The Best of Oblivion

Post » Wed Jul 28, 2010 6:31 am

I decided to share my thoughts with you kind forum users! I wanted to put together a list or portfolio. With all of our favorite things in TES4: Oblivion, or simply memorable moments, people, places, etc. I will start the list with a few of my moments, please continue in the forum below. I dont care if you think its to stupid, post it anyways I love to hear these stories and moments!

A few things I will miss is the good old Adoring Fan. I will be honest, I never even met the Adoring Fan or beat the Arena quest line. That is all I played before I got Xbox Live is Oblivion and still didnt beat Arena , not sure why but just didnt. But through the thousands of youtube videos I soon realized that there were millions of ways to kill the Adoring Fan, but I dont think anyone found a way to use him alive! Poor guy all he wanted was an autograph! Next up I believe M'aiq the Liar was a personal favorite. Some may not of even heard of M'aiq, if you are one of those people look him up on youtube, or on the Unofficial Elder Scroll Pages. Here is some background info on M'aiq the Liar , http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:M%27aiq_the_Liar . My final memorable moment would have to be, the whole beggining Intro and all the Cinematics inbetween. They were pure amazing and beautifal.

That was mine now it is time for you to share your stories!

For me, among the best of Oblivion was the artistry which you find everywhere within the game. Beautiful and unique statues are found in the cities and at shrines. There is An array of meticulously rendered forest creatures, with lifelike movement and matching sound effects. Monsters are often beautiful in their ugliness. With a high graphics setting, the view of a roadway in the afternoon with dappled sunlight filtering through the trees can take my breath away.

But the best of all was Angel.

I never really intended to play her. I read a forum post about there being no children in the game and at the time I was looking to roll a new character so, just for fun. I rolled a child mage and posted about her in that thread. The response was positive and so I decided to take her out briefly. After almost 300 hours, two forum RPGs and a fan fiction based on Angel I have to confess that my gaming life has nearly reached it's end. I may try V when it comes out but most likely not. That said, I still like to reminisce about the fun times on this forum.

A sample of the Angel fan fiction and my personal favourite episode can be found http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/862718-angel-the-fan-fiction/page__view__findpost__p__15508117

I really love the amount of freedom you have to make up different characters. It is awesome that you can ignore the MQ and still get hundreds of hours of enjoyment out of the game.
The two main DLC, KOTN and SI were epic, almost seeming like whole new games rather then expansions.

Also, I am still finding dungeons for the first time after playing the game for years. That is crazy. :ahhh:

The different NPC's are very cool. Argonians and Khajiit. Love em. :hugs:

Yeah, the landscape, the music(too limited tracks, though) and the sound matching in blocking, and of course, the personalization and cotex book in game.

Most of them, ---the spirit of survival. If one sets the difficulty to maximum from the beginning of the game.

The beautiful (and sometimes bland) graphics, the Dark Brotherhood questline, some incredibly fun combat using spell combos, the amazing view from the top of the mountains, some funny characters, some eerie moments like the Sancre Tor segment of the main quest... I could go on for quite a while. :)

I guess what I enjoyed most in O was Stealth tactics. This worked pretty well, although you actually need some mod like No Psychic Guards to enjoy it at its fullest.

My favourite character, Shadow Assassin, used a bow with that awesoem close-up aim together with poisons and sneak tactics. With low Stregnth and Endurance, it gave the feeling that you would be in real danger if you executed your plan without care.

Hmm, my personal favourite things in this game are simply walking around in the wilderness. Most game's try to be all up and in your face epic; however with Oblivion it's really subtle when your just out there on your own. I hope Skyrim can match OB in this department.

Well the best moments in oblivion....

Adoring Fan:
I remember when i leave the arena with the title of Grand Champion, then a Wood Elf came and say: "Wow! You're the Grand Champion! I saw your fight against the Gray Prince! You're the best! Can I... Can I follow you around? I won't get in the way!". After that I acepted and he say: "Golly, you're the best! I'm going to follow you and watch you and worship the ground you walk on! Let's go!"
He was a good guy after all... He can be annoying, but a TES IV Oblivion without Adoring Fan isn't Oblivion!

Lucien Lachance:
I was sleeping when a strange wearing black robe appears and invite me to the Dark Brotherhood, Lucien Lachance a great guy who practically is your Mentor in the dark brotherhood quest line, i completed Dead Drop Orders 8 Lucien appears from nowhere and he wants to kill me! I was afraid because i didn't want to fight my Mentor! so then he saw that I was innocent, and saying the Black hand wants to kill him! so i've donne everyting to save him, but I arrived late, and Lucien was dead... I Scream very Loud! (NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!)
I will miss my Mentor! My First Mentor! and the only one.

