The 1st recon beret

Post » Tue Mar 29, 2011 10:37 pm

So by now many of you have done Boone’s recruitment mission and may have received that wonderful 1st recon beret of his.

This piece of head wear grants

+1 perception
+5 critical chance

This seems insanely overpowered to me. A hat that grants the same benefit as the level 10 finesse perk?

It seems even stranger since there seems to be less of +5 / +1 clothing that was in FO3. Then all of a sudden you get the magical sniper hat that can turn almost any character into a critical beast.

By no means have I discovered every + piece of head gear in the game, so maybe there’s other head gear that can compete with the benefit of the 1st recon beret. But I'm 1/2 through my second playthrough and I have yet to find any piece of head gear that can compete.

At +5 crit rate is, IMO, more beneficial than a higher DT a helmet would grant. I love many of the new hats and some of the helmets, but logically I find them hard to use when I have the 1st recon beret.

As it stands now, if you are a ranged character, why would you wear anything else? Crit rate +5 is just too much.

Opinions?

I thought the same thing myself actually. It's as far as I have seen the best hat for a gun user, even though there is no DT. I just love how silly I look in Power Armor, 1st Recon Beret, and Authority Glasses.

It makes some sense though, it's a 1st Recon Beret and as I hear whenever I have Boone with me near any NCR they are quite the badasses.

Yeah I wouldn't have a problem with it if there was other head gear on par, just a little tough to wear a cowboy hat when that beret sits in the drawer.

Look at Boone without his Beret, his forehead is so big, and its so funny! ROFL
But, the First Recon Beret, I like it, but its not the best headgear out there.

In your opinion what is? I've found plenty of unique weapons but can seem to discover any unique clothing that is worth while.

Best Headgear in the game. I usually don't wear headgear but the beret is an exception because of how overpowering it is and how easily you can get it.

Way overpowered. With a Sniper Rifle this alone gives +25% crit chance. Can have 0 luck and still 1/4 of your shots are crit with it. :-|

I would say that the T-51b power helmet is the best one to go with the power armor and in my opinion, the best helmet out there.
Unique clothing list:
Remnants Power Armor and Helmet
Gannon Family Tesla Armor and Helmet
Papa Khan's Helmet
Vance's Lucky Hat
Vikki's Bonnet
Bounty Hunter Duster
Explorer's Gear
Follower's Lab Coat
Naughty Nigtwear
Viva Las Vegas (worn by the King)
Caleb McCafferty's Hat
Van Graff Combat Armor
Destroyed Collar
Benny's Suit
Crocker's Suit
Caesar's Armor
Jessup's Bandana
President Kimball's Suit
Chinese Stealth Armor (Hoover Dam Offices Area in irradiated barrel area)
General Oliver's Cap
Legate's Helmet
Regulator's Duster
Party Hat
Space Suit and Helmet
Boone's Beret

Hope all that helped.

It's a nice hat. Overpowered? Well, let's examine the stats.

1 perception - okay, cool? Most hats in the game provide perception.
+5 critical chance - definitely not equal to 5 points of luck. No where in the game does it say how much 1 luck = x amount of crit.

Okay, so now let's say that the 5 crit was equal to the finesse perk. So what? The perks in this game aren't that good. And finesse definitely isn't the best perk.

I'm saying that's a pretty big bonus for a hat, especially one that can be obtained so easily

whether or not finesse is a good perk or whether perks in this game are good or not is another topic entirely.

IMO, there should be no hat that gives you the bonus equivalent of a perk.

+5 to guns, sure. but +5 to crit chance? No thanks.

@ ICE625

Thanks for compiling that list. I only skimmed cause i didn't want to know it all. The stealth suit returns? Looks like we got bigger problems than a 1st recon beret. Just Kidding, I don't even know how they tweaked it for FNV. Hoping it runs on MF cells.

I believe if you read the perk Finesse it tells you it gives crit chance = to 5 points of luck, which is 5%

Chinese stealth suit just doubles stealth boy time I believe, it doesn't give you stealth when crouched.

You must be new here. One point of luck = +1% to critical chance. If you like it in writing read the description for the "Finesse" perk.

The stealth suit had been 100% neutered.

Yay! That seems balanced.

I liked the everything about the stealth suit in FO3, except when it broke my game :). Glad they made a little tweak to the CSS, it just looks so damn cool.

I don't think it is OP because a Veteran Ranger Helmet weighs nothing and has a DT of 4. I still love it though.

Beret is definitely the best helm in the game. Unless your into some weird role playing where you like to take more damage then you lash out. My damage output to intake ratio is somewhere in the 100000 to 1. Who the [censored] needs DT. Sitting at 24 DT on vhard hardcoe Lvl 30 w.o using any companions, games already easy as is.

When wearing it, i havn't really noticed a difference in my crit chance. It's probably becuase i have a high luck, but i can see that it can become overpowered. You discover enemies earlier, and can take em out easier...

1st Recon Beret provide 0 DT

Where as Power Armour Helms provide 5~7 DT, equivalent of 2 ranks of Toughness; Hell, T-51b even give +1Charmisma.

Overpower much?

I only had average luck (5) when I found this beret, I wore it for about 20 levels and to be honest when I finally took it off to wear the T-51b helmet for DT I really didn't notice any difference.

Makes me wonder if it "really" does enhance crit chance, so many obvious bugs in the game I'm sure there are a few that fly under the radar too.

I think it's too good for the level you find it at, I found it when I was about level 6-8 which pretty much made every other hat redundant for most of the game. Would have been better to find it later in the game I think.

Maybe a little over-powered, especially if you combine it with a (also slightly over-powered?) Rebreather for +3DT non-degradeable...

almost feels like cheating...

Hey, just what I wanted to state. Sniper rifle critical chances are way, way off the charts. They already do massive damage and provide immense armour penetration... The crit chance makes them insanely powerful.

If you think that's bad you should try it with the YCS/186, or giving one to Boone with Max Charge MF cells. On 100 energy weapons it delivers 250 DMG and about 650 DPS, before you even drop some Psycho down your neck for some seriously ridiculous power.

I prefer using Motor Runner Helmet and Rebreather with Remnant tesla Armour, just for the looks.
I have 7 luck so i don't really see the benefit of the Beret as I am doing sneak attack criticals most of the time and everything dies in the first shot anyway, I imagine it would be a good item to get early on in the game though.
