Depends. I'm not terribly fond of Umbra as a main weapon simply because each strike casts a Soul Trap. It's useful, but only for one or two hits unless you're really into wasting item charges. But a 120-second Soul Trap is awesome when you're wanting to fill soul gems with powerful creatures and are long on combat skills, but short on Mysticism. Also, a zero-weight (you were planning on keeping it, yes?) Ebony longsword is way cool just on principle. Goldbrand is good on a damage-inflicted basis. I give Goldbrand the edge on utility as an enchanted weapon and Umbra the edge on utility as an item. I'd give it the overall edge if it weren't for the waste.

http://img844.imageshack.us/i/diakatana.jpg/ kills level 30+ goblin warlords, and other such leveled scaled enemies, faster than Umbra and Goldbrand. Just needs Azura's Star and there is a 1 second soul trap effect not listed in the pic. Can place the enchantment setup on any weapon you wish and have nearly the same results.

Takeing the crazy self enchanted weapons off the table and sticking with only the uniques. The higher levels of Shadowrend is the best you can get. High base damage and solid damage from the enchantment that even has some weakness stacking. The fight to aquire this weapon is going to be one of the hardest 1v1 fights you'll encounter in the game at high levels.

-goldbrand has a lower base damage, but deals more damage because of the fire enchantment (unless the target is fire resistant)
-umbra has the highest base damage, but no offensive enchantments

Thus it's better to keep both weapons. Strike with Umbra first to cast soultrap and then proceed with goldbrand. You can also let the Clavicus Vile quest unfinished to keep umbra weightless.
Add Azura's star to that and you have a great combo.

An weightless (quest-item) Umbra is also great for mages. It gives them the ability to soultrap, hides the shield slot (a shield does not affect the spell efficiency if a two-hand weapon is equipped) and allow them to carry a good back-up melee weapon with no encumbrance.

Of the two, I'd pick Goldbrand -- because of the fire damage. That more than makes up for the slightly lower base damage (except if the enemy is highly resistant to or immune to fire damage).

However, I prefer the Perfect Madness sword.

the 0 weight is less strain on your fatigue. umbra + azura's star can recharge all of your magical equipment infinitely. umbra prequest can't be disarmed. . . and then picked up by your enemy, in unfortunate circumstances.

if you use poisons, both weapons will 1 hit kill up to level 57 enemies while disabling their spell casting.

enemies resistant to magicka and poison will need to be bashed with a higher base damage, such as umbra.

Goldbrand if you finish the Clavicus Vile quest.

If unfinished, Umbra is the better sword.

It's not a bad idea to keep Umbra around, whether you choose to use it as your main sword, or Goldbrand, or a custom-enchanted sword. Umbra is useful for enemies that reflect spells, which will also reflect the enchant on a weapon. Since Soul Trap is a harmless effect, there's no drawback to having that spell reflected onto you.

If you're going for absolute power, Mace of Doom. But I like Umbra more, a perfect black blade. Just looks evil. Plus it doesn't matter what level you are, can get it anytime and does the same amount of damage.

Goldbrand, the fire damage makes up for the lower base damage but that's already been said before. A self-enchanted perfect-madness longsword beats both of them, especially if enchanted with absorb health. <3

For quickest whacking of foes, Goldbrand no doubt whatsoever. Especially with a weakness to fire/magic spell to complete it with ^_^

As a weapon, Goldbrand, simply because it deals more damage. Umbra isn't a great main weapon; it's usefulness lies in hitting an enemy with the Soul Trap enchantment, then finishing them off with other means and trapping the soul. The best strategy is to use Goldbrand as the primary weapon, switching to Umbra occasionally to trap a soul in Azura's Star for recharging.
