The Blades OR How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Dr

Post » Sun Jun 20, 2010 5:43 am

This discussion may be slightly spoilerific, working on assumptions based on what Game Informer have taught us about The Dragonguard and their role in Skyrim.

So here goes.

Spoiler
In the Game Informer article we have the Blades described as those that help the Dragonborn keep the Dragons at bay, originally known as the Dragonguard. Previous Dragonborns, we know to be the last three lines of Emperors, ending with the Septim line. This, of course, runs in contrary to everything we've heard about Dragons and their role in the Empire up til now, right? I mean the dragons are meant to be friendly with the Cyrodiils, even fighting on their side? Isn't the whole Amulet of Kings thing a pact between the Dragon God and the Empire? The Blades are an elite force that guard against Dragons? Was anyone else thinking "Grey Warden" at this point? I know I was.

My guess is the wording is confusing us, perhaps the author of the article didn't understand what Dragonguard is meant to mean, or perhaps it wasn't throughougly explained to him. Looked at in the right way everything we've learnt from this article fits with existing lore.

The Dragonguard are not the people who guarded the empire from dragons..they are Dragonguards in the sense of Horseguards -ie they were the ones using Dragon mounts, its always been the Blades. The Blades and the dragon symbol were incoperated by the Akaviri, right? Nothing wrong here. The reason the Dragonguards might be a new Dragonborn's only help with defeating a full on invasion of Dragons might lie simply in the fact they had been tending to and using Dragons for hundreds of years before the Empire's collapse.

Much of this may be obvious to most, but it took me an hour or so of worrying over butchered lore before I realised I'd jumped all too quickly to cynical conclusions.

Thats all!

Also, any discussion of what you think the Dragonguard/the Dragonborn's relations with dragons will be like in Skyrim, and how all of this fits into existing lore.

The real question is: "Have they retconned the Tsaesci or is there a lot of new lore about them and Akavir in Skyrim?"

I'm pretty sure Akavir and its inhabitants have nothing to do with Skyrim other than whats already been laid down in lore, which to my knowledge is very little.

Aren't Akaviri dragons meant to be black, and Tamerielic ones traditionally red? The dragons do look rather western though, don't they?
