The 1st recon beret

Post » Tue Mar 29, 2011 11:10 pm

Hey, just what I wanted to state. Sniper rifle critical chances are way, way off the charts. They already do massive damage and provide immense armour penetration... The crit chance makes them insanely powerful.

that makes them powerful, but overpowered? sniper rifles are high precision tools, so i think it's legit to apply a high multiplier on them.
i like the 1st recon beret, but yeah it does seem to contradict their overall philosophy when it gets to clothing. while there's very few pieces of clothing offering stat bonusses, all of a sudden you get this finesse hat. and lol to the guy stating finesse not being a good perk, definitely one of the top 5 perks in the game.
i think the actual 'problem', if someone might call it so, is base crit rate a character can reach. my current build is already at 21% (8 lck, built to destroy, finesse, 1st recon beret), so every hit with a sniper or ratslayer is a guaranteed crit. you can actually get more than 100% crit chance, which i consider a bit silly.
otoh, so many adjustments were made to make the game m ore challenging, that i'm really not complaining about this.
the only thing bugging me here is, the beret being actually that much better than anything else, that i just can't bring myself to take it off :)
couldn't care less about dt modifiers, as i'm still running around in reinforced leather armor at lvl 22.
as a sniper you just don't need more, and whenever it gets to close combat, there's always med-x and slasher :)

Sniper Rifle ain't overpowered unless you have a Crit build.

Or you can say Gobi isn't powerful enough for a unique.......

So now that they removed the nuts from the Chinese Stealth Armor you have found the one item in the game that completely ruins New Vegas?

I'm gonna go ahead and guess that you probably also think that the .50 is over powered, fast travel is stupid, Boone is too good, it's too easy to get money, hardcoe wasn't challenging enough, and very hard is too easy.

+5 critical chance - definitely not equal to 5 points of luck. No where in the game does it say how much 1 luck = x amount of crit.

You must be new here. One point of luck = +1% to critical chance. If you like it in writing read the description for the "Finesse" perk.

You can also verify that this is true on the PC by opening the console and using the command "player.getav critchance" (player, get actor value, critical hit chance) which clearly shows it to be 1 per luck plus bonuses.

Really this isn't the most amazing headgear ever. Consider a normal gun that has a x1.0 crit hit multiplier, and does its regular damage as critical hit damage. Which is true of most Guns. An extra 5% chance of a critical is 5% more chance of doing double damage, which is roughly equal to 5% more damage. Compare that to taking several points (up to 10) off of every hit you take. Probably worth it for energy weapon users (energy weapons have higher critchance multipliers, and they see will see much more than 5% extra damage), but marginal for Guns people and really marginal for unarmed/melee/explosives.

Maybe a little over-powered, especially if you combine it with a (also slightly over-powered?) Rebreather for +3DT non-degradeable...

almost feels like cheating...

Just the rebreather non-degradeable, or the beret too? The first hat I got was from Wild Wasteland from the fridge. But that had degraded to nothing. The beret never degrades. I think that makes it to powerful. There shouldn't be anything that can't degrade.

Rebreather doesn't have any DT (Damage Threshold) on it. It has 3% DR (Damage Reduction).

i think its disgusting being forced to use clothing or weapons that make you more powerful.

you should all be running round naked with a butterknife and jumping into deathclaw nest screaming "now quiver in fear, mental is here"

ffs,if you dont like an item, take it to a rad site and drop it in the gloop.

I don't think the hat is overpowered, but...
I do think it's available a little too easily, and I'd like to see other hats/helmets with +5 crit on them too. Or even something funkier, like -enemy DT, or an accuracy boost, or +SPECIAL other than PER.
I like it and use it, and don't want it nerfed, but I would like the option of wearing something else that is equally as powerful.

What is so over powered? Since the moment I got my duster and the ranger casual wear I never changed my hat to nothing but a desperado hat. :disguise:
How could you wear power armour with beret hat is beyond me. It's like being in a tank, with the hull only. :D Put some style in the game.

I always carry the beret in my inventory, because it's a gift from my best ingame friend, Boone. Never found a difference between my crits, with or without the hat.
This is not a MMO game where people should whine, omg this guy has 3% more crits chance :) And considering how few unique armour items are, it's good that 1st recon beret give some actual bonus, not only looks.

listening to the comments about the 1st in game totally justifies the beret stats.

the elite should have elite gear.

Ahhh... I was assuming all armour/clothing was DT the only thing I noticed as DR was med-x.

Personally I'm definitely not complaining about how good I think it is, just discussing it.

If I didn't like it, I'd take it off... it makes a nice change from a combat helmet or cowboy hat.

But some screenshots look strange at times of movement IMO. i wear the red berret they wear the green ones.

The beret just screams badass and +5 crit along with 50 cal sniper rifle is usually GG. Also it looks good with MK II Combat Armor / Authority glasses. :)

What really annoys me about that beret is you don't have to do anthing to get it. Boone will just give it to you and you don't even have to complete his first quest, which is one of the easiest companion quests in the game. Only Veronica is easier to find and hire...
