The Art of Roleplay: Alive or Dead?

Post » Wed Jul 14, 2010 10:12 am

First up, If there is already a post like this, I didnt see it so meh,

I was wondering what everyone's take on playing styles in New Vegas is, and just curious to see what different play styles are out there.

I mean I prefer to make a character in the form of a Prospector type, just collecting all kinds of junk from everywhere, from Bent Tin Cans up to Unique Weapons, taking a Room at the Dino Dee Lite Motel in Novac as early as possible just so I can store it all before doing any other missions other than the tutorial, but hey thats just me, it may be pointless or painstaking, (especially using Melee weapons as not to waste ammo lol) but thats my style. I also like to focus more on the Repair/Crafting/Intelligent Skills rather that the Fighting Type ones (Energy Weapons, Melee, etc)

In F3 I had my SPECIAL Maxed to 10 across the board, obviously in this one, without "Almost Perfect" and Bobbleheads (And no the Implants just arent the same) it makes for a more interesting character build which alters the old fashion Max me out style, so what does everyone like to do in regards to that (IE, What are your intial SPECIAL requirements, What Perks do you tend to pick, what Perks do you find irrelevant)

If anyone is interested, hows about putting down here what style of play you like doing, Hopefully Im not the only one who doesnt try and max the characters fighting abilities out in exchange for exploring and taking pleasure in collecting scrap otherwise Im going to feel like a loser lol

Well, I'm running a guns specialist character, and have focused on guns/med/lockpick/repair skills initially, with the appropriate perks (apart from two levels of fast learner). Considering the story line, the sherriff duster is dress of choice, except for those obvious combat situations and it's half decent armour for those times. I'm a bit of a packrat, as I'm always in need of caps (thank you EDE, my flying footlocker).

I'm exploring more than clearing out an area then moving on. I'm one who goes for value in a game, rather than simply racing through it...

As far as character development goes, I've aimed to build up the gun type skills, and am only one or two levels from maxing that, then I can pour the skill points into non-combative type skills. Basically, I did a generalist type build first off in F3, and came into FNV with the intention of getting one combat skill up fast so I don't run into too much trouble early on (want to get through this without dying).

I have to agree somewhat with you guys above. I am going slower than i have done with FO3 as i am really interested in the hardcoe mode. In order to play hardcoe and not be frustrated at the whole mechanic i will need to devote some time to the game. I will be spending considerable time just learning where stuff is, how stuff works, and figuring out what mods i will run.

Once i have established that i feel comfortable i will end this character by completeing the game and then i will make a new one in HC mode. I do try and decide before i develop the character just what type it will be. I usually play female characters as an avowed perv if i gotta look at wiggling tail it might as well be wiggling female tail, so once i have decided on the alignment of the character i will go from there. I usually make the extremes first so i will make the goodie goddie, then the [censored], then one that will walk a line.

Should be interesting to say the least.

I get what you mean. I like to make my character into this sort of gentle, lone-wolf type, that walks the line between good and just indifferent. It works really well in this game because of the Courier's mysterious past in the beginning, lol. She's gotta be sixy, too, so always the Black Widow perk. Right now the specialty is guns, repair, and lockpick.

In FO3, the armor I always ended up going back to was Raider Badlands, with red Rough Nite hair. I had decided that this reminded me of Leeloo from The 5th Element, then I promptly realized that makes me sound pretttty lame, but oh well. Ahem. In New Vegas I've switched to Merc Charmer, Merc Grunt, or Leather Armor, and the Seductive hair or whatever it's called, since I figure she was less rugged and more sophisticated before she got shot and buried. In fact, she kind of reminds me of the Bride from Kill Bill. Why do I always do this?

Roleplaying makes Fallout twice as fun as it would be if I were just running around killing things. hardcoe mode is making things even more interesting.

I'll probably do four or five different plays like I did FO3, just so I can get all the play styles in. I'm sure it will be ages before the next Fallout. (or at least it damn well better be, primarily because gamesas is hard at work on TES!!!) So I plan on getting my $$$ worth on playthroughs.

My first playthrough was a ranger type. Ranged weapon specialist. Max sneak, guns, survival, and pretty high on a few other obvious ones.

I'm on my second through now, playing it slower. Doing a scientist type, lets all the big guys do the dirty work with guns. Focused on explosives though, to even it out.

