The biggest issue with ESO - difficulty

Post » Fri Mar 28, 2014 5:47 am

THE ISSUE
The leveling is too easy judging by the looks of videos and by most previews and youtubers. Have you seen the videos of dungeon bosses being killed in 2-5 blows? World bosses and 50+ bosses soloed with relative ease? At least it is for experienced MMO-players. I want a challenging leveling experience. What I enjoyed the most in past Elder Scrolls game was overcoming challenging enemies and being rewarded accordingly.

THE SOLUTION

Oblivion was too easy on normal and Skyrim was too easy on normal... but that's ok, because those games had mods and more importantly a DIFFICULTY SLIDER, so I just slid that up a notch or two and the problem was solved. As there is no difficulty slider in TESO, the leveling will by default be too easy to suit everyone.

I would have grown tired of Skyrim, Morrowind and Oblivion very quickly if it hadn't been for the option(s) to increase the difficulty, so why not find a way of making the leveling experience more challenging. I realize Diablo is a completely different game, but the multiple difficulties with moderately increased rewards might be one place to draw inspiration from.

IDEALLY
I want to level with 1-2 friends and feel rewarded for teamwork rather than be punished with boredom because the quests become twice as easy. I want to now and then have my ass kicked by mobs because I did something stupid. Heck, I want the option to be punished every time I do something stupid, to reasses, to narrowly escape, and to feel that my win is deserved. Without a challenge PvE is pointless to me.

The difficulty slider has been a central part of the Elder Scrolls series, but can and will it be implemented this time? How do you guys feel?

Sooo you haven't played the game. But you signed up to the forums to express your distaste for how easy the game is?

I wouldnt knock it till you tried it. Basing everything from a video or the likes is like saying i hate a certain type of food but ive never even tasted "said" food in the first place.

I approve this message.

Also the op is invalid as this is a MMO not a single player game with online support.

Ive been in a few beta, perhaps more then some, and I will 100% agree with this. My biggest fear is that end game grind will arrive in a few months. Hopefully adventure mode will take care of this.

I tried the beta a bit (tutorial areas) and I have watched around 15 hrs of streams. Read or watched 20-30 previews and looked for anything regarding difficulty. That said it's obvious that you cannot make a game with a difficulty to suit all. Neither a singleplayer gamer nor a multiplayer game. So of course it has to be accessible to people without a lot of experience. I have experienced the same thing in other MMOs, but I remain hopeful and have preordered. I just - maybe down the road - this is adressed, because it will be an issue to some players.

it would be impossible or prohibitively difficult to address.

I don't feel you can get a sense of it from watching video and playing the intentionally easy tutorial.

Like Reik said, it would be like having a favorite food you'd never eaten.

I like MMOs to be challenging throughout and not just when I reach endgame. They put an effort into grading the endgame difficulty - who says they cannot do the same to the first 50 levels?

Something (pick your topic here) in any game will always be an issue with "some" players. The comparison of an MMO to any single player game is irrelevant. End of argument.

Difficulty slider in an MMO . . .

In a MMO the leveling experience is fluff. The game doesn't start till max level.

Again MMOs =/= single player games.

It would be nice if the dungeons adjusted their difficulty based on group size and had options for the players to adjust difficulty as well.

For people saying MMOs don't do this I guess you never played City of Heroes then? RIP City of Heroes. One for muh homies.

Not when you're attacking mobs that have orange or red colored names, or whatever color the "this mob is hard at your level" is for that MMO.

If you want challenge in MMOs while leveling, it's easy to find. Just go to the places you're not supposed to be in yet. You can usually still pick up some or all of the quests there.

Personally I think the current system is fine. I like to get up to level 50 in a month or two and then gear up for PvP. During those time, I will still go through the player story as well as the other local quests. Spending way too long to get to higher level is going to be tedious and boring. I remember doing that in DAOC and wasn't fun at all.

I know. That has been the standard with MMOs for the last ten years. I'd still prefer a Skryim-coop mode over this, because I know what the MMO-genre means in terms of limitations and tradeoffs. I just kinda refuse to accept this standard for MMOs and especially considering the roots in the elderscrolls series where the leveling IS the experience.

You should take this to Zenimax. With your insight, they could surely redefine the game.

yeah I plan on switching the leveling up with the challenge of PvP. I just remember how WoW vanilla was an actual challenge and how I enjoyed the challenging dungeons. And that's not just nostalgia. I revisited WoW vanilla on a private server last year and got was I was looking for. Now I'd like to find a similar challenge here, but we'll see.

Some points:

1, The videos often show the game being played by a, say, level 42 player, killing level 35 mobs. Always check the level of player vs level of content before you judge.

2, While leveling, you can always make things harder simply by going to a higher level area. If killing level 8 mobs at level 8 makes you bored, go kill level 12 mobs.

3, There is a wide gap between the most skilled and the least skilled player playing this game. But the difficulty has to be tuned so that (with some effort) even the least skilled player can have fun and be able to progress.

So naturally, a very skilled player will find the game easy if he does not intentionally challenge himself(see point 2)

I've played quite a bit in all three of the alliance areas, and the PVE content is very flexible for you to find the level of challenge you personally enjoy.

Ignore the zone boundaries, ignore the levels of the enemies and just consider the entire alliance area as one large world to explore. If you find the combat is too easy, simply move on to a different area within the same zone, or even a new zone. If you find the enemies are too challenging, simply team up with a friend or two.

The most fun I've had in this game has been when playing co-op together with a friend, and we died dozens of times and then finally beat a particular enemy. I'm playing most of the time together with a friend, and we are often in areas where the enemies are significantly higher than our level.

Those youtube videos you saw where people were dominating enemies, they were playing in an area that was far too easy for them IMO. If I'm dominating everything I get bored, so I move on. There is always going to be an area you can find that is extremely challenging, but not impossible.

Therein lies your issue. ESO was never designed to be skyrim co-op. I do agree some of the early interviews are misleading but the game has been from concept to box a MMO.

To be honest ESO has "innovated" a lot from the run of the mill MMO. From the interface to group size to non instances pvp.

But to make the leveling portion any more than "story mode"? Pass.

Tbh if I could pvp at lvl 1 I'd never touch the rest of the game.
