That Unnamable Something That's Missing From NV

Post » Fri Jun 18, 2010 12:29 am

What do you think is missing from NV that made F3 such a memorable experience?

Dialogue so bad it most of it was accidental comedy?

Weak, on-rails story that was a lame mash-up of Fallout and Fallout 2?

Not one but two miserable endings (Pre- and Post- Borked Steal)?

Those hideous, good-riddance Behemoths?

Seeing your favorite band perform live is memorable- but then so are Uwe Boll movies. ;)

I know I'm a horrible nitpicker... But you are born in the Jefferson Memorial. in the room directly to the left before you go down the stairs in the sub-basemant

now that i think about it, i guess you were still a baby in the vault though :P I guess to Quote Ruby Rodd "so who cares!"

Oh yeah thats right totally forgot about that tid bit... Nobody enters vault 101 nobdy ever leaves but they let dad and a baby in... ANd the character is called the lone wanderer but he can have companions travel with him...

Oh and also a major thing that was missing. Weapons that looked like the ones in FALLOUT 1/2! MY biggest pet peave about both games! I hate how the laser rifles and plasma rifles look they don't look like the ones in fallout1/2! And the bozar thats still missing...

Problem is, Fallout isn about Black And White morality, is not about Good vs Evil. is about choices and consequences, Black and White morality means one of the shaders will be happy and the other not, Gray means that not everyone is happy with the choices, but its better then nothimg In New Vegas you dont make happy everyone either

I saw a bunch of choices, but few consequences. Like I said NCR charging me more money is not a consequence to killing their men.

There are no consequences you make who ever you want win.

I don t understand why I couldn t take the freeside thugs to the dam and make them win Vegas. It would be no problem with my walking tank leading the charge. I could do all the work for them too.

No consequences............. none.

actually, I'd love to take the fiends as an army to take the Dam. Or get the Westsiders take over Vegas by force. or lead the Supermutants and Nightkin to attack Caesar's camp. If it was a non-linear game with actual freedom, I might be able to do that... :P

lol I always wanted to force the Jackels and Vipers to love me, and each other. Then force them to take over Vegas......... lol

These people talk about consequences......... I must be missing something.

I am working for cl, and I m villified by the NCR right now. They don t shoot me on site (unless I wear cl armour) , and I can still work for them If I wanted to.

Where are the consequences I here so much about?

I miss the robot voices of Fallout 3. "I'm a much better tactician than you. It's all in the brain, you see!" - Fallout 3 Robobrain :lmao:

Actually, i miss robot filled dungeons. Ah, National Guard Armory. A maze full of deadly robots with a prize worth going for. Especially with certain mods  Vault 34 is quite similar, but alas a rarity in NV.

All in all, I think the thing missing from New Vegas was another 6 months to a year of development time. I don't know anything about the contract negotiations for this game, but I'm willing to bet that many at Obsidian and Bethesda regret agreeing to the deadline. Deserved or not -- you decide -- the state of the game at release was a professional blunder that reflected badly on both companies. I, for one, am impressed with Obsidian's desire to fix and improve the game; it's unusual in the industry and very much appreciated.

I sincerely hope that in a year or so we will have a special edition that will be reasonably bug free, with DLCs and main game nicely merged. Then maybe the stuff that the devs got right, which is a lot, will be recognized. Fingers crossed.

The thing missing was fun the story was decent at best imo yet it gets so highly praised when it has it's own share of plot wholes that they cover up with fallout rules so to speak .

The cesar's legion for example there just some crap half idea that obsidian had that somehow can pose a threat to the ncr and Mr House when they use just melee weapons yet fallout the rules so to speak change all logic. It's like having the roman empire up against faction like the us army it should be absolute mauld. Why is there a computer in the lucky 38 that so easily lets you kill Mr House .I don't know if he built the lucky 38 and if he did why would he build something like that when he would last a year atmost with the germs. And say he just moved into his new crib why would he select a building and invite someone that he hardly know and can easily surcome to human greed and kill him nevermind that Mr House is a sitting (crippled) duck by what seems to be his own choice .

Nevermind the raiders, slavers, robots renegades, and ghouls outside, without mentionting the war between Legion and NCR, yeah, is a cheery place to live

Vilified doesnt means hostile, they wont shoot you until you do something else, like for example, using a CL disguise, or shoot them

Where are you consequences?, they are in the game and they appear when you complete a quest, and it appears in the slideshow to certify you that they happened

Thats not a plothole, they are a threat, they are in war with the NCR, the NCR doesnt take this like just any other random enemies, they even had problems defeating the Khans back in California,

?Do you want plotholes?, I have a fair reason to complain, the REPCONN quest have no sense whatsoever, thats a plothole, the whole Caesar Legion and the Computer in the Luck 38 is not a plothole, is explained

And same with the bos in the mojave they have a big computer designed to destroying themselves with no back up or fail safe what if they get spy ware

Spy ware......

You know, this irrelevant, that doesn even exist in the game, the self destruct sequence was created in order to avoid people to obtain BOS tech and other knowledge,

You actually think that its gonna work in that way? Fiends are on drugs, they could care less about the DAM, Westsiders dont have nothing against New Vegas,(they live near of it) Super Mutants are neutral in this conflict,
The game had freedom, just dont expect to do everything that one want to do, it is better then Fallout 3 and "BOS or bust" dilemma

How is Cesar's legion not a plothole they use melee weapons against people who mostly use guns and somehow don't get mauled and don't ncr vet rangers have a higher melee than most of Cesar's legion. And the spyware was a joke:) the bos self destruction is a bit more debatable but i have never seen any excuse or reason as to why theres a computer there in game or even the vault. So i can just waltz in and thats the only function of that specific terminal wtf!!!!
And say i was vilified by the police i would expect them to take some sort of action and not just offer me quests .