Next play through, I plan on doing an evil, legion supporting char.

I always love it when I finally find a game that has a level of immersion to it that I can get into. Generally, I prefer to role-play with others (it IS a social activity) on MUDs or other similar settings, but the FO universe kinda does it for me. :D

The work put into the game world (thus far, that I've seen) is amazing. Nothing like the bland expanses of gray rock and some more gray rock on gray dirt with gray roads that was FO3 -- now there is a realistic level of plant and animal life, and God forbid, mild forms of weather. (The dry lake you come to early in the game gave me a giggle)

I always play goody-goody characters but this time around I am drawn to the seductiveness of the Legion. First character is an aloof gal who, while still possessing a conscience and morals, gets drawn into the Legion politics and develops a dislike for dishonestly-good-guy Big Gov'ment (NCR).

My first playthrough is heavily speech based. It is just cool to out-speech npc's.

Agreed. It's really fun that you can avoid combat for the most part: I think you get a better story knowing that the human ghoul from the Rocket Mission is safe in Novac and that the Great Khans aren't just attacked needlessly in one mission.

I usually go through 4-5 different creations. The one I am most excited for is my melee fighter. I never played one before sooo I am also a little hesitent.

My back story. The bullet caused some serious mental instability although they aren't evident right away. The brain damage has caused a loss of depth perception making him horrible long range. He's also become a bit of a loose cannon with uncontrollable fits of rage. While usually a decent guy his temper can turn him into a bit of a monster.

Starting off hes alright guy fighting through quests trying regain his memory and get his revenge. As he travels he gets more and more frustrated with his task. Unable to track down the man with the suit quickly he turns to his temper to get what he wants. During a raid on some Khans he becomes injured which only fuels his rage. He makes meat pies of the remaining Khans with his trusting club. With the intensity flowing through his body he takes a bite out of the last remaining Khan. He likes it. After getting the information he needs he finishes the feast and continues of his journey.

As his mind settles, his hunger grows. He wants more meat...HE NEEDS MORE MEAT!...his new mission....eat the man in the suit!

So basically his stats will be high str and end. Low Perc and everything else pretty balanced. Majority of melee perks and figure finally get canabal around lvl 10 or 12.

I always hated playing straight evil character...so im excited about the crazy idea. He will also use the wild wasteland ability to add to it.

Other then this i usually make the generic silent sniper, smary lazer guy and a charming cowboy as my others.

I'm playing a silent, tech-adept style character. Initially, I upped my stealth and guns skills to better survive, now (level 10) I'm becoming a jack-of-all trades.

My character is kinda aloof but still quite naive: at my point in the story, I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the whole platinum chip thing: the tech aspect of it intrigues him, but all the political stuff tends to give him headaches :D

My guy is a scam artist and coward who never shuts up and leaves the killing to his companions. I've probably heard 75% of the recorded dialogue in this game already.

OH I like this thread. Well, I'll tell you about my current character, if you care to read it. Pardon me if this seems rushed, but I'm going to try to keep it short and simple.

I named her Carolina Red. Usually I make up my own names but I wanted to pay homage to Fallout3 and I always felt the name was good for a cowgirl varmint Outlaw.

Anyway in FO: NV she's a red headed ex-raider who once had some success in New Reno as a boxer before becoming a full time courier. If you're wondering she was a foxy boxer lol, but became so good at punching [censored]es that she took off her last opponent's head...which infuriated her boss. heh. She was basically a slave while working in New Reno, but her boss let her go free due to being at least a LITTLE intimidated by his craziest boxer's rapidly increasing martial skill. So she free, and became a courier...

Now, waking up in Goodsprings had jostled her thoughts, but her memories remained intact. She has an INT of 5, so she's not a genius. The good folk of Goodsprings treated her well, and she had made friends with Sunny Smiles. Good friends. Such good friends that Caroline was inspired to take the Charez la Femme perk. heh.

However, on one fateful Gecko hunt, Sunny was killed. By GECKOS. This filled Caroline with bitterness, but she did not grieve. There was no sadness. Just a cold feeling of something precious that had been lost(a "Good" morality playthrough, perhaps? Since her death disallows defending the Caravaner and Goodsprings from the Gangers ) ;p

Living out of Victor's unused shack, Caroline explored Goodsrings' surrounding landscape. She encountered Powder Gangers during these escursions, and they shared with her a few tricks about dynamite. Eventually she found work with them. She found them crude and crass, but admired their ability to use what little tools they where given to break the chains that held them captive. It seemed to her that this was not so different from her own experienced under forced employment in Reno.

