[Relz] The Abandoned Mountain Shack

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 6:02 pm

I've released the final version of my Abandoned Mountain Shack. The shack is an exterior home you can fix up yourself. As an exterior home, the "interior" is actually part of the exterior world, so you can see out the windows, hear the wind blowing through the trees, and so forth. When you click on the door, you are not transported to some other cell, you just open the door and walk in. It's a very different experience. (It will never rain inside the shack). Since the shack has been abandoned for many years, it's in poor shape. The outside is littered with old bones, fallen logs and other debris. Things are becoming overgrown with vines and are in a general state of disarray. Inside, the lights and stoves burned out long ago, spider webs are everywhere, and there's a big hole in the floor. There's more--but you get the idea. However, everything can be fixed--by you. Fixing it up is actually a mini-adventure game within Oblivion. Once it's fixed up, the shack has several unique features that can be very helpful to your character. You'll have to discover these for yourself.

I am very grateful for the response to the shack so far. It has been featured on the opening page of Find a Home at Oblivion's Real Estate since it's initial release (thanks Shezrie). It is also currently leading as File of the Month at TES Nexus. Although I am happy with this final version of the shack, it's not for everybody. If you are looking for a big house or a mansion with lots of display cases, an indoor pool, and so forth, the shack's not for you. If you are looking for a unique rustic home with one of the best views in all of Cyrodiil, this just might be the ticket. You can find it at: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22846.

Being one of the beta testers I can tell you that this mod has reached perfection. Everything works exactly as it should, there is absolutely nothing missing, even an incompatibility with Harvest Flora has been done away with. Aside from all the boring technical stuff... this mod is fun! I can't count how many times I've "fixed" up the shack during testing, but I still really enjoy doing it. Maybe because there are no other quests like it in Oblivion. Once you clean up the place it really is a charming place to live. It really feels like a cozy cabin in the mountains. Although, if you are thinking that its probably too small for you, your companions, and all your stuff, think again. There is a bed upstairs for you and two downstairs for your companions, plus plenty of storage containers throughout. You can even park your horses in the small field just outside. The views are stunning, whether from the inside or on the porch or from "peace rock", be sure to sit and enjoy the sights of Cyrodiil for awhile. Hmm, what else can I say? Oh, yes! For those of you wondering how and why the shack is here, there is a back story for you to discover. And for maximum enjoyment I highly suggest you look (and listen ;) ) at all the little details this mod has to offer. Really more than anything this mod is a work of art. :)

Only downside is if you are a vampire :P You go to sleep for the day and wake up dead, cause to avoid sun damage you have to go inside through a load screen.

You could sleep downstairs, that is a separate cell.

Thank you all for the kind words. DoomKnight, as Phaedra said, the basemant is a true interior cell so, although I didn't plan it that way, the shack is vampire friendly. Didn't I see you in the UnderDark?

Really brilliant work, Vince. I love the rustic simplicity of the decor, and it really works as a practical and functional character home. The extra story and character you've given it really make it quite polished. Well done, sir! :goodjob:

Very happy to feature this incredible mod on ORE. In my humble opinion it still remains the most unique and best house mod ever made. :)

I posted a comment today challenging shack residents. As I noted in my original post, fixing up the shack is a mini-adventure game within Oblivion. Although it does require some thought, it's all pretty straightforward. However, I added a second easter egg with revision 1.2. While the first easter egg is just something out of place, the second is a challenge most users will never discover. So, I posted a comment today as follows:

*** A CHALLENGE FOR ALL SHACK RESIDENTS ***

As you know by now, fixing up the shack does require some thinking, but is relatively straightforward and easy compared to a real adventure game--except for the easter egg introduced with R1.2. The original easter egg is just something that is completely out of place. Surprisingly, no one has noticed, or if they have, they have not commented on it. The second easter egg, introduced in R1.2, is a difficult challenge that only a few will solve. And the reward is very substantial. Depending on your skill set and level, it can be a game changer.

So, if you want a real challenge that requires thought and diligence, rather than killing something, solve the second easter egg. Once you make the initial discovery, you'll know. If you do, send me a pm with two pieces of information: what the reward is and what you had to discover to find it. Each shack resident that does this will have his or her name added to a list of master advertures. The list will be prominently displayed in the description here.
(at the TES Nexus site)

If you are a true diehard adventurer, you might want to give it a try--it ain't easy. :P

So just some feedback:

- While moving items around to customize the house, I've managed to accidentally get items shoved down the space between the bed/dressers/etc and the wall with no way to get them outta there. No matter the angle, I can't get the items selected :( Blah!

- I wish the table was locked down after I complete the 90% dealio as my npc companion (and myself even) ran into it and knocked down all my plates and moved the table lol.

Relative to the items you dropped into a bad place, try the console (press '~') then tcl to toggle collision off. You should then be able to move to where you can select the dropped items.

Relative to the table, from the ReadMe at the Rev 1.10 update: "A button can now be found on the end of the bookcase. Once you have set the small round table upright and placed it where you want it, pressing the button allows you to convert it into a normal, immovable table". So, set it were you want it and press the button. :)
