Anyone who doesn't see that the NCR are the good guys and the Legion are the bad guys is trying very, very, very hard not to see it.
Nobody can justify crucifying people, auctioning woman for six, and slavery as "just trying to rebuild" society. The game itself would have been better if it had just admitted to itself that The Legion were the bad guy and let players be evil and side with them instead of trying to put this mask of "just their point of view" on. It's just corny when you see how obviously bad CL is.
I respect the effort of trying to blur the lines, but it wasn't done as well as it should have been. If you wanted to make the Legion seem like a legitimate choice for bringing order to the wasteland, then they probably should've given them some more "good" characteristics other than they "zomg-ness! they don't tax people! how noble of them!"

Waiting for the pro-Legion troopers to swoop in in 3.....2.....1.. lol

Look at it this way,
Caesar took a Lawless group of savages and Instilled Order on it. thats how they do things in Caesar land.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjL0011ORb4
do I condone slavery? No. does it get crap done ? YES

what I see here (New Vegas) is 2 ideologies ramming heads

if you cant see that, you need to try to separate your self from your own values. its tough I know. if you really need help to do it, take a east/west synthesis humanities course at a local college, thats where I really learned to let go of My own personal stereotypes and to see things from someone else's perspective

Lets start here. well Same could be said about Fallout 3 suffering from sequel-itis. not playing the first 2 games and being ignorant is not an excuse. they made this game with a 3 at the end. they did not reboot the series. and they borrowed so many plot elements from the first two games i think the original developers should get royalties.

the atmosphere is different from a post apocalyptic setting. as stated in the story
Spoiler
House shot down most warheads intended for Vegas. yes a couple got through and thats why there are still some pockets of radiation in the wastes
Vegas is supposed to be a shining jewel in the radioactive wasteland of the rest of the country. and there is no hand waving being done with the NCR. if you played the 1st two games you would know that there has been considerable progress made in the past 100 years. starting off with survivors of vault 15 creating a small sustainable town in the california wastes named shady sands. after a run in with the Vault Dweller, and seeing what one person could do in the wastes, inspired Tandi to Expand and try to help others in the wastes. after about 87 years of forging trade agreements and forging a strong economy. and the NCR was born (sometime between fallout 1 and 2). and from there it grew to encompass most of Cali. the Gun Runners have been Manufacturing and reforging firearms for over 100 years as well. it was Bethesda's decision to place fallout 3 two hundred years away from the Apocalypse. i can say that fallout 3 feels too Post-apocalyptic for the date it was set in Radiation has half-lifes and would be at much lower levels. did you know its recommended that you only wait 200 hrs before leaving your shelter after a nuclear exchange? its the rule of 7's (lol while trying to find a good reference to the rule of 7's I came across http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Radiation on the vault wiki :) ) . plus humanity (i dont care how mutated or broken) will progress alot in 200 years, its in our nature.

because they would have to pay royalties for the building likenesses (yes they do that crap). doing it how they did, they could pay homage to Vegas back when it was Sin City and not the corporate monster it is today.

the West is where Fallouts Roots are. and its logical to go back to see how the Core Region is doing in the past 47 years since fallout 2 (atlease in references)
Again it was Bethesda's decision to place fallout 3 two hundred years away from the Apocalypse. I think the capital wasteland should be very much different from how it was portrayed in FO3. I mean the BOS was there for 30 years and couldn't make ANY headway vs the Supermutants? thats poor leadership

There are No Good or Evil factions in this game. and you can do almost all quest in this game regardless who you chose in the end (I've done it my self.) depending on what order you do them you may cut your self off from other quests for other factions. but back to the Good / Evil. to paraphrase Obi Wan "its all according to your point of view" Caesar does things differently than what "we" would consider a civilized person should do. But when he Subjugated his 1st tribe, he wasn't in a Civil location. and most of the tribes he Conquered were not civil in the least. just because the NCR is the most relatable faction to most Westerners, it is in no way the "Good" faction. its just as corrupt as modern governments. with the rich pulling the strings to make the govt move to protect the interests of the rich. House is his own beast.

try to think outside the box. don't believe what your told by someone. most people have their own agendas. talk to both sides before rushing to judgement.

but thats just my take on things.
and I do not mean to come off as condescending.
im just stating facts from the 1st 2 games, if I do I'm sorry its not meant that way I just cant think of a better phrasing to get the point across

I already knew all about Fallout's origins and the fact that it's been developing for 100 years. I'm not just some shlup that only played Fallout 3 and thinks the BoS and the Enclave are the world's only major factions. I can however recognize that the fact that Fallout IS advancing is harming the series. It's not so much a post-apocalyptic romp anymore. Most things are organized, there's clean drinking water, bars and restaurants and safe havens are plentiful. It's not a Wasteland, it's a Frontier. And part of this is also due to Vegas's story. Perhaps if more nukes had landed outside of Vegas, it would be more interesting.

About the royalties? They could easily have changed the names. Grand Theft Auto does it with ease. Furthermore, the Flamingo was built in 1946, hence why I speculated the Chairmen, the most authentic Sin City gang, would populate it. Instead they chose to invent Casinos none of us would recognize, save the Stratosphere (which had its name changed to the Lucky 38, go figure).