So at this point I had an Unarmed character who is learning Explosives due to the close proximity of the Powder Gangers to her home. On a first playthrough especially I will let experiences influence my perks and skill choices, as well as who I allign with.

Now, over time the Gangers trusted Caroline more, and in the end she was present when the NCR came to impose their will upon their ex-captives, and she helped fight them off with the trademark dynamite'n'run tactics the Gangers where know known for.

Rangers tracked her down days later. Threatened her. She fled to spare Goodsprings any trouble, and trusted that the Powder Gang would survive future attacks after she shared with them her newfound studies on land mines.

The new goal was to learn more about explosive power, and to be ready when the Rangers came for her head in three days....

Her journy led her to Legion activities, and yes...they fascinated her. Speaking with elegant words she did not know yet understood regardless, commanding beasts which where rendered as loyal as any soldier, and with commanders dressed like what she would imagine Gods to dress like.

She acted as Legion Grenadier. Her uniform consisting of Blastermaster armor, Recruit helmet and her most favored weapon; a custom made grenade rifle. She was the Terror of Forelorn Hope, though those NCR victims had no idea she was among them, as Caroline has a gift for playing the role of the hard Ranger who's life she ended. Posing as "Caroline Delampa", a Tobacco chewing Ranger(currently have 26 coyote tobacco chews in my inventory!).

I really get a T-1000 vice when I'm in Ranger mode. I get little chills when I swagger into a new Ranger camp and they greet me with open arms. OOOH you poor fools. C4 is my weapon of choice for these encounters.

Sadly, Carolina Red is not very perceptive, and so it came as a surprise to her when she discovered slave trading at a Legion encampment. This has caused mixed feelings for her, and she has thought long on it during her trek to Freeside...

A trek which was interrupted at Boulder City. Assisting the Great Khans to escape yet more NCR oppression, Carolina felt a strong connection to this lot. Seh donned their gang clothing and walked with them...to the 188.

And there NCR opened fire upon her....and the Great Khans....they acted!! They slaughtered the NCR troops and also killed those who assisted them. During the chaos, Carolina was confronted by Veronica, the sole survivor of the 188 massacre. Veronica quickly joined her and the Khans, and the 6 companions continued on to Red Rock Vally....

I forgot to mention how I killed that Ranger and her companion. I saw them approach and ran into an old power station that had Golden Geckos infesting it. I jumped on a rock and used my only stealth boy JUST as the rangers can into the Gecko zone. Attacked by Geckos, the Ranger's deputy died, and she herself critically wounded. I finished her with a throwing spear to the head!

Well that's not so much role play but it was at the time. heh! The Rangers really scared the crap out of Carolina.

Anyway yes, I love to role play as I play this game. If I played to be the most effective charactr and to just beat the game I'd be so bored with this. There's just too much potential in the game to play that way, imo.

Ezio a young man, who as a child alongside with his parents, were slaves for a merciless gang called ' the un-touchables ' who were based north ( of the new vegas game world) . When Ezio was 10, both his parents were killed by the slavers. Four days after the murders, Ezio managed to escape and headed south where he could see bright lights radiating in the background. After days of travelling by foot, with no food or water, Ezio collapsed...........He Awoken days later, in a run down , handmade shack! In the shack lived an elderly old man by the name of Harrison! Harrison was a former gang member, in a gang called ' Plutos' after the Greek god of money & wealth! Ezio then spent the next 10years living with Harrison, learning everything he needed to know about the wasteland, Harrison was a master of Speech,Sneak and Barter and thought these skills to Ezio...He basicaly became a sweet talking, money hungry thief. But ultimatley ended up been brainwashed about stories of his old gang, and the God they worshipped! This brainwashing led Ezio in search of one thing, caps!! He would do anything for wealth...anything! Harrison died ... Ezio now had to go out on his own and try to survive the harsh wasteland. He planned to head North to an old cap counterfiting shack, Harrison had told him about, but on his journey he met a man, who had an overwhelming job offer, which paid ALOT of caps, Ezio could not turn down this offer , and so took up the job as the courier!
