the Akaviri Potentate

Post » Sun Aug 04, 2013 5:30 am

was reading up on the History of the Empire, and it mentions the time after the Death of Reman III being "The Akaviri Potentate"

where Potentate Versidue-Shaie took over the ruling of the empire declaring Marshal law, but kept his title of Potentate...

Heres my Question..

During this time, who lit the Dragonfires?
It is said only one of the Dragonsblood utilizing the Amulet of Kings can light them..

as the Potentate was not a true Emperor, and was likely not of Dragonborn Lineage, he wouldn't be able to light the Dragonfires..

Did they just stay lit from the time of Reman III through the crowning of the next Dragonborn Emperor?

they coudn't stay lit considering that they are unlit during time of ESO , so I guess that during all this time no daedra thought to actually do something with it.

It's difficult to say for sure - firstly, you do not need to be directly descended from the Dragonborn to light the dragonfires, or even to be human - Empress Katariah was a Dunmer. Certainly the Empire didn't collapse during her reign, indeed she was popular among the commoners. Thehttp://uesp.net/wiki/Lore:The_Book_of_the_Dragonborn puts forward this mystery:

So they could perhaps have been lit - the title "emperor" might be merely a formality in contrast to the actual rituals. But http://uesp.net/wiki/Lore:The_Legendary_Sancre_Tor talks about Tiber Septim recovering the Amulet of Kings from the tomb, suggesting he was the first to use it since Reman III's death.

The purpose of the Dragonfires is not entirely certain. Daedra seem to invade immediately after the death of Uriel Septim in TES IV, but there are plenty of periods in history where the fires have not been lit but there are no records of Daedric incursion. The actual importance of the Dragonborn Emperor and the rituals associated with it has become rather confused over the course of recent games.

The http://www.imperial-library.info/content/nu-mantia-intercept suggests that the barrier is kept up by a number of Towers, White Gold only being one of them. http://www.imperial-library.info/content/words-clan-mother-ahnissi-her-favored-daughter also describes a similar barrier, kept up by the Khajiit getting high (yup). http://www.imperial-library.info/content/darkest-darkness and http://www.imperial-library.info/content/liminal-bridges suggest that it is possible to create gates to Oblivion, but those normally close quickly after opening. So between all that the reason Dagon did not invade earlier might be that the barrier was still to strong to allow gates to be open long enough to make an invasion possible.
