The GM Advice Thread

Post » Sat Jun 08, 2013 8:17 am

Hello all! I am by no means the best or most experienced writer on this forum, but I thought it would be a good idea to write up a quick little thread that will hopefully prove to be informative for both old and new members alike. The purpose of this thread is to discuss the importance of the GM, as well as to offer advice for anyone attempting to take up the mantle.

First off is my little definition of the ideal GM(please note this is purely my opinion, and I'm sure many will disagree). A GM should have the RP planned out thoroughly(assuming it is story driven) or generally(for player driven RP's such as Grayditch). Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the GM should puppet the other writers, just that they should know what they're getting into before starting. Secondly, a GM should pay attention to the writers' input and be open to suggestions and criticism. Lastly(and some would argue most importantly) A GM should stay with their thread from conception to death. As long as players are interested, they shouldn't give up on the Roleplay.

Well anyways, as you could undoubtedly tell, that's just a basic outline and I'm excited to hear the advice that you all have to give.

Awesome. I think I'll actually make my own RP sometime in the future. But then again, my one problem is that I really svck at planning out stories. I normally just make it up as I go. Any suggestions to breaking this habit for the sake of an awesome RP?

I have that problem too. The problem with making stuff up as you go is that(at least for me), I'll sometimes rush less than stellar material with no time to review it. Planning lets you double check your material.

I'd set a loose plot down, one that leaves room for improvisation and having a plot also gives the RP a general direction, whilst making it loose allows all involved to make their mark in it and allows everyone to be included, an RP should also be about Inclusion, as a GM I would strive to include all who are in the RP, it is an RP not a Fan-fic and deserves to be treated as such.
