoyable storylines and dialogue without relying heavily on melodrama and I found many of the characters interesting to the point where I wished that many of them had more dialogue.

I thought Legion had the best characters, Vulpes, Lanius, Lucius, Anthony, Lucullus, Dead Sea, all felt like living people to me.

I concur, the Legion characters were well written.

To tell the truth, Legion is the greatest thing written since Unity IMO.
Ever since Fallout 1 I've felt that while factions were interesting and sometimes completely off the hook awesome they never really scratched that special spot for me.
Legion on the other hand brought that all back, I consider it the 2nd best faction in the entire series.
And this is with the little amount of content they had.
Hell.
If they had more content, dialogue, lore then I'd probably put them over Unity.
Caesars Legion was simply brilliant to me.

I wasn't a huge fan of the Legion characters, personally, but that's just me.

I really liked how the BoS was written in FONV, it was very well done, pretty believable, and presented a nice contrast to the Lyons BoS of Fallout 3.

it's the dialogue and story that sell the game off.

the dialogue was fine in the game but i disagree, its the overall gameplay that sells a game, the story is irrelevant to much degree, gameplay is what its about, there's books and movies for people who likes stories a lot, i prefer cruising and sneaking around , exploring big dungeons, fighting and stalking enemies, so to you the story is the most important part, but i think general gameplay experience is far more important, new vegas story wasn't great, it served the purpose of the game, it was ok, but any idea somehow that the story was super fantastic, i don't think it was all that great. just cause there was tons of dialogue doens't mean the story was great, actually the story was really short, and the map was static and bland so to me the game doesn't have too much replay value.

Right. But a game who's story is the exact same every time you play it has plenty of replay value.

Besides, every other game that comes out these days is an FPS. Story, dialogue, and choice is what set this game apart.

That's kind of the opposite of whats true. I'm not saying all games are mindless and all movies are story based, there are exceptions to both.

I did enjoy most the writing in this game.

Thank you for not having the same 4 voice actors for all random NPC's

It made a HUGE difference IMO.