Finally, some of us like to play the game from a Role-Playing perspective. Therefore, our Courier wouldn't switch allegiances and jump around for the sake of "completing all the quests." He would pick a faction and run with it (most likely. I assume that the Yes-Man root allows more freedom). Therefore, we don't have this option. The quests are stacked in favor of the NCR, instead of being spread evenly. Furthermore, I recognize that the NCR is corrupt, and that's why I never side with them. But in comparison to sixism, cannibalism, and the regressive philosophy of the Legion in regards to technology, they come off as white knights. The Legion wasn't made to be gray. They were made to be "Always Chaotic Stupid," evil to the point of idiocy, and not in a "we're better than you" Nazi way, as was the intent, but a "We're da Orks, Ork Ork Ork!" way.

Possibly, the issue I take is any game set after the events of fallout 1 is progressing too far past the date of the Big One IMHO. unless they pull a van buren, and reset humanity again were going to be stuck in a post-post-apocalypse

 couldn't tell you then, have to ask the devs then. (althought I thought the Ultralux resembled Caesar's palace)

I understand that, I rp most of my characters (did the hop around quests on my achievement quest playthrough)
I guess I just see where Caesar is coming from. also (like in a previous http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1185096-the-annihilation-of-caesar-and-his-legion/page__view__findpost__p__17636060 ) Mako Vlazkov made a good point, we never get to see the state of Legion lands, or its peoples.

for all we know Arizona may be the beez knees. but with out that info I cant make a total judgement on how Caesar runs his empire.

Totally agree with both of these key factors !!!!

DLC for continuing i feel should defo be implemented otherwise whats the point of killing the NCR/Caesar etc.. if you dont get to see the effect if has on the people in the game??

That is the problem with hundreds of possible different endings designing and implementing these would be impossible.

How curious, the fordib drugs and alcohol, Caesar does know the history of Shady Sands, and they doesnt relies on guns, since that they are extensive melee training, among others positives things, with the exception of obvious bad things, comparing them with the ORKS and NO ENNUFF DAKKA morality, is a bit, exaggerate, To be honest

As for what I miss, Only the SandBox aspect, good riddance for the others

The scavenging. In Fallout 3 there were huge awesome places to scavenge and enjoy. For example, The National Guard Depot had a lot of stuff in it including the MIRV (Overpowered though) but still I felt good when I got the the other stuff down there too. 150 hours of fun but I did have to move on. Though I do like New Vegas its just I think Fallout 3 had better scavenging experiences.

I am hoping that Fallout 4 will be the bastard child of FO3 and FO:NV.

I think FONV misses the mark on the open world and huge underground/above ground complexes to explore. In FO3 I remember finding giant raider bases etc. underground that took me hours to explore.... plus the many places like the war memorial, Roosevelt school etc.

What I didn't like about FO3 AT ALL was that it had cool places like Talon Camp, Outcasts, Raven Rock and you couldn't do anything - no quests, no nothing. The number of side quests was anemic and many were piss poor stupid (the election, the nuka cola quest)....

I don't think the franchise has to move away from the apocalypse either. Different places would recover at different rates. New York, Chicago probably got hammered and could still be like DC easily.

If they combine the number of quests, deep dialogue and factions from FONV with FO3's huge exploration factor where you could 'free roam' and really feel 'out there' plus the random encounters that added so much they would have made the EPIC game the franchise could be.

My .02.

So I really like New Vegas. I do. Love the story, the companions, the weapons, almost everything.

But there seems to be something missing. Something that F3 had that made it so good. Something that NV is missing.

It's weird. I can't pinpoint exactly what it is.

What do you think is missing from NV that made F3 such a memorable experience?

It's missing exploration, atmosphere, random encounters, and the overall detail, detail, detail that Fallout 3 has. FONV is also missing that sense of danger lurking where you least or most expect it. You always have to be on your guard in FO3. I think they should have done more with the Legion. Made them more threatening and not so easy to kill.

I like F3 and FNV. To be honest I have played FNV more then F3. And I like it more.

The one thing F3 did better then FNV was in the sandbox world. Everything else goes to FNV.

Story - FNV
Dialogue - FNV
Non Combat Skill Use - FNV
Weapon Balance - FNV

And by FAR the biggest in my opinion is listening to the fans, and rebalancing patches.

I lost a TON of respect for Bethesda for not trying to fix the horrid level scaling in Oblivion. This game has been out for eight monthes and the patches still try to address balance issues. It is nice to make a post and have JE Sawyer respond. Even better when you see him implement some of the changes in a patch. I have never seen that level of customer/fan service from Beth.

I miss the sense of fear and awe I'd get in DC. Sure FONV has a few fear/awe moments, but nearly as many, or as stunning as FO3. Remember the first time you ran across the super mutant & beohemouth vs. Talon co. fight in the capital building? Or the first time you got to GNR when the cars blow up to your left and out pops this pissed off beohemouth bearing down on you. Or any time you leave a building or subway and a squad of talon mercs/regulars are waiting for you. Each time I was thinking holy %@*% . I just get that feeling in FONV.

