The Birds and the Bees

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 5:10 pm

I want more 'ordinary' wildlife such as birds, bees, ants, mice, fish etc., to make the landscape seem more realistic.

Or will this be left up to the modders (Mr Siilka are you there?

This is from a post I made at Silgrad.com referring to both Morrowind and Oblivion but it's also the same thing I want for Skyrim.

Things that worry me when I play the game:

I don't like the strictness of the class(income) levels in the game, for instance in the game all poor people must live in hovels eating with wooden spoons. Why wouldn't some of them have secondhand/stolen silver forks or a fancy tapestry or two?
Hard wooden chairs for instance... poor people make cushions even if its only a sack half stuffed with straw or sheepskin covering the back of a hard chair.
So I would like see every hovel have it's 'relaxing zone' usually by a nice warm fireplace in a comfy chair. Where are the 'comforts' of a real home in these poor folks homes?
Where do they wash the dishes? What do they cook with? why are there no coats hanging on the back of the door or on hooks?
I would like to see just one unmade bed or crumpled pillow, not to mention a simple outhouse..

It's also why I took up modding so I could add these things but it would be nice if they were included.

I want a lot of passive "natural" wildlife. It includes a lot of birds (hawks, eagles, "singing-birds", flocks of birds, seagulls, and OWLS), lots of different fish. Some small, some a bit bigger.
Off topic, but I would also want to see some kind of deadly sea monsters in deep waters... but of course, very very rare.

Ants, haha would be cool. Would love that. It would also show us how good the engine really is. Can it handle hundreds of small creatures crawling around?
Mice though, I don't want them. Most likely because you never really see them. They're always hiding, being so small, or running away. They wouldn't add that much to the game I think.

Bees, maybe. Never seen bees in a game, so unsure if I would like them. I also think bees wouldn't really prefer Skyrim's climate. But perhaps... not sure. As with ants, it depends on how good the engine is as well.

I'm all in support of passive wildlife - it makes the world feel more alive, believable and beautiful :) The "me against the world, all world!" feeling that you get when everything that moves is an enemy is quite outdated approach.

I also had those idea, I would even go a step further: an ingame eco-system! It would really create immersion if mice ate bread that you left on the floor, cats look for mice, trolls eat your cat...

By then again, maybe this is something for the future. I first Bethesda to make a good radiant-AI system this time! Every NPC could have a budget, from which they could fullfil there basic needs. Every NPC could have different wishes, leading them to make different choices. Some would want steel spoons and forks, some don't mind eating with their hands but wish to have a good bed.

I'm looking forward to hear more about what Bethesda is planning for TES 3!

Well I'm all for birds and (a few) insects, but don't expect many because insects are small and there are a lot of them, with everything else not too big a deal. Regular animals however would be very nice.

Haha!
I've got to get used to typing "TES 5", it's weird to me, no #5 in the series already!

By the way, what do you mean by "wat'd"?

He means "WHAT!?"

Edit- yes I did mean to add that is what he did do meaning it was past tense. The above explains the "hard" way in which he wat'd.

I'm all for whatever ads to the immersion.

A troll ripping the legs of a deer like chicken drumsticks would be a cool thing to sneak past at random!

Red Dead Redemption did ambient creatures very well with eagles, rabbits, fox, ect.
It would be nice to have creatures have varying levels of aggression. Skittish would be rabbits and deer, who run away as soon as they see you. Passive creatures who mostly ignore you and only attack in defense like mud crabs or advlt Mammoths without young. Territorial would be passive animals that will only attack if you get to close like a Mammoth with young or a bear.
It would also be nice to see usually aggressive creatures with varying behaviors, like a hungry troll will actively attack you while a not hungry one will only attack if you get to close.

Maybe in cellars or something you can get a glimpse of one scurrying away, or see some mouse holes.

In my mod I made some crabs so tiny that you couldn't see them until you were right on them. I also made them very aggressive.
It's sidesplitting to see NPC's walk past and get attacked by them so they have go into combat slashing them with their swords. This in turns gets NPCs turning on each other it's really funny to watch.
I reduced the size of rats to both normal rat size and mouse size so you'll occasionally see them in homes, cellars and warehouses, but I made them timid and not aggressive at all.

Sounds terrific, I only just heard of Red Dead Redemption. Too bad it's only a console game as I don't have (nor intend to get) a console. The game has great reviews - maybe someone will figure how to port it a PC.

I'm all for more wildlife but make it unique by adding new creatures instead of a copypasta from real life like Oblivion did.

LOL... Ocasionally in Oblivion you can hear the majestic cry of a soaring eagle. I always look up... there's nothing there. :(

Ok thanks, I saw it before on the forums but I always wat'ed (:P) when I read it, I guessed it was "laughed". So, now my vocabulary went up by 1, thanks man! ;)

On-topic again: Good point Justicer to have different types of animals, with different types of aggressions. I would like to see an ecosystem like Red Dead Redemption in Skyrim, complete with the hunting features!
