The Akaviri

Post » Thu Jul 22, 2010 7:34 am

I know it's been said multiple times that the akaviri were apparently "eaten" by the serpent folk of akavir, but I remember the fighter's guild being originally an akavir only organization. If so, then where are they?

They are in Akavir, a separate continent from Tamriel.

I know, they have been "eaten" there. But in cyrodil, the fighter's guild was an "akaviri only" organization, indicating akaviri settlements there.

Akavir is an entire continent. The race you are referring to is the Tsaesci. The quote from Mysterious Akavir that states, "The serpent-folk ate all the Men of Akavir a long time ago, but still kind of look like them." has possibly been misinterpreted or mistranslated. The book goes on to say that, "When natives of Tamriel think of the Akaviri they think of the Serpent-Folk, because one ruled the Cyrodilic Empire for four hundred years in the previous era. He was Potentate Versidue-Shaie, assassinated by the Morag Tong." The Akaviri who established the fighters guild and settled in Tamriel were the serpent folk.

In the early years of the 2nd Era, Tamriel was actually ruled by Akaviri Potentates, leftovers from a force that tried to invade years earlier. Some of the Tsaeci snake men who were left over from that failed invasion were allowed to keep their lives and to serve the Empire as advisors and military strategists.

According to The Pocket Guide to the Empire, First Edition, which was commissioned near the end of the Second Era:

"Akaviri surnames are rare and prized possessions among the Cyrodilic citizenry of today, and there are trace facial features of the Akaviri in many distinguished Cyrodilic families. Some colonies of "true Akaviri" still exist in both the Empire and its border regions, but they are named so only for their practices and customs than for the purity of their blood."

One can only assume that over the nearly five hundred years between the publication of this book and the time of the Oblivion crisis, the Akaviri traits were bred out of the citizens of Cyrodiil.

That would appear to indicate either that Tsaeci can breed with men and mer, or that the Pocket Guide was referring to the men of Akavir rather than the beast people.

I think the Pocket Guide was referring to the men of Akavir, many of whom stood with the Tsaesci at Pale Pass. It occurs to me that, if there were a successful union between Tsaesci and Cyrodilic, such an offspring would not have gone unnoticed.

The offspring would take the race of the mother, and since there weren't any Akaviri in Cyrodiil, i'm assuming the lizards were all male.

The Akaviri at pale pass could have been a bipetal Mo species.

The one explanation I can think of is that perhaps they are Tang Mo mercenaries...granted they use the body textures and voice actor of an Imperial, but they're all ghostified and it's hard to make out details. Those could conceivably be monkey beast folk. The skeletal structure of a monkey isn't that different from that of a human, excepting the posture, some bone proportions and tail bones in some species...but still, they'd pass for Tang Mo before they'd pass for Tsaeci.

But I don't want to imagine humans breeding with Tang Mo, even less than I want to imagine the possibilty of human/Tsaesci relations, so I'll keep telling myself they are Akaviri humans.

Doesn't the Annotated Anuad state that the Tsaesci are humans?

All around us: in every barrel, under every rock, in your mother's bonnet!

Also, there was a sanctuary city in Rimmen, about 500 years ago.

Where have I seen the term Heart Wight? I've searched and searched through here and the library, but I can't find it. Would someone set a brother straight?

And the Rimmen ones made a big Temple with lots of statues, according to the book, as well as somehow brought many fountains to the desert city, probably by magic.

Heart Wight was a belt or ring or something taken from the body of an Ash vampire, BTW.

Not so dusty here, I still regularly play Morrowind. It helps, too, because I find little tidbits of dialog or lines in books people who only READ the lore miss by distancing themselves from the games.

Just saying, the games are a part of the lore and the way it was intended to be experienced. It was an inside comment either way.

Um...you may be a little confused. The sea crab monsters probably come from Pyandonea, not Akavir. The four races of Akavir are Tango Mo monkey people, Snow Demons of Kamal, the Tsaeci immortal vampire snakemen, and the Ka Po'Tun tiger people (no known relation to Khajiit). There were once Dragons and Men on Akavir but they were eaten by the Tsaeci.

I don't know if I've ever heard anything about moose people....but there were Centaurs in Daggerfall, and there are Minotaurs in at least two of the games. There used to be a lot of lesser known tribes of Beastfolk and Men in the world who have gone extinct, so it's possible there were moose or deer people at one point.