Yes. Yes. Yes! I've never gotten that "WOW" feeling in FONV. The Behemoth at GNR was a huge surprise the first time I encountered it. I screamed like a little girl and ran, but it ran up on me and 'whack' I was dead. Also, trying to get through the mutants in the Mall. It was like running the gauntlet to get to the museum of history to get the satellite dish. Fabulous! I was so addicted to FO3 when I first discovered it. And really excited about FONV. But I was disappointed. It's still fun. It just doesn't inspire so much awe as FO3 did. :)

***snip*** Also at a certain point of FO3 bam Enclave all over the map. Just made everything seem more threatening.

Yes. I wish they had done that with the Legion. They should be doing more raiding parties and generally being a nuisance. Instead they stay, for the most part, in their camps and they are easy to kill.

The only time I've ever been scared in NV was once when I was returning to Jacobstown. It was late in the night and out of nowhere Marcus comes sprinting right up to me. I freaked out and spent the entire conversation he initiated me with my PC crouched down like a scared little girl (due to my panicked button-mashing) and me gasping for breath. It was amazing how fast he ran, how big he was, and it was dark so all I saw was a large shadowy figure-I totally panicked. I thought I was about to get super sledged into the sky.

I'm not talking about plot details. I'm talking about details in the landscape and the places you explore.

Tenpenny is the worst place ever. I spent as little time there as possible because of the awful elevator music. You know a lot of stuff registered as not making sense to me in Fallout 3, but I just didn't care so much because the game is fun.

Walking past the church in Rivet City late at night and overhearing Seagrave Holmes trying and failing to seduce Vera Weatherly... that's the sort of detail I miss in NV.

If Bethesda stays true to the formula they had in FO3, and adds the notable improvements of NV such as weapon mods and companion quests and such....then FO4 is going to be incredible. Absolutely the greatest game I'll ever play.

For people that never played a fo.......... Fo3 was better, because it was more action packed. Had way more things of wonder out in the open wastes. The main story line was absolutely brilliant. It made you form an honest to goodness bond with Owen and Sarah Lyons.

The game was black and white. No making everyone love you. NPC groups thought for themselves.

The almost single ending with Broken Steel left you with a feeling of accomplishment. You walked away pretty much knowing what happened. The story made you feel much more needed than that of nv. NV was fine the way it was.......

Then nv endings have flaws that take you out of the game and makd it feel cheap.

I like fo nv too. There are many great things about it, and I hope Bethesda keeps them on board to cover more ground in the series.

To old fo fans fo3 is not fo, thats why they won t give the devil his due. IMO for pure game experience fo3 is the best ever.

Bethesdas fo can be made even better by using a lot of what Obsidiandid

Problem is, Fallout isn about Black And White morality, is not about Good vs Evil. is about choices and consequences, Black and White morality means one of the shaders will be happy and the other not, Gray means that not everyone is happy with the choices, but its better then nothimg In New Vegas you dont make happy everyone either

Man, I remember getting to the D.C. Ruins for the first time to go and get the Virgo Lunar Lander dish. Fresh out of the ghoul-infested subway tunnels and out of nowhere I just get pelted with bullets from the Super Mutants. Mutants yelling and gunfire, it was a really awesome experience. One thing/feeling I don't think NV will ever give me.

I miss the random encounters. Plus I feel that NV is a lot smaller by scale and locations such as New Vegas itself and other settlements. With the world being smaller it doesn't take a lot of time to walk long distances vs F3 where it actually took time to get somewhere and easily turned around at some places. The environment was a lot different and had that post apocalyptic vibe in F3, but in NV it seems like someone just ran aorund and destroyed buildings. I love NV and still really enjoy playing, but it can't compete with the amount of content that was in F3.

Yes. Stuff like that. Over hearing conversation between the characters. You don't get a lot of that in FONV. Following Flak to the upper deck where he stands and stares off into the distance. Then when you walk up to him he turns to look at you and picks his nose. Gross? Sure. I've only caught him doing this once, but it surprised the heck out of me.

You know what was missing, the vault at the begining. I don't know why but I thought it was amazing starting as a baby in the vault more of a backstory than being some courier who gets shot in the head. I guess it gives you more of role play of who you want your character to be in NV but that unnamable something for me was the vault in the begining. First time I played the game I went the agressive route, I always picked a fight with butch whenever I could I hated that guy... [censored] jerk isn't going bully me out of my sweetrole!

Also the 50's satire like vault 101 everybody's name was all 50's names. The classroom was great I loved the questions! Tranquility lane was epic also first time I got there I did it the evil way muahhaha exploding gas stove kill everyone with a butcher knife oh man that was great...

I felt more of a connection with my character starting out as a baby, it was like my character was my own baby!

I know I'm a horrible nitpicker... But you are born in the Jefferson Memorial. in the room directly to the left before you go down the stairs in the sub-basemant

now that i think about it, i guess you were still a baby in the vault though :P I guess to Quote Ruby Rodd "so who cares!"