Thinking about how brutally he was tortured and killed was painful to think about.. His body hanging there as a zombie model was gross.

Yeah, I didn't like Lucien's death either. It did, however, make me feel right about being in the Dark Brotherhood.

The escape from the Imperial Palace at the end of the Thieves Guild questline was pretty memorable to me, although the best moments to me where when I was just running out in the wilderness to get somewhere, and I would stop for a moment and look in awe as the sun set in Niben Bay, or further North by the Nibenay Basin. Back then, when the game had just been released, that was a sight I'd never really seen in a video game before.

My favorite things are the little surprises here and there, stuff like unmarked quests.

Like others have said, the landscapes in Oblivion are wonder all on their own. I find it especially nice to play Oblivion in the winter, the green fields and pretty flowers are a reminder of spring time.

Nice thread. The first thing that came to mind is the Whodunit quest in the Dark Brotherhood questline. Being locked in a house with five people you know are never going to walk out and see daylight again, my assassin character will sign up for that any day! Just typing about it gives me the urge to load up a game and do the quest again. Trying out different kill orders, or making them do all the work for you by killing eachother, it's just great. Overall, the Dark Brotherhood questline is brilliant. It's so good I often wonder why the other guilds have such a lower quality of content.

Apart from that, I always enjoy doing a sneak kill with my enchanted bow. It's awesome to shoot people 10 feet back into a pile of stuff and seeing the physics engine do its work. The graphics and physics were so brilliant at the time, I can still enjoy it now.

The freedom of creating characters of custom class and such is still great. I tend to make new characters from time to time, playing most characters no further than level 10 or 15 before I want to start a new one. Where some may see this as a bad thing, I think it's great that I'm still so enthousiastic about the diversity in characters that I can create. Oblivion really taught me how to role play.

My favorite single memory has to be my first run-in with the unicorn. I wasn't on the quest, and I didn't even know it existed until I heard the combat music, turned around, and saw the minotaurs and a freakin unicorn chasing me. I just paused the game and texted everyone that I knew who played "OMFG THERE'S A UNICORN!!!!"

My first time seeing Kvatch and entering Oblivion was crazy, especially since I'm a LotR freak and oblivion gates look like the eye of sauron.
Unearthing Mehrunes Razor, hands down my favorite dungeon in the game, absolutely epic with a cool story and everything behind it.
And finally, playing through SI on a wood elf who was so acrobatic that I was able to travel most places by jumping between the giant trees and plants.

The best part of Oblivion is at Night in the Shivering Isles on the Mania side. Going up to the top of a mountain and seeing the night sky is just breath taking.

I forgot these. Very much agreed. Now that we're including the Shivering Isles here I'd also like to add the conversations with Sheogorath to my list, as well as when you first approach the Gatekeeper :D

1. Stepping out of the tutorial dungeon into the wonder of Cyrodiil! :twirl:

2. Meeting Savlian Matius as he stands bravely against that gate from Oblivion, defending his town with his very blood and honor for as long as it takes. Talk about a selfless, gritty hero with the heart of a lion - he's the real deal.

This topic seems like an epitaph. I don't intend to stop playing Oblivion, so I won't miss a thing. I haven't stopped playing Morrowind either.

I left the Adoring fan outside a shop once and forgot about him (good riddance HE'S SO ANNOYING.) Then after two month he comes back at midnight outside the Imperial City gate with a torch and an evil smile on he's face... 0_o.
Funniest and the most scary moment in this game.

Once I was playing and tried to kill the Annoying Fan. He ran away and I couldn't find him again, so I thought he was dead. Anyway, I was exploring a dungeon filled with undead and I had turned up the volume to hear the creatures moving around while I was sneaking. Suddenly I hear "By Azura, by Azura, by Azura!" very loudly out of nowhere. The Annoying Fan was right behind me and I almost pissed my pants.

Having a wolf chase me into water is always a great laugh. Standing on top of the water (with ring or amulet) and watching it dog paddle towards me while I taunt it.
Or standing on the bottom of the lake (again with ring or amulet) and staring up at it. Lol.

Poison is always a pleasure. Watching the creature collapse after several seconds is heaps of fun. The combat mechanics really make this a superb adventure..

I have by no means played extensively. That being said, the Oblivion gate at Kvatch was really one of my favorite moments. I was used to walking aound Cyrodill to a point where the landscape of Oblivion really gave me shivers. well done bethesda!
