The Bethesda Podcast: Now Seeking Your Questions

Post » Tue Sep 21, 2010 8:28 pm

My favorite quest in Fallout 3 was The Power of the Atom. The reason that this was my favorite quest was that during the course of the quest you had to make a decision which would irreversibly change the game in a major way
Spoiler
Keep the entire city of Megaton or lose the entire city of Megaton
.

Will there be similar seemingly innocuous, but actually large scoped and highly differentiating decisions in FO:NV? What about in future TES games? I also enjoyed this on the smaller scale, where you had to choose to complete the good or bad karma objectives with differing rewards.

The absence of real factions/guilds in FO3 is understandable considering the environment, however, with the addition of them to FO:NV I feel this question is pertinant: Will you be bringing back inter-faction relationships? Will joining this guild make me hated by these folks? Will joining that one forever exclude me from joining this one?

Lots of great questions already. We may save a few of them for larger segments so that we can incorporate lots of responses. Keep 'em coming.

Here's a couple of questions:

What's Bethesdas take on the complexity and meaningfulness of RPG rulesets (SPECIAL in Fallout series for example) in their games? Is accessibility always worth the cost in complexity?

How much thought is given to the possibilities of some designpattern changes (other that aesthetical) between different franchises (Fallout and TES now sharing the same general gameplaystyle, for example)?

Cheers,

Undecaf

On fallout new vegas, the game has been moved away from the conventional fallout world. In that the main character will not be a vault inhabitant. In character creation do we get to choose our background? Will there still be vaults to explore? What will we use instead of our beloved Pip-boy's? I hear Michael Dorn is a voice actor in new vegas (awesome) are there any very subtle Klingon or Star trek references?

non fallout new vegas related, In videogames in general which do you think is more important story or gameplay?

Where IS the beef? Why is Nick Breckon eating all the copies of Brink, isn't that bad for business? Will you be able to find the jade monkey before the next full moon?

More seriously: How much pressure is there to meet a release date? People often see or hear about content that couldn't be completed because there "wasn't time", and I'm sure many gamers have at least once bought a game that they wish had been left in the oven a little longer, so to speak. On the other side, I'm sure most of us are familiar with companies like Blizzard, who sometimes delay games by months and even years but don't seem to suffer for it. How hard is it to struggle with the guy with a whip in one hand and a calendar in the other?

Okay I got a serious question: Do you guys ever feel under real pressure from fans who want you to make a particular game or to implement/remove features from games you're developing?

If you were driving down the highway on a one-wheeled canoe, and all your walls fell off, how many pancakes would it take to cover your doghouse?
In answering, please provide concrete examples from previous games.

You've used famous actors in your games before, such as Patrick Stewart, Sean Bean & Liam Neeson. Do you have these specific actors in mind for the roles from the beginning? Or is it more of a question of who's available?

You still get a pip-boy

Would you guys ever consider changing the art style of either TES or FO?
Would you go more realistic or more artistic?
Whats your favorite game out there in terms of art/graphics?

Do you think there might sometimes be a conflict of interest between modding and official extra content? For instance today it is very common with pre-order bonuses such as exclusive items, but similar content can easily be created and made available free by a modder.

Another question, might be treading on the "unnaounced projects" part a tiny bit, but here goes anyway. One of the defining things about the Elder Scrolls series is reinvention, with major overhauls in mechanics for each new installment. Will you take the same approach for future Fallout titles?

You still get a pip-boy

Well that kinda raises more questions!
Only members of a vault get a pip-boy unless this person was skilled enough to remove it from the corpse of a vault resident. Is this the case or is the courier originally a vault dweller?

I haven't been reading much info on New Vegas obviously :P Oh well.

Another question for you guys, what type of horror videogame do you prefer, Subtle and Psychological aka Silent Hill or blood and guts aka Doom?

Ok, so, Oblivion: The Movie.

Whats the probability that this rumor is true?
If it were to be made, on what scale would it be made?
Would you (the dev team) have any say in it?

have you ever considered removing the karma meter ? Do you think we may be better without it ? I mean some choices are amazing for there being no right/wrong but it was ruined when I saw I had lost/gained karma.
Also its about fallout 3 but why no love for the enclave fans in Broken steel ? I know they were the "bad guys" but it seemed it wanted me to hate them, and love the BoS, and just made choices irrelivant e.g use of FEV ?
Im just curious about why it was made the way it was.