For me, NV lets itself down in the following areas:

1) Small map size - looking at the map on the wiki, you can see that over 1/3 of the squares are out-of-bounds. Fewer "enterable" buildings & underground locations add to this problem.
2) Random encounters - baddies are all nailed to their span areas.
3) Monotonous radio.

But overall, the positives (hardcoe mode, weapon choices etc) far outweigh the negatives!

Caesar's Legion has some of the most brilliant tactical minds in the Wasteland at the head of its war effort. Vulpes Inculta is a master of subterfuge and sabotage, Caesar himself is extensively well-read in warfare having read Julius Caesar's memoirs and presumably Sun Tzu, Lanius is a brute but he is also a clever tactician. The NCR campaign, on the other hand, is lead by General Oliver, who is implied to be incompetent. Given the utter disarray most of the NCR's front is in, I'd say the blame does not lie solely with Oliver, even. A lot of the NCR's leadership seems plagued by stupidity.

Caesar's Legion uses guns. They just don't rely on them. The Legion have numbers and unshakable morale on their side, and are not above playing dirty. The Legion fights to win, all the time, always, while the NCR has been getting fat and lazy.

Several conversations mention that the Brotherhood self-destructs their bunkers. It's standard procedure in the event of a full-scale attack the chapter can't repel.

Being "vilified" means you are hated. It doesn't mean the NCR has any proof of the terrible things they believe you did. That's why they send the Rangers to assassinate you away from civilized areas, instead of trying to arrest you.

There is no General at McCarran. Oliver is the only General in the region.

You know, no need to waste your time trying to argue with them, no matter how many time we explain, they just stay in the "Legion ie evil" no matter what arguments we use to justify, they counterargument us again, lets agree to disagree and everyone is happy

I'm the opposite. I loved FO3. But now, after playing NV, I can't even think of playing FO3 again. I'm not sure what it is, but NV is just fundamentally superior in every aspect in my personal opinion. For instance, no moment in FO3 was even remotely as engrossing and impacting as the first time you make it to Nipton.

Nevermind the raiders, slavers, robots renegades, and ghouls outside, without mentionting the war between Legion and NCR, yeah, is a cheery place to live

And there is the problem. You have all those dangers around you, but you never actually "feel" them. I do not feel like a war is going to break out in NV. There should be random conflicts with the NCR and the CL, the fiends should be charging in at Freeside, etc. None of this happens and it feels like you hear more about "omg a war is approaching" but you never actually truly experience the tensions.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway, things I think are missing:

- Random encounters (UFO crash anyone?)
- Radio (love Three Dog)
- The feel of Fallout 3: I felt like I was actually trying to survive. Everything felt more...desperate? I thought this was better than the way FONV's atmosphere was.
- The amount of people: The Mojave has the Strip, we should see people traveling there. This is the Mojave where things are rebuilding, but I think there were more people in FO3 then FONV.
- The AI: I think some others have mentioned this, but I will still say my piece. When I walk into the Strip it doesn't feel like I'm on the Strip. When I walk into Goodsprings it doesn't feel like I'm in a true town. When I walk into Megaton there is a sheriff, there are people worshiping a bomb, there is a lady standing around selling food, there is a guy sitting next to his brahmin, there is a guy overlooking the town from his bar, etc. In Rivet City there are people practicing religion each Sunday, all the people in the market section go to eat in the morning, there is a guy running a museum, etc. At Tenpenny tower there are guards all over the place, people going outside to sit, theres a restraunt where people go to eat, there are merchants, an owner who sits on his roof sniping at whatever he feels like and a robot bartender.
- The Passion: Bethesda injected a lot more feeling into FO3. There were so many instances of actual style/passion. I remember when I found Dukov's place in the middle of the DC Ruins. I thought that was hilarious. Then I walked into the desolate town of Andale. When I walked into the first house and talked to the people I knew something was wrong. Then when I started investigating myself I found out they were actually cannibals! Stuff like that, that isn't an actual quest, but just something to figure out is awesome.
- Quests: I can't say any quests from FONV really stand out to me like the ones in FO3. FO3 had a quest where we needed to steal the Declaration of Independence from a robot who thought he signed it! We got to deal with a guy in a random town who wanted to get in bed with his neighbor, we could rig an election in another town, we got to deal with two superheroes fighting each other in the middle of a town, we got to find Abraham Lincoln's head, we got to go into a virtual reality simulator etc, etc, etc. I felt like the quests in FO3 were just better/zanier.

Don't get me wrong, I love FONV (I like all Fallout games pretty much), but I think Bethesda did a good job with FO3 in everything apart from the story. The plot was ridiculous and clearly hobbled together from poor ideas. They ruined the image of the Enclave, offered us really no choice to join them and they glorified the BOS as if they were the messiahs of the entire Wasteland.

There are skirmishes between NCR/CL, Fiends and merchants, and merchants/CL. Those are already in the game. Fiends don't attack Freeside or Westside because both are well defended and because Motor-Runner had the Fiends settle at Vault 3 specifically to avoid his people fighting battles they can't win.
