Looks like this schizophrenic texture quality is going to be the order of the day for Skyrim, because even the background is similarly mixed. The leaves on the right side of the screen look good...but those branches extending out on the left are embarrassing. In fact, so is that entire standing tree in the background. :(

360 screen on a PC, it's not going to be perfect. Console textures are meant to be seen from a distance so you won't notice the flaws on the tv and the PC version will eliminate those flaws. So yeah, I think everyone should just leave "low-res" out of any conversation talking about screens because they will look low res on the pc because they aren't meant to be seen on the pc.

Its on the 360, so expect better textures!

Todd said higher res for PC. He didn't say how higher res. He said he couldn't speak of that. So for all what we know, it might only be slightly higher res, and not that much of a difference.
I hope not, but it could.

Definitely the coolest looking Orc I've ever seen in a TES game, looks awesome. That black mark below his eye looks like either a tattoo or face paint, it'd be awesome if there was some level of customization with regards to those kind of things, perhaps maybe being able to have some woad on a Nord's face or something. I remember how we all used to pour over every detail of the screenshots that were released before Oblivion came out, discussing the possibility of what was shown and what possible customization or features it might be; kind of interesting to do that again with this game.

I kind of agree with you with you but if you're on a console you won't notice, if you're on a PC just use a texture pack. I'm assuming you have a good PC since you seem to care about the DX11 features and the graphics (like me :P) so you'll be able to handle mods

@Sleign: Problem, though, is that two games in a row (Oblivion and Fallout 3), Bethesda hasn't really shown any extra consideration for PC, in giving it noticeably better graphics for higher end machines. The visual flaws were mitigated on maximum settings, yes, but still visible. And I honestly don't expect them to be given a much better treatment.

Not to mention a big problem with the branches and tree I mentioned is that they're exactly that: textures. They look flat and papery, and no higher resolution is going to improve them.

Actually, months ago I was planning on making an orc character for skyrim. Mostly because I hadn't done that yet in any elder scrolls game, and I wanted to play an orc character somewhere down the line since they are my favorite Elven race.

And I am WAY more impressed by the orc pic than I am by the Khajiit one. Don't get me wrong. The latter left me with a big smile on my face. I love how that Khajiit actually looks like he could survive in the tundra wastes rather than basking in his desert sun.

But the orc... Damn he looks awesome. Way better than the puffy orcs in Oblivion. Although I am equally impressed by the scenery behind the Orc.

Yeah there will surely be texture packs for Skyrim. I'm going to use them most likely. Hopefully my PC will be up for it. But I might buy a new one for Skyrim...
The only "problem" will be that big texture packs will take some time before they are released. Maybe a year or two or so.

I'm just hoping textures will be so high res that we really won't need a texture mod. We'll just have to wait and see though. No one knows exactly how hi res.

What makes me think though is if the "hi-res" textures are already made. I mean, it's much easier to make a good hi-res texture from the start, and then downgrade it to lower-res, than to make a low-res texture and upgrade it to look good as hi-res as well. The quality of a texture is always lowered when you upgrade it from low-res, and it will take more work to make it truly good quality than it otherwise would.

That's an unfair pic :(
Texture size is low on the Oblivion one! (but then again the Skyrim one is xbox 360) :P

To be honest I've always thought Oblivion's characters to look OK and not horrible, even today.

What i mainly found funny in that picture is that Skyrim orc represents what we would think a orc would, savage, brutal. While the Oblivion pic shows a orc with a huge smile and a silly hair and dressed in a noble suit :P

Could be because the Skyrim orc is some bandit guy and the Oblivion orc is some nice business guy...
But yeah, Oblivion characters showed expressions pretty badly. I have a feeling Skyrim's NPCs will have a much more unique personality, and not everyone will have a huge smile just because their disposition is a certain number.

i like the new look of the orc, but i just cant picture these types of orcs making a grunt sounds with a deep voice, but more of a lizard sound, the artstyle is different and the new graphics look awesome.
